Wax for me. You don't have to use silca, but if you do the math, putting together your own DIY version isn't really worth the extra effort, but if you're a sperg, sure, knock yourself out.

"Wax" in a bottle isn't wax, it's just the same mess with a different label.

Like, yeah if you're making commercial quantities of this shit, then maybe it makes sense, but one bag of pre-mixed silca brand wax should be good for like 10+ years of waxing, so why bother buying $200 worth of bulk materials when you can just spend $40 once and by the time you need it again it's going to be the mad max universe anyway so you'll have bigger issues to worry about.

It's a much bigger pain to clean a drivetrain, that's why it's not really worth doing it unless you're replacing the chain and the cassette because getting it clean enough to start with wax takes hours.

I use wet oil instead of dry oil because i ride in the rain. Also, every 200-300 miles I wipe the chain with a rag then oil on top of oil because singlespeed, that's about one every week or two, then maybe like 2-3 times a year i deep clean the chain by popping the master link and throwing the chain in a Gatorade bottle and mineral spirits then oiling it with what wet lube was on sale, last time that was a big bottle of muc off all weather, it's kind of shit though, it feels fast on a fresh oiling but it gunks up real dirty. My favorite oil unironically has been 80w90 gear oil i had laying around

drip wax is literally less maintenance than oil based. The only hard part is stripping a fresh chain to bare metal for the initial application. And even that is as simple as leaving a chain in mineral spirits for a week then flushing it with degreaser and water. After that you just drip on the wax on every link like you would a oil lube. zero maintenance outside of that and your chain lasts forever.
I never wipe my chain, never dunk it on boiling water, nothing.

I wax my chains because I prefer not having grease smears loaded with forever chemicals all over my gears, my frame, my clothes, my skin, my walls, and my floor. I have never considered whether it's more or less friction compared to whatever else is out there. I bought the Silca kit and it's nice and works really well and all. It does probably save maintenance over time. But at the end of the day, you have to have a special little fucking crock pot for waxing your chain. I just wound up tossing it when I moved because I didn't have the space, or desire to pack up a oily/waxy crockpot, and moved back to the old way. I just don't think it's worth the investment unless you are able to use the thing in bulk. Like bare minimum, both you and your wife ride, and maybe you have some kids that you are grooming to ride as well. Or better yet, you are the guy in your friend group that has one, and you'll wax anybodies chain for like $5. Shit, I'd kill to have a riding group where I know a guy that I can pay $5 to wax my chain.

Ok, but then you still need to have a "pot" to keep the wax in. It doesn't matter if it's a saucepot or a crockpot. You have a messy waxy pot to store. And if you're cleaning the pot out every time, you're just eliminating most all the benefits of it. You're wasting wax, and you're spending more time setting up and cleaning out a pot than you would with the classic way for marginal durability gains at best.

I have an excessively redundant lubrication schedule with either type. I was using effeto mariposa drip wax for a couple years. Now I have immersed wax (Silca SS) chains but I top up more frequently with the drip product than do
a full rewax

obviously you need to use the heaviest nastiest blackest grease you can find, preferably one that already has sand in it. that's how i've found every bike i've ever bought or encountered

in reality i just use vaseline on the chain and wd-40 or a similar liquid penetrating oil on everything else, but every used bike i've ever bought and every bike any of my friends own are fucking covered in that black grease they dont even use on cars anymore

been working nicely for several years. plus, a $6 quart of oil and a $6 quart of spirits is like 2 lifetime supplies. I have allergies and put it in my empty nasal spray bottles (washed first) and give them away to my friends.

I got the silca secret drip wax thing on sale and it has been pretty good so far. It came in a combo pack with a chain stripper bottle.
I think the best part is that you can just spray some water over the drive train and wipe it dry. Reapply a little bit of wax. With oil that always got a bit messy.
