I usually don't speed (much) on the arterials and regular streets around here, and once in awhile I'll get someone who follows close on a curvy lakeside road. I just don't slow down and watch them get smoller and smoller and then speed up to catch up. On interstates I just always sit on right or center and pass at speed so I don't end up with people tailgating often.

I drive to put another car in between the tailgater and my car. So now that tailgater tails a different car. If that tailgater keeps trying to follow me, that is a red flag. That means a completely different high-caution response is needed. That means driving by a police substation, city hall, or to my corporate workplace which has armed guards and an entry check. There is no way that tailgater will try something because the long drive in to get to the guard gate is made with curves and blocking poles to semi-trap invaders trying to panic reverse after attempting trickery.
