It's big, but politicians started treating car culture as their "tough on crime" boogeyman 20 years ago so from what I hear it's cucked as shit. Average speed cameras, basically any mod is illegal and cops actually pull you over for it, you technically need a certified engineer's review to legally change wheels or your exhaust. This is all from word of mouth on here, not a 'strayan.

It mirrors american car culture in a lot of ways. wide open space means drag racing is a lot more popular there than in europe or anywhere in asia. with drag racing comes burnouts and people making loud noises for the sake of making loud noises.

Australian car culture is loud, proud, and very audacious. they worship muh V8s, though, probably not to the same extent as americans, because they also got exposed to lots of cheap performance straight sixes.

best of all, no displacement tax. so you get european style cars, without any of the european fuckery that makes them painful to live with outside of warranty. imagine if every german sports sedan could be optioned with a pushrod V8 instead of a Borg Cube engine that they typically have. aussies took european platforms and made them better. gave them proper engines. made them "just werk".

Depends and who and where. Offroad, pavement princesses, classic muscle, classic cruisers, euro, broccoliheads in crackle tune golfs, bogans in 2000s models holdens/fords, burnout, fwd jap, rwd jap.

Like other anon says it mirrors America in a lot of ways plus close Japanese influence and all the uniquely local culture.

its completely cucked, low speed limits and you get fined for going even 6km over the speed limit, Anti hoon laws in every state with NSW and VIC being the worst. If a cop thinks your car LOOKS modified you need to spend 100s of dolars getting and engineer to sayu its not, every tiem

Vast majority of society is trundling around in an SUV, twin cab ute or cheap hatchback like everyone else

Rally, amateur racing, drift and drags are still a thing and doing their stuff. Custom and show cars not so much anymore and sort of moved more into the hp-dyno queen, resto-mod route instead. Every man sports coupe and sedans are still out there but have been dwindling in numbers over the last 20 years or so since Ford-GM fucked off, Jap imports sort of filled a niche there as well for many years until they got very expensive, european sedans, hatches are sort of bodged into it by default of being available.
Classic cars, exotics and higher end sports cars, grand touring cars are still out there, bring a lawn chair and sun hat
4WD community is kind of huge, touring, cross country, rock climbing and getting bogged on the beach until you overheat your transmission crowd are bigger than they've ever been. Vast amounts of bolt-up stuff is everywhere for anything you could ever want to make them heavier and slower while getting bogged, breaking uni or CV joints, drowning it in a river crossing and going home on a tow truck.

There's still a significant portion of the scene that is all about commodores and falcons. It really depends on what you're doing, if you go to a drag meet or burnout competition at the nats or whatever you'll see some jap stuff (especially old mazda rotaries or old dattos or corollas with v8 swaps) but it is overwhelmingly V8 commodores and falcons with an increasing contingent of turbo nissan commodores and barra falcons. On the other hand if you go to a weekend track day or drift event you're going to see a lot more jdm stuff (and au falcons).

not if you're in NT. they're the only state that taxes by displacement AND cylinder count. it's strange as fuck because for a long time they were formerly home to a stretch of highway with no speed limits for a while. And their highways are 130 limits while everywhere else is 110.

I thought QLD was the worst. Other places like France can be bad too, on google maps I've seen speed cameras on little country roads over there but their highways are around 120 or 130 km/h.

>>28448893
Basically in the 70's we had this larrikan culture, just males sort of partying hard and making a lot of noise on the weekend.
This offended a certain type of people called wowsers, I don't know if you have this in America but having a v8 starting getting associated with being a bogan.
I'd say leading up to 2010 something like the "won't you think on the children hysteria" became common in the media so to buy votes politicians introduced tough of crime legislation and "more police". Boomers especially women absolutely ate that shit up, yet its those normies that are harassed the most for going 5km over the limit now.

Look up elections in 2010 and you see their main policies, also this exact time a lot of roads had their speed limit reduced by a lot.

