Good so far with a/c. I just charged the Newport with my propane grill bottle for a test. Not exactly sure how much went in for obvious reasons. Right now it's about 90 degrees outside. A/C is cooling pretty good so far, haven't put a thermometer in the vent yet but it feels good. Roughly 45-50 degrees if I had to guess, which is adequate, so far.
I just charged it to what I thought looked safe based on my knowledge of R134. Still need to look up a proper R12 pressure chart, but I figured I'd post it here to get input first.

This picture is at idle.

This picture is revved up to about 1500-2000 rpms.
The pressure drop on the low side looks a little weird. Could be the impurities from the grille bottle or just weird old a/c design that's not as stable.
I replaced the expansion valve and receiver dryer and rebuilt the RV2 compressor.

This is just a test. I'm going to see how it does during the day in the sun. Make sure there's no leaks. Then most likely I'll order the Frosty Cool 12a and charge it with the proper stuff.

Store bought propane has additives for smell that will probably throw off the pressure. The operating pressures are generally much lower with R12 than R134a I think it's supposed to be around 25-35psi on the low side

Finally got the 500 engine running, which means back together and back in the little fuckers goes. Was going to refresh the gearbox seeing as its right there, but we're moving house now, so don't have the time or space for it. Our new place is way roomier and has a big workshop with a lift, so hopefully working on the fleet should be much easier from now on.

I am restoring a car and ive realised I didnt block off the openings on the chassis so shavings from my grinding have been collecting inside them.
Ive used air but id like to also use a mechanical method to clear them out to be super safe. I was thinking of going to buy a big bottle brush or something similar that i can jam into the holes, does anyone here have better ideas?

When vinyl tops aren't properly cared for or stored, the moisture gets under it and rots the everloving shit out of everything. Are you a body man? That's going to need a shitload of body and interior work. Looking at the carpet, I'm very sceptical of the 'good floors' comment as well. Are there pics of the underside?

An original "I know what I got!" boomer.

>vinyl top
It doesn't now but may well have had one originally. That patch at the bottom of the sail panel suggests it did.

>Instrument cluster
All that debris says it's been open to the elements for years so I also doubt the floor pans being solid but that's a relatively minor issue.

The thing's clearly been sitting for a long time so all filler and other bodywork will need to be redone due to moisture contamination. Probably had plenty of mice in it by now. If the frame is good it's not a lost cause but everything will need restoration despite what the boomer thinks he's done. I probably wouldn't go over 3K if it's otherwise really solid but the boomer won't sell it for that. His estate will take whatever they can get however if you wanna wait a bit.

Is an XJ-S a classic? I think they are sexy and want to get one on the cheap to fix up before they become really scarce.

Image is taken from some guy in Alaska who has one, that really made me fall in love with the thing.

My advice as a guy who rolled through dozens of legitimate classics now in the high 5 to low 6 figure range, don't buy it. Wait until you fnd something you love and pay whatever the market price is for it.

I don't have "fuck you" money, price is very much a factor for me.
I'm a big fan of the chrome and crappy wood panelling (Before someone jumps down my throat, I've seen someone take it off and it is just veneer.), and it's the kind of thing Roger Moore could come out of with a martini in his hand and no one would look twice at the situation. And the sound makes me cream myself every time.
You might be right, but I like the idea of getting one and making it my own whilst still trying to retain the character of it. There's a version where someone has modded it to the point where it is supposed to look like if Dodge made it, and I just think it's hideous.

I NEED SOME SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE

So this steering shaft is out of a '55 Thunderbird which is a telescoping column. This sleeve is splined(shaft is too, obviously) and peened to the shaft proper. I am going to be putting this column in my '53 Ford wagon, but it necessitates shortening the entire column and shaft about 5 inches or so. Shortening the tube is no biggie, but I need to extend the splines up the shortened shaft. Who would be able to do that? Standard machine shop or am I looking at sending it out to an driveline specific shop for this?

That one has some serious fuckery going on with its bumpers.

I have a '77 with a 350 and that's the only way I'd own one. The V12 is an incredible motor when it runs right, which is almost never. Nearly all have GM TH400 transmissions stock, so the experience is virtually unchanged with a swap.

Yeah, that photo is from the guy after taking it to the body shop for something, before the bumpers went back on (Custom chrome ones at that IIRC). It's a good channel, he's taken apart the entire motor and put in some (sensible) aftermarket parts, and I *think* he's put in a new manual transmission recently, or is about to. It's Julian Griggs on youtube if anyone is interested.

Taking out the auto gearbox seems to be the immediate go-to for every enthusiast I have come across, which is handy since unlike the XK8 that came after it was built to take one, and most of the inline 6 models were built with it. You can also buy new-made replacements since the supply of those is drying up, but it might run you a pretty penny. Worth it in my opinion though, especially since the stock auto is SHIT.
Having looked at several people take off the cylinder heads, the motor seems to be designed to be taken apart a very specific way with little in the way of room for error. The thing that fucks everythigng up is usually the bolts rusting through and locking things together, along with crappy distributors and vacuum advancers.
Asides from that, generally flushing out the coolant channels from rust seems to be most of what is needed. I have not seen one that wasn't in good condition for a 50 year old engine, aside from someone fucking it up accidentally.

