Last month, I had just picked a load in Suffolk, Virginia and had like 30 minutes remaining on my time, so I was desperately looking for a place to park.
It was just after sunset, so I knew my chances were slim in getting a proper parking spot, but I’ve checked the closest truck stops and had no luck finding any open spaces. With 5 minutes remaining on my clock, I was getting ready to leave this rinky dink truck stop with all 5 spaces occupied and already accepting my eventual DOT violation, I noticed a flatbed across the street parked on a dirt patch next to a Quality Inn. I booked it over there, got my truck positioned for backing, set my duty status to sleeper, and spent the next 15 minutes getting my tired ass in a good enough spot so that anyone else needing a place to park will have the space for it.

You're far more likely to have that happen at a secure receiver, like an armed forces facility, than out on the road and there they'd probably just make you secure it with them and have it returned it on departure.

Any opportunity you get to do it, and you have the time, work on that motherfucking maneuver and make sure you get trained to do it in tight motherfucking spaces because I swear to motherfucking god, you’re going to be out on the road late, one night, and you’re going to want to find a safe haven, but most truck stops and rest areas are overflowing with trucks, but there may be a TA or a Pilot Flying J with a large parking lot that may have a couple of spaces open, but of course people don’t give a shit how they park and will make backing into a space a FUCKING NIGHTMARE because you never had any training for doing your maneuvers in tight spaces.

Also, not every trainer is the same – mine happened to be alright, since he placed a lot of emphasis on safety and did well in instructing me on how to do 45s, but it was all at the DCs and Love’s that have a shit ton of room.
Some people had shitty trainers, from what I hear. Some trainers will either mumble or won’t do anything to prepare you for truck driving, so you’ll have to do things on your own. If you get those type of trainers, request a replacement.
Bring a week’s worth of clothes, shower shit, and bedding because there won’t be much you can do during training. Sleeping while the truck is moving is going to be rough but you will eventually get used to it… kind of. Sleeping in a parked truck with auto start will be interesting – focus on falling asleep soon whenever the truck starts itself, if your trainer’s truck is equipped with one. It’ll be easier to fall asleep if the truck is equipped with an APU.

Speaking of experience and fucking up your truck, it finally happened with me, last week, after 2 months on the road. Thought I had only rubbed against a utility pole while backing at a con’s lot, but it turned out the metal bumper cover caught the pole and pulled itself out. I was able to push the metal back in, but bumper is still broken and hanging. I used zip ties to keep it as secure as possible, but I’m going to need to have that bumper replaced.
Fleet body shop was closed for Memorial Day, during home break, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to have it fixed or have a new bumper ordered during my next break, in 3 weeks.

Well looking at the satellite I am immediately drawn to the rail network dividing me from where I need to go so I looked at street view for a little while to see where I'd be able to cross so I wouldn't have to back up in an intersection cause I'm too tough and cool to read signs.

I’ve been driving for 20,000 miles since I’ve completed training in April and doing certain maneuvers has gotten easier for me – what used to take me 10 minutes to perform a 45 with a couple or resets only takes me a couple minutes with a couple of pull-ups to make sure my space is nearly even on both sides of the truck. I think I should start working on my 90, since I haven’t done that since CDL school, in January.
My main problem now is figuring out dispatch to the point I’m able to get a load soon after my resets but at the same time finish the day before truck stops and rest areas fill up – 7am is the latest I’m willing to go on duty, but I would prefer to get started earlier than that. I’m also tired of cons and drop yards not having empty trailers available after dropping a load.

Welp, I was hoping things would be just fine and dandy dropping the trailer and picking up an empty, before my hours ran out in an hour, but the yard jockey told me I would have to wait for an empty become available. An hour passed and the yard jockey came over to where I parked my bobtail and told me the empty would be ready soon. It's not worth it to get off the Cross Bronx when there are hundreds if not thousands of border-hoppers ready to make stupider manuevers than possible at any second. I drove through there last Saturday and I just dealt with crawling at 5 MPH for half an hour instead of trying to take creative detours.

Ended up taking two pallets loads to one warehouse for that pop up, for a consignee, until it was time for me to start my 34. It gave me a little insight about dedicated routes, but I have no plans to take a dedicated account, until I’ve gained more OTR experience.

I’m being careful not to mention this one large parking lot in upstate New York to anyone because there’s always free truck parking available there. It doesn’t show up on the Garmin GPS, but it is displayed as available parking on Trucker Path. I discovered it when I was on my way to another safe haven and figured that would be a better option, due to my hours.
If I’m ever in the area and I’m running out of hours, I can always go there to take my reset.

It's somewhat less shit than wrenching on cars because the pay is higher and trucks almost always HAVE to be fixed asap so once you've looked at it you'll usually get the work too but it's still wrenching for a living which can never not suck. Even then you need to find a niche to specialize in and git gud which is how you'll make the best money possible in the trade.

