With the panniers, it's a genuinely viable daily rider. only issue is the supposed 3.9 gal fuel tank that I can only ever get 3 gallons into and the 40mpg with my right wrist.

Turns out my airport has free longterm motorcycle parking - with a car it'd cost you $200 a week. I parked there last week and I spotted a few bikes with shoei helmets and cardos just rawdogging it on the mirrors. When I landed today those helmets were still there. Wild to think I bothered chaining up my cheap backup LS2 helmet

Also, while top speed is definitely slower than my old Ninja 650 it feels so effortless to get into 100-110mph on the freeway while carrying a bunch of shit. It just werks. I also think this is faster than a bike ~200lbs lighter and with better aero simply due to gearing and quickshifter.
I resisted ADV's and panniers for so long but now I preach.

Welcome to /dbt/ Get a Honda rebel 300. Budget for gear as well. I'd nudge you towards a naked bike, cruisers are not as comfortable as they look, they have stiff and short suspension unlike the alternatives.

for me its the shovelhead, apprently it can have the lowest idle speed of all and allows you appreciate every single exhaust pulse. this would go nicely with my current 'ku which has the highest redline of all time. 17,000rpm. yamaha.

Posted in old thread accidentally. Thanks to anon yesterday for the tip about pressing the rear brake to trigger the brake light. It's a lot easier than trying to squeeze the front brake, which only links to the light when it's pressed with a good amount of force.
Only issue is I'm sure a distracted driver won't notice the back light getting brighter, so uh, there's that.
Also, I have a rear drum brake and now I'm looking up how long they last. That'll be fun trying to find a replacement for one day.

Great news! Or maybe not. My sister is a flippant bitch.
A month ago I posted about my brother-in-law who's forced to ride a Ryker. Well, my niece is at the age where she's taken an interest in 2 wheels and my sister said it's ok to get her a little dirt bike. My brother-in-law said he should get something he could ride with her, she said ok, and he said he might as well get a dual-sport instead of a regular dirt bike. She the asked me about the smallest ones, I didn't know it would be for him, and I told her about the XR150 and TW200. Little while later I heard she was A-OK with those models. Not much, but it looks like he might actually be off the trike.

Based, not one but two V7 Sports is crazy. It's a 78 V50 that I picked up for $500. I also have an 83 Le Mans III that I am in the early stages of restoring, currently stripping the frame for paint. Both of them are flood bikes, the LM3 was a lot worse though, and been off the road nearly a decade. Would like to get in touch and talk more about tractors that cosplay as sport bikes.

They can afford them easily and like the features and additional power. Motorcycles are toys after all and the more rich people buy them the more for the used market.

I find them overly complex and annoying to work on vs Evo and "Evo style S&S etc" but they can still be stripped down like anybike and bobbed or chopped.

I appreciate sufficient oil flow more because engines are getting expensive to work on. Idling at low RPM does nothing good to lubricate and help cool a stationary Shovelhead (I've '78 and '82). I either idle fast or shut down.

I've never previously heard it asserted Shovels could idle at the lowest RPM of any which makes no mechanical sense given the design commonality from Knuckles through Evo big twins.

If you like cool Shovel tricks they're easy to "kickstart" by hand when warmed up and properly timed. Works for any stock compression ratio Evo and prior if the ignition is set up for kicking (

transmission case will be the biggest expense.
Fuel caps are easy to get off and replace, if you want you can replace the fuel tank if your like fuck it.

It turned over which is good it means all the bits inside are free to move.

/dbt/ sister, when does a motorcycle get too heavy for being a daily driver in the city? I know for sure that bikes like the z400 are light enough to be ridden comfortably inside a big city, but what about a middle weight bike like a mt-07, do they start to get too heavy for start and stop city traffic?

if its built by HD
weight doesn't tell the full story, its how low the center of gravity, lean angel and wheel base is.
I daily my VFR800 without issues at 240kg. Also love the NC750S for city riding due to extremely low COG, even though its also a 220kg bike.
"middle weight" bikes are no issues.

