it's a matter of fact that EGR systems required on vehicles don't actually improve anything related to emissions and simply force vehicles to perform worse and add more, expensive parts to inevitably fail and/or harm the engine later on in during its service life

Dieselgate came to be when volkswagen was cheating emissions testing by programming the ECUs of their TDIs to check if they're being emissions tested and to spoof or "de-tune" its tuning to pass emissions. When the vehicle isn't being tested, the ECU tuned itself back to factory tune. That factory tune allowed the vehicle to achieve 40-50+ MPG, which is ludicrously good for a modern vehicle and is ideally the holy grail of what one with a diesel would hope to attain on a stock vehicle. Turns out that while achieving this incredible fuel efficiency, NOx was released more and that's heckin' bad, thus dieselgate was sparked
