I'll be honest I was cucked my whole childhood into believing that being nice and polite and not upsetting the status quo is what you should always do. As a result I almost never honk the horn even in situations where I 100% have the right and in fact it would be dangerous not to, such as if someone tries to merge into my lane unexpectedly, I'll just try to slow down or dodge them. I've been trying to fix my mentality for years but oftentimes on the road you only have so much time to react so I end up defaulting to my earlier behavior...don't know if anyone has tips or anything to overcome this other than practicing honking in less critical situations.

If you get in my lane in front of me without signaling, even if I saw you coming 1.5 miles away, I'm laying on the horn and going to pretend I didn't see you. Use your signals.
I don't really use it any other time at all, except for the rare case where the car directly in front of me doesn't move after a few seconds of a green light, in which case I try to politely tap the horn incredibly shortly to not look like the dickheads that stupidly lay on the horn at intersections.

I don't think I've ever used a horn in 20 years of driving. I'll occasionally hit the clutch and rev at people but I'm generally forgiving and assume people make honest mistakes.

I only ever honk to say hi to people I recognize on the street. I drive a sports car so revving and/or getting out of the way is more effective than honking in dangerous situations. Honking out of frustration is valid in two scenarios:

Even then, any honking should be relegated to a quick tap on the horn. Anything else is antisocial subhuman behavior

Personally I find really short honks cute (for example for greetings). Basically super short blips that if done right aren't even loud because it's too short for the horn to fully spool up. Anyone who has mastered these has my respect.

I do this too, but not of pure social niceties but for my own sanity/avoiding legal hassle. I've seen plenty of dashcam footage where someone had the right of way and someone cuts them off or something and instead of avoiding the problem altogether they lay on the horn instead of preventing an otherwise preventable accident.

I split lanes in Los Angeles. Cars usually give you space since it's legal here. If cars are close to the line, they are either clueless, on their phone, or about to jump lanes. I started preemptively honking and have reduced my close calls from daily to maybe once a week/month.

I can also tell when traffic is not normal and cars aren't being patient/crossing double yellows. I'll start honking incessantly to alert drivers of my upcoming presence. I also ride slower now that I'm older and realize the 60 seconds I saved are probably not worth getting hit at 50 mph, so I'll just merge back in if traffic is flowing.

Honking on a motorcycle definitely helps when cagers are brainless people in huge cars covered in blindspots.

In 43 years of driving, I've deliberately hit the horn maybe about 3 times, to wake drivers who evidently fell asleep behind the wheel while stopped at intersections with long intervals. I imagine it would be fun to mount a couple hundred watts of loudspeakers discreetly behind the grille, but that's way too much work for the possible occasions.

If you get into an accident, the horn doesn't change the fact that your car is damaged. If you avoid an accident, no harm was done so there's no point. If an accident is imminent, it is too late to honk, the other guy will hit you anyway. If an accident is not immediately imminent, the other person will have time to correct whatever mistake they made that made you consider using the horn, so it's not needed.

I'm assuming you live in a 1st world country though, these facts only apply if you and the people around you are white and have an IQ above 80.