I live in Madrid, here we don't have giant parking lots like in america and bikes are parked on the sidewalk. Sometimes you have to park between other bikes, sometimes you have to reverse it because there's a fence or something blocking the exist. I was just wondering when does a bike became too heavy to push it around in those situations.

Well the alternative is entry level sport bikes that can comfortably do minimal hwy speeds. Or scramblers. Honestly its just that top end stuff jfor sport bikes aren't very good on regular roads or very fun. If you already planned on spending a lot then a cruiser or tourer is just better for it. It just isn't fun having something thats heavy that you can't really push because of road limitations and lack of road maintenance.

Maybe for people in texas, idaho, and cali but on average over 90mph in the US the limit is 75mph max and over 90 is not even a speed you can talk down in court for a lower violation. Ive had friends lose both bikes and cars to crushers in traffic violations but usually it is for 80 on a 55 and 65+ in a school zone. You can't get out of those.

They will remain that way because if every boomer were swallowed by the earth there are far more customers with money than there are old HDs. That's also why swap meets get cleaned out because there are only so many old parts to go around.

Panheads can be had for new bike prices though. Expecting them to be cheap would be absurd. Knucks will be in Vincent territory shortly.

But don't their bikes sell well? My local dealership got 3 preorders for the new DRZ-4SM, and the GSX-R is still the most popular larger sportbike I see around. I'd think there'd be enough of a market to make it worth it.

Why is this a problem for people? Sure, when I was young I rode dirty for a time, but I just went and took the test after a final because I realized I needed to get it done. I was also only riding shit bikes I bought for $300 to get back and forth from my apartment to campus. I don't get people that buy nice or new bikes, but don't take the time to get the piece of paper.

So interesting story.
A Harley tech told me back in the 90's there was a class about boring out the jugs on Evos to make them larger displacement.
The Twin Cam pissed off a lot of old guys because all of the parts are bolt on.
A lot of old timers left over it.
M8 went back to single cam but the parts are still all bolt on.
M8 is actually a powerful and fast engine though.
Late model Twin Cams are also very solid and powerful.

I wish they would bring back the overbuilt 5 speeds and put them with newer motors, ever sincr mr.harleyboomer lent me his 25 years experience fixing and wrenching all twins and v4s including hondas, he sold me the idea that these trannies dont 41% themselves because of simplistic gearing and bearing design, whereas the 6speed took all things wrong from automotives and applied their problems to the 2wheeler world
Classic example of zoomer/millenial engineering r&d not knowing what the fuck theyre doing in practice but larping in principle
Otherwise i wonder if there are aftermarket 5speed designs out there that are indestructible, even if it wasnt neccessarily a 5 but had all the right parts addressing those issues
I forgrt the part name but whereas the 5 speed ia all linear gearing iirc the 6 is more like a car and that plus cheap bearings resulted in all these issues

Sometimes i wish i had recorded that conversation into a mp3 file for reference or knew a book to reference these things so i could accurately spell it out for my esl bros on dbt

Kawi's dirtbikes aren't as good/diverse as Yamaha's. They've never really made a WR450 competitor that was worth a damn. I wish Yamaha would make a Versys competitor with the CP4 but I think they sunk so much money into the Niken that just iterating the Tracer 9 is their main sport touring effort going forward.

The Tracer 9 is a pavement bike, dumbass. 17" wheels all around. The Teneres are Yamaha's ADV bikes.

Nobody here has ever claimed the fucking tracer 9, the huge tall upright sport tourer with a gargantuan fuel tank and factory bags, is a race replica. Kill yourself if you're only going to be conversing in bad faith.

I kinda want the 2025 tracer 9 gt plus but yamaha is now only selling the base version this year. Also my 23 CB500x with over 24,000 miles has alot of upgrades already. It's only missing more power, better chassis and the tech on the gt plus. I guess I'll wait another year or two when I REALLY outgrow this bike.

You should consider a Suzuki GSX-S1000GT+/GX+ if you want a bigger sport tourer. More power, legendary engine, better tech.

I heard about that too. What I would do is buy a 2024 GT or GT+ if you're fancy. Just get a used one with low milage.