>>28473097
Eh? What? I like the car plenty, why else would I ever consider an ancient model from a company with notorious reliablity issues.
I'm not going to claim to be an expert on the things, but I like the old Jaguar look, and the curves on it are just beautiful.

>shit
Granted it's not a sporting transmission but the car is a cruiser anyway. That said, I would absolutely manual swap one before I'd engine swap one.

>V12
As noted above, the engine is pretty durable but what gets them is the radiator. Each bank has its own thermostat and upper hose. Right side hose goes to the radiator and the coolant path immediately drops down to the bottom 2/3's of the radiator. The problem is the Left Side coolant path goes through the upper 1/3 by itself before joining with the bottom 2/3 for the return to the engine. That upper 1/3 clogs and overheats the Left bank of the engine and the driver doesn't know because the single coolant temp sensor is on the Right bank. This causes the engine to either drop valve seats on the left head OR for the left side cylinder liner seals to fail and the resulting liner free play to pound the block and head to scrap, a la Land Rover V6.

Yes, the smooth sides were Eldorado only. The two thin strips are 1960 only, 1959 was a wide band.

Your choice is to remove the trim from a '59 Series 62 or Sedan de Ville or get a Fleetwood to get what you want. All Eldorados except the Eldorado Brougham were 2-doors and the Brougham is a different degree of nightmare.

Pic related is a '59 Fleetwood.

Summit 750 with vaccuum secondaries on a warmed over 360 magnum. I'm thinking it's ignition not giving me complete burn, but I'll borrow a friend's 650 edelbrock to see how it runs. I tore it apart because it was behaving like it was super lean, and I had a suspicion that the valves might have been chewed up. Valves were fine, and now the heads are back together. I'm going to put the heads and intake on tomorrow.

This car and the 72 are the reason I think only americans know how to make a decent automatic worth a damn.

Well an Imperial in my opinion is fairly unique, especially in Europe.

I've driven it twice, grandma doesn't really let anyone else than her drive it, which is understandable as these used to cost a massive fortune in the 60s when new in Europe.

Wanted to see if the intake valves were caked with carbon. It's a sign you may have a carb leaking fuel into the intake. Unless that idled for an hour before you took it apart, it shouldn't have looked like that.

Anybody ever have a bad crankshaft thrust bearing make a weird squeak/tick noise? I keep thinking it's an accessory drive bearing making the noise, but I can't trace it down with a stethescope. It's loudest at the water pump, but not loud enough to make me think it's that. Non existent on the other accessories. Silent at the heads. Silent on the timing cover bolts. Barely noticeable on the oil pan. I need to get it up on my lift so I can put the stethescope on the bottom of the block.
It started when I was having alternator issues and fucking with the drive belts and tensioners multiple times so it makes me think it's something with that.
I'm just getting really paranoid. I cannot be dealing with rebuilding this engine right now.
Only does it once everything under the hood gets heat soaked from driving. If it gets up to operating temp with the hood open and doesn't heat soak, it won't do it.

A/C is working good with the propane when it's charged. Did actually find a leak at one of the condenser fittings. Just an o-ring that needs replaced. I sprayed everything down with soapy water. No hose leaks surprisingly.

Have any of you guys shelled out for nice/tricked out carbs(Edelbrock VRS, Holley Ultra XP, etc)? Almost everything I have have been swap-meet holleys. I almost want to get a demon just because of how cool the melted edges look or maybe just a decent brawler. Not now, though; I don't need to spend money on that, kek.
Also, I have noticed a distinct lack of carburetor glamor shots on image searches.

Larping as americans is very popular with people who are hillbillies or white trash but it's different from person to person. Some just really love these cars and want to keep them alive, some want to party in them and be a nuisance and destroy them. "pilsnerbilar" which means beer car pretty much. I drink and party when we cruise but I wouldn't consider myself a raggare I just think the cars are cool.

And another tip-
If youre cutting braided stainless flex line (or any flex line really), a cut-off wheel on a hand grinder makes a very clean cut. I usually wrap it with painters tape then cut in the middle. You just have to be very adamant about flushing out shavings afterwards. Also works perfectly on clutch/brake cables on bikes (please dont forget to slide the cable out of the housing BEFORE cuttting).

i borrowed one of those two handed ones that can do 180 degree bends, and also a smaller one that has a little nut/bolt that you can screw into two different holes to bend it around a wheel, I ended up just bending my 3/16 zinc steel tubes by hand when it got too finicky to keep using the benders. The only one I really used was the smaller one, because that let me do some pretty tight 180 deg bends without kinking the line.

