maturing is realising swing axles are the best axle layout
>independent but without multiple brittle CV's
>strong cnassis mounted load bearing center single CV
>long down travel unlike IFS / IRS
>low unsprung mass unlike solid axle
>simple and low maintenance
>cheap to manufacture

other axles can't compeet

These are ridiculously unstable and the average driver can't be trusted to handle it at modern road speeds. They also don't offer enough of an advantage for fast offroad to take them over the true durability of a solid axle or the travel of purpose built IFS.

Oh, then yes, they've been alright. I use them more for grabbing on to when hoisting myself up from the ground than anything. If you do end up going with them, make them as close to the body as possible and make them detachable.

They do clear brush nicely, nothing huge but it's helped me avoid some nasty dents.
Anonymous No.28469465 [Report]

Yes.
My brain was on TTB because even though its a 2wd class and that example has custom beams, the majority of class 8 trucks ran gutted TTBs because they were stronger and it was simple as shit to cut&weld the ends to match camber for whatever geometry you built.

Ya I've seen some "pin-on" setups, like an early version of overland larpers that didn't want scratches on their shit from commuting to work.
They were "common" in the 90s.
I remember a fold down style for Dodge trucks when the Mac body debuted so you could have a tight wrap but be able to open the hood.
Haven't seen any in awhile though.

Looks like it was fun. Something I noticed is that a lot of the 4x4er's offroad pic are either just dirt roads or going out of their way to drive over an obstacle right next to a dirt road. That doesn't sound nearly as fun as cruising along tractor paths in a small car.

Must be nice having access to nice junkyards. All of the ones near me are run by the same company, "U Pull & Pay", greedy merchants, and they're always overrun with third worlders who steal peoples cars out of the parking lot when they're in the yard working. They'll walk off with your tools too if you don't always have them in your direct line of sight. You basically need to bring a second person just to stand watch over your tools while you work. If its working properly but just leaking I'd get underneath, hose it down, drive for 10 minutes and see where the fresh leak is.
If its either of the driveshaft seals you can change them without pulling the t-case. Theyre the most common because of spinning shaft vs 2 pieces of metal just sandwiched together.

You definitely need to address it because the transmission and transfer case are married and share the same fluid. If the t-case runs dry so does the trans.

The underbody was tied together, making it super stiff. Also has Wildwood brakes. I can't believe how fast it is for the price.

How dangerous is transfer case binding outside of paved roads?

I just bought my first 4wd car and I'm trying to figure out what's acceptable and what isn't. Manual states that 4WD should never be used on asphalt because there's no center diff which is completely understandable but what about non-paved roads? Dirt roads, packed gravel and such?
I was playing with it a dry grassy field and did some turns in 4WD low range that were definitely too tight for it's taste and the wheel definitely skipped.
I did them in 1st gear at idle RPM and I wasn't trying to push it but it has me concerned.

Is it something that should only be used in mud and snow or am I just overthinking it and as long as it isn't asphalt its okay?
I'm planning to stay on HT tyres it came with. I'm interested in off-highway driving on the weekends but not to the point where I will be plowing into a lake of mud.

The middle column says "insaido" probably interior color, ubder it says mekki irumi, so something in a dark teal blue maybe
The next column says "suiitaa" and under it maakure berin?
The next column says. Sukookaa with the same thing underneath.

Anonymous No.28529597 [Report]

It's fine to use on anything as long as it's not paved. If you're only going straight it won't hurt the drivetrain. It's the turns that put the stress on the drivetrain. On loose surfaces it allows the wheels to slip, on a paved surface the tires can't slip until excess stresses have built up or something breaks.
That said I put my truck in 4H on a pin straight bit of my drive since it needs to be used according to the manual, ten miles a month. I get a few in every trip down that road. I figure it hasn't hurt anything since it doesn't make a pop when it comes out of 4WD like it does when I've been using it up in the dirt and it's still bound up from a turn.

Installed a winch today with a buddies help. He had access to a communal garage which made it nice. I could have done it at home in the driveway but having every tool and being able to roll around on a creeper instead of the dirt was quite nice.
For now the winch hook is hooked to a ziptie on the bottom of the flip up plate to keep it from jangling around until I can get a small sheet of plate to make a loop to hook the hook onto.
Also wired in a large relay so the winch isn't always powered.

I thought about doing that. I wanted it to not be obvious at a first glance that I have a winch within reason. I kinda want to make a bracket to hook the hook onto on the back of the plate. It'll hold the plate in place and keep the hook hidden away. I've already taken the warn red strap off the hook to keep in my glove box with the controller. The wire I haven't tried yet since it's a wireless controller but I can reach the port pretty easily when I pop the hood. It came with a relocation adapter but I doubt I'll use it.

Do smooth brains take off the flat, then fish out the spare? Normally you get the spare ready, set it under the car so if the car falls off the jack somehow, it falls on the spare. Then take off the flat swap the flat and spare so the flat is now under the car so again, if it drops it has something to drop on while you tighten the spare up enough to set it down before the final tighten.

Anonymous No.28540273 [Report] >>28540331

No markup, they submitted my order on their restock order. Got the truck exactly how I wanted it. Toyota is more than happy to ship a custom build if submitted. I think that dealers just don't since they would rather push lot stock or got burned a few too many times from people not wanting what they ordered.
Anonymous No.28540331 [Report] >>28540334
>>28540273
a quick google would show this is false and they don't do orders, they never have, and most likely never will, not even on the supra or the GR86 even though BMW and Subaru both sell via orders. its based on allocation to the dealers, they just build a ton in different configurations and eventually they will build one for your needs although the dealer doesnt pick which ones they get really and depend on dealers playing nice and trading inventory between each other, which they didnt do in 2023 when i got mine because they were flying off the lot. like i wanted mine with the leather and without the sunroof but that is impossible. you're lucky to have found a dealer that didn't markup, i walked away from a few that wanted 5k+ more than sticker.
Anonymous No.28540334 [Report] >>28540366

The dealer I went through submitted the order with their restock. He did warn me that if they didn't get allocated a pro I likely wouldn't be able to get the truck. The order was submitted in October of '19, accepted that month, was built in Texas in December, and was delivered to the dealer in February. I don't know what they did to get me the exact truck I wanted, but I was able to get everything on it minus the side steps, stickers, and the plastic roof rack. Those last ones were probably all dealer installed stuff though.
Anonymous No.28540366 [Report]
>>28540334
so their pro allocation was close enough. they would have gotten that truck whether you were there or not. all of the stuff you didnt get are port installed options and idk if the dealers can change those or not, even if its not been built yet. one dealer told me they were only expecting to get like a dozen pro allocations in they year 2023 where others had that many arriving on the lot every month, already sold before they got there.