Another weird thing is the tall poppy culture which the UK has as well.

>>28449044
I was looking to live up there, real funny how a place with of the most excess land in their world can have properties still in the hundreds on thousands of $. Don't worry though, theres no corruption in Australia.

Most people didn't want to remove the unrestricted limits. I happen to know a freeway in Australia that despite having some of the most speed camreas on a road still regularly has fatal accidents on it.

>>28448649
A lot of car clubs with 60's and 70's cars but the old days of getting a $1000 car from the 70's back on the road easily are gone. Funny thing is Australia imported a heap of Skylines before America could and we had limited drifting here but now America has overtaken us greatly.

Car meetups are different now, people know if the do a big rev someone will record them and the police will eventually see it.

Take this as a warning Americans, I've seen news of an awful lot of speed cameras going to you.

do the average speed cameras apply to passenger cars now? when they were initially installed they were only for trucks. recently they started talking about making them apply to private cars but not sure if they've actually done that yet or not.
it was funny flying past everyone between wollongong and sydney - not many people knew that the average cameras there were just fixed speed cameras for non-truck traffic. once past the gantries you could let loose.

Its an incredibly mixed bag.

Basing off my personal experiences

>Sandniggers in BMWs
Do not let these "people" near you. Arabs are to Australia what blacks are to America.
>inbred bogans with commodores
Usually dumb as dogshit and can't appreciate anything other than "FARKIN 400 HORSEPOWER DRAGS AT RED LIGHTS MAYTE" and smoking crystal meth.
>fags who put $15,000 of mods into their Japanese car just to stand next to it at the meet and never drive the thing when you invite them to.
Why do these people exist? Can't understand the purpose of sinking so much money into genuine performance parts just to SAY you own them and never use them.
>unashamed initial D weebs who listen to eurobeat while racing on mountain passes at 2am.
Ironically these are probably the best enthusiasts since they genuinely care about performance and will actually hoon their 20k+ cars
>turbofags in TUFF 4X4 FOR REAL MEN (most offroad they have done is a gravel path)
No hate on offroad enthusiasts but majority of them are posturing masculinity without doing anything thats actually masculine like hitting the gym, hunting, camping, etc. They just buy maxtrax to bolt on the side of the car and stand around in the maccas carpark and mutually masturbate.

All in all its a very diverse mix, but overwhelmingly gay. The good circles are an absolute treasure to find but fuck me its difficult trying to find people who actually appreciate automotive enthusiasm as a whole and actually want to drive their car and not just upload pics to instagram.

maybe im just lucky but i think altough those laws are technically in place, most cops wont do anything about it unless you are driving like a dickhead in the first place

A lot of the reasons people get pulled over is that they've done enough dumb shit that they have some kind of profile built up over time for prior shenanigans. Its not actually your car!
So the automatic system in every patrol car sees your number plate, cop wants to know what you are and it'll tell them if you've got a history and current parole, arrest records, defects, DUI, speeding and so on. They'll pull you over all the time and its really not something you can ever shake, or worse yet if you've bought a car from someone with that record, best to get a new set of plates or you'll inherit some of their bullshit for a time until the system figures out you're nobody in particular.
I've driven modified cars since about 2000, mostly northern Sydney for about 15 years which is pretty heavily policed, but never got pinged for anything as I don't have a record for nothing
Closest I got was a mistaken identity one night, but that got cleared quickly as they looked at the car and figured out the S13 wasn't the Commo they were looking for and on my way, packing shit because I'd bodged a direct air vent bov as a temp fix, the car was practically straight through exhaust, massive IC up front, big tubbo, induction roar, too dark tint, probably too low and it was prone to shooting flames out during gear shifts.
Only other times I've been pulled over was cops going 'oh, thats an extremely rare JDM car' and we end up talking cars for about half an hour

Out here in the country, no one gives a fuck what you're driving around really, as long as its not going sideways or doing 200km/h

Depends on what club you belong to. There are some really great, genuine blokes who will go out of their way to help you with repairs and mods. My local Alfa club are fantastic. A weekend cruise every so often, good food and coffee and everyone having a laugh. It's great for the mental health.