The local council just sent a letter notifying us that someone has tipped them off about running a business in a residential area, and we simply sent one back explaining that they're our cars and they're more than welcome to check google earth satellite images and the logbook (UK pink slip equivalent) to see that we not only own the cars, but have done for months. hey guys total wrenchlet here. I tried to bleed brakes and found a leak in the rear above the distribution block. Tried tightening it a little further, couldn't get much more out of it and was worried about stripping the fitting so I stopped. Tried bleeding after that and it still leaked. I had a wrench on both sides like you're supposed to do it. Loosened it and it went in and out by hand just fine so it's not crossthreaded. Is there some little trick my dumb ass is missing? I'll have to check that tomorrow. I'm out of time for now. I figured I just needed to grow a pair so I tried tightening it again, I'm barely getting any movement out of it now and it's still dribbling out when I press the brake. Though it is admittedly tough to get a normal amount of leverage with the muffler and axle right there. Not sure what else to keep trying.

i posted a few months ago about how my 74 Chrysler had shit its transmission cooler.

Over the past week ive installed a new cooler and bled the transmission using pretty much all of a 20 litre bucket of DexIII through it. While i was doing that i also fixed the exhaust, did an engine oil change, blocked off the rads oil cooler lines, flushed the coolant, adjusted the shifter linkage, re did some wiring, fixed the horn and other small things. Runs and shifts great and it feels brand new again fortunately. Now i just want to run a temperature gauge (with nurmerical increments), replace the temp sender and replace the pinion seal and it should be good to hit the road again. Revving it sounds like a vaccuum cleaner now, its great

Man you got super lucky bro usually the ethylene glycol eats the friction material right off the clutch packs on automatics. Seent it before on a few gmโ€™s and a Mercedes that oddly enough had a 4L60e in it (guess they came with them certain years?).
I donโ€™t quite rmemeber how I have my trans cooler setup I think it goes from my water cooler in my mishimoto radiator to an a TCI air cooler mounted in front of the radiator then back to the transmission

Picked up a 1973 Stingray on Thursday. I was spending a week of vacation at my folks and it just popped up. Non smog, overbored 383 with a 4 speed muncie. Middling repaint, excellent interior and mechanicals. Dude had it for 13 years as a project car and added power steering, improved ignition and stuff. Finally got me something that's not some land yacht that I had when I was a kid. She still gets 14mpg in 4th on the highway, surprisingly.

Bonus, the insurance is cheaper than on my 90's Cadillac.

i think going forward ill have to be gentle with the transmission, which probably now means no more towing with the car or uphill accelerations or a quick cheeky burnout since theres no doubt the milkshaking severely reduced its service life. I noticed when i had the pan off, looking into the guts of the transmission, that the outside of the bands had a bunch of surface rust on them which is absolutely from the water damage.

The fluid in the pan was bubblegum pink with a thick layer of sludge that mixed into pinks and blacks, looked like an oil painting when i was stirring it with my finger. But when i was feeling around in the pan i felt no chunks at all and zero iron shavings on the pan magnet, so maybe i got incredibly lucky in which case im thankful. When i test drove it yesterday i stalled it up to launch it and go through all the gears and it all hanged tight.

I just completely bypassed the radiator, cut the stock hardlines short, flared them using my double brake flarer, ran some soft hoses to the front of the radiator where the second hand $20 trans cooler i got was and set it up that way. I really need a temp gauge now though just so i can monitor the engine, the stock one has a broken trace on it i tried to repair but it didn't work so ill just run a new one. Seems to be running cool like before but i shouldn't take my chances and actually find out if its cool or not

I don't have any of those yet, but regardless I remain skeptical that I could even fit a torque wrench in the space we're talking about. There is a giant muffler right between the rear axle and the gas tank. If you look at pictures underneath a 2nd gen camaro you'll see what I mean

oof. not familiar with camaros at all but since you mentioned
>giant muffler right between the rear axle and the gas tank
fuck that explains it, RIP. The only other thing I can think of is the mating surface not on the tube, but the other end, you said it was a distribution block but the pic you sent through looked like an ordinary brake hose - check the sealing surface on the inverted flare there, if that's fucked that could cause a leak.
For what it's worth, toyota brake flare nuts are specced to torque at something like 15 N m which is about 130 in lb, the closest guesstimate to hand feel I can get for that is "starting to get rather tight/hard to turn with a 3 inch long wrench"

Above the distro block* is what I meant. If you ever been under a live axle, it's the typical american style rear hose. And yeah it's a fuckhuge muffler. I think it's called a crossflow style. When I tried tightening the fitting I went in stages, started at "ok just starting to get a little tight", and I could literally hear the leak when I stepped on the brakes. So then I just kept trying to tighten a little more and try the pedal again to see if the leak was gone over and over, but like I said without success. The leak got less severe (I couldn't hear the air bubbles) but never fully went away.

the only other thing i can think of is try getting an inverted flare plug, a new brake hose, and hook it up to the tube. see if it still leaks when you press the pedal. if it does, then it could be the tube that's fucked.
