My 1988 van had 10 cupholders before I added a second table to bring the total up to 14.
However my '90 vic had none until I slapped some cupholders from a later model grand marq on it so...

Blame Toyota.
It's their fault for figuring out Americans wanted atleast 2 cup holders per seat.

My mom has this car, we use the door cup holders for tings like water bottles, the real cupholders are for cans/drinks. I also place my phone in the door "cup holder".

I'm having trouble visualizing where some of those cupholders are. I get the ones the center consoles and in the doors and side molding, but the ones that appear to be next to the driver's and passenger's ears and knees seem weird. Anyway, it's not as if all 19 cupholders are surrounding the driver. It's a seven seater, and, depending on where you're sitting, you'll have two or three cupholders convenient to you, which seems fine.

in Canada, I routinely drive 400km in one shot, which means I like having at least a drink or two near me at all times

To put bottles of water in I guess. My truck has eight, one in each door and four in the center console split front and rear. More than that seems silly.

>Why would anyone need this many cup holders
It's mostly for the kids. Since they'll rarely stop to drink anything, once they're in the car and have to sit still they'll want something to drink then and will need someplace to put it and that place had better be convenient or they'll just put the drink anywhere and it'll spill. Solution: cupholders in all the places.

Further, kids are kept so busy with planned activities now that parents are feeding them fast food while shuttling from soccer, to band, martial arts, .5 hour playdate, school sports, tutor, and so on. The more kids the more hectic it becomes.

The side door cupboards are basically garbage. I wouldn't. I wouldn't rely on them for anything more than a small water bottle. I've never seen a single car that had good side door holders. I usually just use it for storage of other stuff like sunscreen.

They're good for water bottles. The door mounted ones on the front are also right next to the leg vents, so it keeps the water nice and cool in the summer.

I have one of these from the 70s and it says made in BALTIMORE. Havenโ€™t quite figured out how to use it cuz the doors on my 70s car are too thin to support the โ€œarmโ€ on it. And McDonaldโ€™s large cups weigh too much and pull it off the door.
