It's the big flat plates that hold the wheels in place and just twist with the huge camber changes that really gets me - genius engineering.

Swing axles are the easiest way to get a rear engined car on the road, a passable solution for the 30s but that's about it.
They're so shit the early Beetles had a tendency to oversteer and rollover despite only having 24hp. The rear suspension was improved, but the only real step forward was the IRS rear axle with a second CV joint. Pretty much everyone that builds a Baja or performance oriented Beetle is using those IRS rear ends from Super or Autostick Beetles. The major advantage is camber doesn't change as the suspension moves, so the car is much safer to drive
The car in OP's pic was raised with portal axles from a Bus or Thing btw, because you can't raise a swing axle without major modifications

I donโ€™t understand why the Baja bugs donโ€™t use awd, wouldnโ€™t that be faster anyway, even if there was a way to convert it.

A Baja bug is probably the only 2 wheel drive vehicle I'll give a pass to join the 4x4 club.

A baja bug isn't about speed

baja bug will eat them alive. BAR NONE!
They will go in more places, except "rock crawling" and not break as many parts, heluvalot cheaper to fix and maintain.

I used to see thesee little niggers driving around ALL the time back in the 90s and even late 2000s. Now I've only seen like a handful since 2010.

The T3 Transporter (aka Vanagon) had the VW Syncro four-wheel-drive system and it's more or less based on a beetle platform. There's got to be at least one person who's swapped that setup under a bug body.

Best thing about off-roading in a VW is that you can carry a spare complete motor on a 2x2 trailer.

rarely do i ever say a jeep is reliable, but its more reliable than the bug

One is a chick car the other is a solid offroad build

Yeah maybe because of the early 6v electrics, mechanically the VW is the epitome of reliable.

Beetles need constant maintenance and break in all kinds of different ways, they're just piss fucking simple so it's not a big deal when they do.

These used to be the honda civics of the 80โ€™s and 90โ€™s , people would swap engines out like shirts and pants, back in high school we used to fuck with people by moving their beetles to another parking spot
