Need a little help getting spark on the bench. Don't have a starter, so I'm going to have to start it with a drill, but the way I've wired it up causes the dizzy to start smoking real bad,.and theres no spark from the spark plugs. I have a 12v backup battery directly feeding the coil, but is this even a good idea...? I was tempted to feed the coil off the alternator, but didn't have a spare wire long enough. I'm also wondering if I've fried the coil somehow while I was dicking around figuring out what polarity the condenser needed to be wired to, hence the lack of spark. I wish I wasn't so fucking dumb. The workshop manual is also useless.

Nothing short of total restoration. I fixed all the structural damage from the accident already. New firewall, floor pan, and inner rockers everything is lining up. The sub frame fit during the test fit so now it's all welded in. Now I have to replace the filler panel, rear valance, and fix the various rust holes

i painted all those 305 heads a long time ago, and decided i should just lap the valves and give a once over to that .030 over one im building for the ztard. holy fuck, they didnt even install 2 of the valve guides. i want to know who built this so i can go beat their inbred ass.

so, since the other two sets of heads are alpine green, i turned to the 083 heads that came with the fucked up 350. there were no shims under the springs and the valves were peened over where the keepers ride, i had to cut the top of the valvestems off to not mar the guides. i imagine without the shims the keepers bounced around and beat up the valvestem? I get to paint the center bolt valve covers that fit these. im out of cat yellow but it's became a meme now so im off to go get more cat yellow just to fuck with him

i realized the $20 mystery crank is a 350 crank and not a 305 crank, so i cant build any of the remaining engines. the 350 i have is a one piece and the adapter costs more than a scat replacement crank

The flange at the front, I did behind it, and just the bottom lip at the front.
The flange at the back I just covered right up to where the bumpers are on the sides.
Can't fucking see it, and the car is dark green anyways so it blends in.
Found bits of the rebuild as I was cleaning out the crevices. Seems like the original owner who rebuilt the car covered the zinc oxide with something like silicone around the edges to keep the moisture out. This is some turbo anti rust autism.

Still need a new clutch. Kit post to the door is 190 quid. Have to find someone to do it. If I had a few days off, a joist, and a big bag of cans I'd try it myself, but I don't have one

Been working on a lot of Chevy small blocks lately. Chris Craft began converting sbc's for marine use at the tail end of the '50s, and did a lot of interesting things with them. Depending on the needs of the hull, they were mounted both backwards and forwards, and were built in both regular and reverse rotation configurations.
A 327 in an 18ft runabout has some serious ass, especially in a 70 year old wood boat. It's impressive how quick these are.
For the traditional F motors (like the one in pic related), the major marinization changes generally consist of:
>new oil pan and sump (because of the mounting angle)
>marine exhaust manifolds
>raw water pump driven off a gearset at the back of the motor by the transmission >new crank so the flywheel can mounted on the front
>additional oiling passages for the trans since it shares engine oil
>marine carbs that lightly spring pre-load the float to keep them from bouncing in the bowl through wake
And a bunch of other smaller things. It's been very interesting learning about these old car-turned-boat motors.

Haven't swapped any steering wheels yet, so not sure how this place does it. Most of the work I'm doing now is soaking the hulls up and getting them back on the water after sitting for the winter. I personally have a steering wheel guy that I've used for various projects that could cast those, but I'm sure this marina already has a hookup. Most owners dgaf about a cracked wheel as long as the boat runs solid and doesn't take on too much water.

No, unfortunately he just does straight vulcanized rubber castings and mostly just does old restoration work as a hobby. I don't know anyone who does epoxy wheels regularly.
Do you have pics of the wheel? I've personally cast a wheel in epoxy, but it was a featureless round grip which was easier to make a mold for. Contoured shapes and finger grips might be harder. Are you stripping it down to the bare wheel frame or just trying to fill in some cracks and chunks?

I can't stomach $1200 for the minty one on ebay, so a $500ish resto and $50-100 for a wheel is more palatable.

Dad bought it many moons ago (read: pre-2000) for $10k. It's recently come back home after being at a good mechanic family contact, who also unfortunately passed away while it was with him. The car has a supposed backstory of being a factory-built/ordered drag platform. Kinda explains the rear wheel cutouts, but I'll be damned if that chrome trim isn't a perfect fit all the way around.

Anyone here ever used POR-15? They instruct to use their ยจMetal prepยจ product first to etch the metal surfaces, but I can't help but think that it would be totally unnecessary when used on an old rough/seasoned metal surface? One would think that it'd be enough if I just clean off any grease, dirt and loose rust first on the surface and then just paint it with POR-15.

Y'all are gonna love this.

Last Saturday I drove up to DFW area and bought that G wagon from a Ford dealership, knowing that it was still going to be a the Mercedes dealership getting serviced. Fast forward to Saturday I got a call from Ford saying it's ready to be picked up Monday morning.