Different company, still a mega. They had me take a greyhound out to my mentor because I didn't have my hard copy cdl yet. It showed up the day I was supposed to get on the bus and I didn't want to have them get me a plane ticket or a rental car instead because it would delay things. In hindsight I should have, although it would've meant missing the opportunity to watch a 'igger uppercut a schizo at the bus terminal and walk away scot free to get on his bus which was fucking hilarious.

Training is going well, I've got 3200 miles under my belt so far. Not working tomorrow because the truck is having technical issues. Digital dash went black and reset while I was driving which was really weird in and of itself but the last time it did that about a week after it happened my mentor ended up dropping a trailer so he's taking it to get serviced tomorrow. Before anyone asks it wasn't his fault at all, they had him on camera doing a tug test and checking the locking jaws to make sure they were secured before he left the yard and his dash cam recorded him doing a tug test at the love's like half an hour before it happened and if he made it that far he definitely wasn't high hooked. The truck is equipped with a fifth wheel release switch in the cab so the company figured it was some kind of computer glitch and didn't write him up for it or put a preventable on his record, but when the screen blanked out again today he told me he would drive the rest of the way just in case it happened again and is taking it to get serviced tomorrow because I definitely don't feel comfortable driving a truck that might drop a trailer let alone in my first couple weeks of trucking.

Honestly compared to some of the horror stories I've heard about other megas this carrier has been great thus far, as hard as I've been fucked over yet is almost getting kicked out of my hotel because the stay wasn't extended in time but I let it go because my recruiting coordinator had to take a few days off because their kid was sick and they made it right in time for me to not get kicked out. Really glad I didn't go with swift or werner instead like I almost did. They don't have driver facing cameras and they only piss test too. The pay is shit but it's shit everywhere your first year so fuck it.

I have a coworker who came from hauling cryogenics that says his position paid about 80k which is ok but it's still less than gasoline hauling.
Those tanks require special coatings and tests so unless you have a contract already it is unwise to start a business by purchasing a tanker and assuming youll be handed work. Not to mention the tank washes, MAN FUCK THOSE GUYS except the quala in coraopolis those guys are alright and their lot isn't dogshit, any and all activities you do with a ultra hazmat trailer are gonna need a wash out first and they're not cheap for the little guy.
Unfortunately unless you're in with someone who's got connections, all the megas snatch up the contracts because they're really the only ones who have the range of equipment to carry the loads, one day I ran engine oil the next I ran sulfuric acid they both paid the same (ass) and it was like nothing was wrong about that but I dont wanna be a downer but it really is an uphill battle even if you have connections
Dont know anything about class 1 drivers though I'd assume they make FAT stacks but I've only ever seen 1 on the road so maybe they're a dyin breed

I did that too. Didn't even notice the money taken out. However the company was reasonable and my dispatcher good so those things helped immensely.

For most OTR applications automatics are fine now. Best is the Volvo I-shift (too bad about the truck though) followed by the PACCAR/DAF 12 speed. Eatons just suck, though the ones after 2016 or so are better they're still not good. Also, how an automatic acts is to a certain extent configurable in the software and it seems every carrier has their own ideas about what drivers should be able to make the trans do. Some will let you run the thing around in manual mode all day everywhere, others lock that out completely, most are in between ime. What they've done in this regard has ramifications as to how you can run the truck down a mountain. That said it would be good to get that restriction removed as it opens up employment opportunities. For instance, not having an automatic restriction allowed me to take a local job where they were having trouble finding drivers who could drive manuals.

Unless you're running tanker, don't. HazMat box/reefer loads suck because of the paperwork and routing changes and don't pay that much to the driver but if you have that endorsement you can guess what you'll be saddled with all the time. Worst case, a mixed load that contains hazmat could have bills that run into the hundreds of pages and you have to look at every damn page to see what's there in both type and quantity and figure out what you have to display, if anything. Then there's the hassle at coops and ports of entry where they check that same paperwork but they don't care how long you sit there. All for a crummy penny/mile or some stupid shit like that.

That's something your carrier has configured then. A common one is where you can hold whatever gear you want but to up/down shift you have to take it off manual, let it make the shift, and then go back to manual. It's been my experience that automatics want to go down grades at least one gear too low, much like they do in parking lots, which is why I find this important but it seems a lot of drivers don't care.

More than 90% of semi's on the road are automatic and as of this model year you can't get a freightliner cascadia in manual anymore. Unless you're planning on working for a smaller company or getting into heavy hauling, you're fine.

Get a job with a company that doesn't have them. They do still exist. That said it's really not the end of the world if they do have them unless they're being super petty and busting your balls for having a drink of water or something. In which case you just put a post it note over it and if they call asking what happened you say you don't know and then when they route you to a terminal to get it fixed you take it off right before you get out of the truck at the terminal, they give you your shit back, then you put it right back on when you get back in.

Most of them won't even call you in to get shit fixed because they know everybody hates them.