So then when they drop the limit by another 20km/h while the road is exactly the same as it was before, what's that about? You just going to keep slowing down until you might as well walk there just because some fuckwit said you have to? For what? The law being the law doesn't make it not bullshit mate. Don't be so surprised when people are mad about it.

So many fuckwits on the road don't know how to drive, 80km/h on roads is outright dangerous these days.
Those same roads in the US are 57km/h (35mph)

Freeways on the other hand should be 130km/h or faster off-peak hours and 80km/h at peak times, they already have the overhead digital signage ready to do this.

I'd say compared to America that Australia has higher limits on twisty country roads which can often be 62 mph or 100 km/h but that guy is talking about literal freeways with sections that used to be 110 km/h or 70 mph that have been reduced to 80 km/h or 50 mph, these places are literally revenue raisers as I see police on waze in these areas all the time. I know a freeway that had a 10 km section reduced to 80. You can follow the rules all you want but they still find a way to fuck with you.

Compared to other countries I did notice Germany has a fair few roads that go between 100 to 120 km/h on fairly straight roads. In Texas and other states its fairly common to see freeways with 55 mph limits but also about as common to see 75 mph too.

My hunch is that speedlimits are not really scientifically implemented and were more of a general guideline in the early days but now we are stuck with limits implemented from around the 60's and 70's because basically old people will be offended because we've have those limits for so long.

bells line of rd used to be 100, it got dropped to 80 but that pissed locals off so they brought it back up to 100. then after some "consultation" whatever that involved, it was brought back down to 80, with some 60 zones for some of the more crowded/trafficked areas. driving it at 100 feels a lot better

There are three countries in the world that have what can be considered an actual car culture. The US, Australia and Japan.
Lots of Australians will cry about whatever law or regulation they want to cry about but that doesn't change anything, the country is still full of enthusiasts who do what they want and view those laws and regulations as a minor headache to just ignore or work around.

Defect? Throw your stock parts back on in an afternoon, get it cleared, then put good parts back on. Or know a good mechanic who you can just send photos of the 'legal setup' to and they'll clear it. Or just get an engineers cert.
Yearly inspections? 80% of mechanics will just check your tire condition and whether head/tails/indicators work, costs $50 and takes 10 minutes.
Police targeting enthusiasts? Most guys in modded cars have never been hassled by police or received a defect. People will not get targeted by police if they are driving like an idiot (every lifted 4wd nigger who weaves through traffic).

You must be joking, UK ones are incredibly tame compared to Australia.
Recent weekly UK upload - 10 minutes of nothingburgers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzpNPCR4xtI
Recent weekly Aus upload - ~30 minutes, many more collisions, people spinning out, or crackhead behaviour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEuug5PDt3A
In the UK link (after the opening advert which is from the US), there's a minor bump with no damage shown at the start and that's all there is. The rest are just near misses at best. In fact, watching UK compilations has long become boring due to how many clips are just the cammer overreacting, and the uploader just wants any content to maintain his sub count.

https://datahub.roadsafety.gov.au/progress-reporting/international-comparisons
UK deaths per 100k is 2.6 and Australia is 4.5 but if you remove the abos in NT it's a lot lower. In my state (Vic) it's only slightly higher than UK.
But even that isn't really a great metric. I'd say that Australians probably drive more on average and own older cars (less safe in a crash).

I've done a lot of driving in the UK and in Australia and in general people's driving skills are comparable.

The Aussie channel has more subs because it's older, is run better, and it's really the only dash cam channel that Australians watch.
They also distill it a lot more. The UK channel you posted puts out 3 to 4 videos a week where as the Australian channel does 1 a week.