>Father in law and I set off at 5am
>Arrive at 10am, an hour after they opened
>Don't see G wagon
>Go in and manager apologizes, says it's still at Mercedes 20 miles away, come back in 1.5 hours
>NBD, go grab coffee and eggs with FiL
>Come back 1.5 hours later
>Still don't see it.
>Wait 45 mins
>Go in and ask where the fuck is it?
>They haven't heard from salesmen group who went and got it
>20 more mins of waiting as they call around
>Turns out that it threw the belt
>They decided to drive it back anyways, 20 miles on the interstate... It's 95ยฐ
>Oh it's overheating
>Drive faster = air will cool it
>Suddenly engine stop while they're going 80+ on highway
>Spend the next hour trying to restart it and do not call boss
>Dealer begs me not to cancel deal and that they'll fix it free of charge
>Mfw
Cancelled deal and I'll get my check back. Totally wasted day and trip.

i'm more worried about the cable directly touching the chrome trim as it's gonna be sitting on it, in direct contact, and it's solid steel, no plastic. dunno what year challenger you've got, but if a newer one, that and the ls400 would both have plastic trim which kind of insulates against heat, or at least doesn't get as hot as steel.

i did consider that, but it's actually insanely tight/snug that the conductor inside would definitely get crushed, even against the rubber. i just want to cut out a notch that juust allows the wire to get through. but i'll take another look to see if i can avoid having to modify the trim.

Id be hesitant on modifying anything permanently for something that will be obsolete in 5 years. I'd rather use rubber cement and run the wire on the edge of the chrome. You also run the risk of developing a water leak.

i'd say it's a 3-5mm notch only for the cable - the dashcam itself is going to be VHB taped to the windscreen, the end of the cable that'll be poking out is a mini usb type.
i do get what you mean though since permanently modifying an unobtainium part would be an absolute last resort.

Its like the craze to wire houses with cat5 cable for high speed internet.
I just replaced a windshield on a '68 and reused the original chrome (stainless) trim. It will still look the same in 50 years.
You wont be using the same dashcam in 5 years.

ehh not really. if you have desktops in rooms that's pretty useful. wired is also more reliable than wireless.

Its ancient tech thats unlike modern vehicles. From rope seals on the water pump you have to adjust constantly as it wears to solid linkage for the brake system that will fail if you skip maintenance.

The other option is the tremec tkx, and since you've got an E body, there are kits available to manual swap that, bell housing, pedals, crossmember and all. whole shebang from american powertrain is about 6200 bucks.

It wasn't just Ford that lied.
They all did.
There was even weird crazy shit like if you ordered a 429 with the dragpak you got solid lifters (the salesman and brochure never mentioned that).
That was how they squeezed the "oh ya, we sold 500+ of these to the general public so now its legal in NASCAR" out of their production numbers.
Im not even kidding.
That happened.
And these monsters are still out there.
In a barn.

Thanks! Needless to say mine was a tick over 15 years old in the mid-80's and nowhere near that smooth. Mine would really let you know on the 2-3 gate change where this worked-over unit was almost silent. Mine would also hang up on a 4-2 downshift so I'd have to stop and reach under the hot car and feel for the linkage and pull the linkage arm back until it lined up with the others. Never failed on an upshift, though that was no doubt coming due to time and mileage wear. Now I want one with one of these massaged shifters.

My coworker was saying that when I replace the bearing and do up the castle nut afterwards I should back it off slightly to give the rotor a tiny amount of play so the bearing doesn't destroy itself.
Is this true?

You want an 80-96 Bronco
I have older and newer Ford trucks, and the aforementioned.
All are custom in one way or another.
All Bronco are 4wd so that makes shopping easy.
Has a tighter turning radius than all Toyota pickups of that time except the standard cab shortbed- the Bronco is actually half an inch shorter than a fox body mustang (look it up).

Oil, filter, and gasket change.
I did the grease nipples last week and almost pumped grease into the clutch slave cylinder. That was fun.
What was more fun was the sight of the rubber gerter/shoe(?) Behind the slave hanging off. I'm now 50/50 on the clutch issue actually being my synchromesh

A lot of those cork gaskets are glued together from several pieces. You could cut it and section it back together. Iโ€™d cut it on a bias for more glue area and use contact cement or CA glue on the joints. I also contact cement them to the rocker cover on my BBC stuff and use nothing on the head side. This will hold the glue joints and also let you remove the cover and use the gaskets multiple times. Iโ€™m still using a set of metal core cork gaskets that are 23 years old now and theyโ€™re off several times a year for maintenance with no leaks.

This only seems common if you scour forums. Ive had multiple Broncos and have been around many more with friends and never seen one with cracks.
And 99% of Broncos with cracks are rust belt pieces of shit with rotted body mounts.
Its a non-issue.

No. Especially donโ€™t use silicone or they slide out. Glue one side, dry the other. Dont over tighten either, just till the cork bulges near the bolt. Hammer those tin covers flat around the bolt holes if theyโ€™re pulled and use load spreaders on the bolts. Cork doesnโ€™t leak if done right.

