Why are my gears suddenly hard to change when they used to be very easy?
I had the technical inspection latetly where they kind of abused the car to measure the pollution from the exhaust but I don't think they put it into gear there.
But I had a broken exhaust anyway and I had to have it repired.
After that the gears don't want to engage. Sometimes I have to force the gear in and I even heard some creaky noise once when I was forcing the 4th in.
It gets better as the engine warms up.
Ideas?

Sounds like a bad motor/transmission mount. Sometimes replacing just one does the trick. Grab a crowbar, jam it near the mount, wiggle it around a bit and it should be obvious.

open the hood and check the shifter mechanism on the transmission for anything weird, you should be able to move it with your hand through all the positions. it could be transmission or motor mounts, if they're sloppy the linkage cable distance changes enough to affect shifting. also check the slave and master cylinders for leaks and check the fluid level and condition. that usually covers the common issues.

Re-read your post...if this happened right after the exhaust i'm thinking that maybe they (the exhaust guys) melted one of the motor/trans mounts. You know, if they had to torch that sucker off. Unlikely though.

Also possible that maybe the exhaust isn't hanging freely, that it's binding. Would explain the creaking.
