Transmission problem
Hell/o/!

I have a problem with Volvo 240 M47 transmission - 1st and 2nd gear wont engage. Reverse, 3rd, 4th and 5th work fine.
Also, when 3rd, 4th or 5th gear is engaged, then the shifter moves around quite a bit.
What should I check/look into?
Can it be fixed without removing the transmission?

-clutch slave cylinder is failing
-clutch master cylinder is failing
-clutch is failing
-air in the clutch line
One of these probably.

It's fucked.
Do the gears grind or just won't go in at all, or they go in normally, but car just doesn't move in them?
You can start by disassembling the shifter assembly and looking at the shifter forks if they're all in place.
M47 transmissions were called "soup ladles" for a reason, the shifters usually are vague as fuck and worn to hell and back.

check the linkage? (#3)
rebuild the shifter?

Other than that, make sure your slave cylinder is working correctly.

When was the last time the gear oil in the transmission was changed, and what oil did you use?
If that's a "yellow metal" syncro box, it might be like most Aisin manual transmissions up through the 90s and require non-synthetic GL4, and if you or someone else filled it with a synthetic modern GL5 super oil, it'll cause this issue.

You don't know just how many Nissan FS5W71B and 71C transmissions I've "fixed" for people by diagnosing this.
But also what anons have posted above. I'm not familiar with the transmission myself but a quick glance at web results says these things are plagued with such issues.

It isn't going to be the clutch or anything related to it.

Without even knowing a thing about that specific transmission, specifically first and second being locked out (assuming this is a standard 5 speed H pattern) would have me looking at anything from shift linkages to bushings to transmission mounts.

Clutch is alright, it was replaced last year and it has wire clutch (?), not the hydraulic one

No grinding, I can take off with 3rd gear

Thanks, will look into it
>>28469187
Transmission oil was replaced 2 years ago, i'll have to search for the papers for the oil
>>28469195
Yeah, it's 5 speed H pattern, will look into the linkage. Thanks!

It sounds like the selector forks/shifter for 1/2 has broken or come loose. Could be a ‘box out job

Two years ago wasn't long enough ago for the oil to be breaking down, and if it had been replaced with the incorrect oil, your issues would've begun immediately. You're fine on the oil.

I have one with the same transmission. Mine's also worn out, but the play even when in gear is quite a bit, so for gears 3-5 I would call that "normal". Second the notion that it's first/second gear specific. Can you put it into reverse?

that is quite some fucking slop lmao

My first Datsun 510 was like this because it was missing both the shifter pivot and the selector bushings.

Hoping it's linkage slop for OP's sake but I second this

Okay, i'll try to be ready for the worst

Whatever gear was engaged (except reverse), the shifter moved way more around. Reverse goes in with no problem even without the first and second gear

reminds me of my old cressida lol. the selector arm that the end of the shifter sat in had its plastic + rubber layered bushing worn the fuck out, and the big rubber bushing just above that where the shifter bolted down into was also 1/5th of its original size because it had also worn out over the years.
got a delrin and bronze bushing kit and it was basically factory new shifting for as long as i had it, zero side to side play.

Have you tried adjusting your clutch cable?
There should be an adjusting nut here near the clutch fork
Sounds similiar to a problem i had where i needed to adjust the clutch a bit

Definitely check your motor/transmission mounts while you're down there then. Those are rubber and have a lifespan of about 10 years, so if those are original then there's a good chance they're in desperate need of replacement. My shifter also used to move even more severely (especially while running) than vid related, and that was because the drivers-side motor mounts was completely sheared off...

We used to sell our own upgraded bushing kits for the Toyota W58 and R154 on eBay. Even included a single piece billet aluminum replacement for the bonded rubber/steel sleeve bushing in the actuation arm (the arm the actual shift lever engaged & moved) that originally was only replaceable by buying & replacing the entire arm.

Lol my father in laws cabover delivery truck's shifter wiggles as much in gear as it does in neutral. I really need to video that. You can still get it in and out of gear alright though which is amazing. Only second is tricky coming from first.

>>28470274

Would have a problem with all gears if the clutch was still dragging.