Gonna be doing my first big kid drive in my car soon, Vancouver to kelowna for a wedding, 76 monarch

This drive I'm doing is going through the rockies, wish me luck

Within the last 8 months she's got new
Brakes and lines
Carb
Thermostat though i forgot to fucking drill the hole
Alternator
Plugs and wires
Muffler some exhaust pipe
Fresh coolant and oil all within 4 months
Dif fluid change, fresh change from the FACTORY administered fluid
Had a shop look at the transmission, beyond my pay grade to bother with transmission stuff, shop said it's "fine"

My next step, as a better safe tha sorry measure is a transmission cooler, I've driven this route before and theres been "modern" cars on the side of the road from overheating

I know it might be "overkill" but I'd rather not lose this old hag, going to donthe transmission one first

Anything else you guys think i should give a look? I'll post pics later

AC system is holding vacuum. Just now getting back around to charging it. I'm going to charge it with propane and see if it holds. After the test, I have a whole case of R12. I'm debating if I should try to sell that to some boomer and buy the Frosty Cool 12a replacement refrigerant.
All my hoses are original and in good shape, except I'm suspect of the crimp on one hose. So I don't want to waste that precious boomer gas in case it goes.
Thoughts?

That's to ease purging air from the system after a refill. Once that's done the hole is irrelephant.

Personally, since you mention some pretty good grades overheating newer cars I'd put a radiator in.

I'd also carry an upper radiator hose, couple feet of heater hose and clamps, enough coolant to fill at least once, at least one quart of atf and engine oil, bottle of brake fluid, at least one ignition module, one ignition pickup, one plug wire long enough to fit any cylinder, and one ignition rotor. Oh, and at least one battery terminal repair end. Plus enough tools to install any of that. If it needs more than that you're not getting it done roadside/parking lot anyway.

There was a time I defended you but after awhile I just couldn't do it anymore under good conscience.
Your 4 pages of rant are excuse after excuse. You blame others for every failure.

Meanwhile myself and others have brought actual field finds back from the dead and restored them to functioning vehicle levels and increased the number of classics on the market. As opposed to your favorite hobby seems to be taking your fuckups to the scrapyard for beer money.
I dont even understand why you're here. You dont care about classics and you've never restored or owned one.

i reckon sell the r12 because it's worth a pretty penny now. maybe even hold on to it and sell it later to a boomer that'll pay an eye watering amount for a refrigerant...the propane is cheap, and just as good as r12 from my experience.

Over what? You being a retard?
Because we already established that as a fact like a decade ago.
Go ahead.
Let's talk specifics
Feel free to say "Ford efi sucks. I bought a piece of shit car for 200 bucks and it didn't run and after I bought a 20 dollar ecu off ebay it still didn't run"...

the rad was "recored?" less than 20,000 miles ago, no rust and the fluids flows green

all the coolant/heater hoses and such are fresh

will get the fluids you described in the trunk

the ignition stuff might need to wait, money is tight

fresh terminals, and a smattering of the wrong tools for the job is always under the seat

thanks for the advice

might dip into an extra fan on the rad if money permits

gas is gonna be fuckin ROUGH it's 1.70 a liter here? that's what 6 a gallon in burgers?

if i am lucky it is one tank one way, this square is 20mpg on a level surface with the wind behind me

when i go i'll take pics during piss stops but it probably wont be for another month or so

when i was looking for pics on google, not only did i get slapped by how rough mine is, but i found out the last year of it added those faggy square lights, instead of the simple rounds, don't get me wrong, i do like the squares, but the car was meant for rounds

Hey, if I were equipping MY ancient (49yo) car for a challenging road trip over mountains I'd have all belts, an alternator, a regulator, a water pump and a fuel pump also in there. I wouldn't feel bad about having a carb kit and a wheel cylinder kit along for the ride too.

All of the parts I've mentioned were always absolute crap and Chinese production just made them worse. It's one thing to knock around town without a backup but sitting on the side of the road for hours, if not over a day, is quite another.

Because your "ability" to diagnose sucks monkey balls.
If you pull a P0420 code you just ask Google what's wrong. AI says "bad catalytic converter" so you assume its clogged because thats what retards always think so you gut it and then it still runs like shit and is throwing P0420 but you just say "oh, thats because I gutted the cat".
Meanwhile the original issue was actually a bad O2 sensor because P0420 isnt "bad catalytic", its actually "o2 voltage signal below threshold" which CAN be caused by a bad cat but also multiple other failures. But once again youre too fucking stupid to actually TEST anything so you just throw random parts at it, regardless of issue or manufacturer.

Go back and look at your own list you blogged. How can you fail that hard over and over again?
Cubans keep cars from the 50s running with carburetor parts they made in a parking lot.
But even with unlimited access to information and every part available you cant repair the most basic vehicles that third worlders drive through jungles and deserts.
