Turns out my airport has free longterm motorcycle parking - with a car it'd cost you $200 a week. I parked there last week and I spotted a few bikes with shoei helmets and cardos just rawdogging it on the mirrors. When I landed today those helmets were still there. Wild to think I bothered chaining up my cheap backup LS2 helmet

Also, while top speed is definitely slower than my old Ninja 650 it feels so effortless to get into 100-110mph on the freeway while carrying a bunch of shit. It just werks. I also think this is faster than a bike ~200lbs lighter and with better aero simply due to gearing and quickshifter.
I resisted ADV's and panniers for so long but now I preach.

Posted in old thread accidentally. Thanks to anon yesterday for the tip about pressing the rear brake to trigger the brake light. It's a lot easier than trying to squeeze the front brake, which only links to the light when it's pressed with a good amount of force.
Only issue is I'm sure a distracted driver won't notice the back light getting brighter, so uh, there's that.
Also, I have a rear drum brake and now I'm looking up how long they last. That'll be fun trying to find a replacement for one day.

Great news! Or maybe not. My sister is a flippant bitch.
A month ago I posted about my brother-in-law who's forced to ride a Ryker. Well, my niece is at the age where she's taken an interest in 2 wheels and my sister said it's ok to get her a little dirt bike. My brother-in-law said he should get something he could ride with her, she said ok, and he said he might as well get a dual-sport instead of a regular dirt bike. She the asked me about the smallest ones, I didn't know it would be for him, and I told her about the XR150 and TW200. Little while later I heard she was A-OK with those models. Not much, but it looks like he might actually be off the trike.

I appreciate sufficient oil flow more because engines are getting expensive to work on. Idling at low RPM does nothing good to lubricate and help cool a stationary Shovelhead (I've '78 and '82). I either idle fast or shut down.

I've never previously heard it asserted Shovels could idle at the lowest RPM of any which makes no mechanical sense given the design commonality from Knuckles through Evo big twins.

If you like cool Shovel tricks they're easy to "kickstart" by hand when warmed up and properly timed. Works for any stock compression ratio Evo and prior if the ignition is set up for kicking (

An old air cooled dirt bike is not that big of a money pit.
transmission case will be the biggest expense.
Fuel caps are easy to get off and replace, if you want you can replace the fuel tank if your like fuck it.

It turned over which is good it means all the bits inside are free to move.

I live in Madrid, here we don't have giant parking lots like in america and bikes are parked on the sidewalk. I was just wondering when does a bike became too heavy to push it around in those situations.

Well the alternative is entry level sport bikes that can comfortably do minimal hwy speeds. Or scramblers. Honestly its just that top end stuff jfor sport bikes aren't very good on regular roads or very fun. If you already planned on spending a lot then a cruiser or tourer is just better for it. It just isn't fun having something thats heavy that you can't really push because of road limitations and lack of road maintenance.

I'm thinking big island for my next leaftour, Port Angeles to Victoria up to Port Alberni and Sproat Lake. I'm going all the way to Maine and back in August so Vancouver and Okanagan will probably need to wait for September.

So interesting story.
A Harley tech told me back in the 90's there was a class about boring out the jugs on Evos to make them larger displacement.
The Twin Cam pissed off a lot of old guys because all of the parts are bolt on.
A lot of old timers left over it.
M8 went back to single cam but the parts are still all bolt on.
M8 is actually a powerful and fast engine though.
Late model Twin Cams are also very solid and powerful.

I wish they would bring back the overbuilt 5 speeds and put them with newer motors, ever sincr mr.harleyboomer lent me his 25 years experience fixing and wrenching all twins and v4s including hondas, he sold me the idea that these trannies dont 41% themselves because of simplistic gearing and bearing design, whereas the 6speed took all things wrong from automotives and applied their problems to the 2wheeler world
Classic example of zoomer/millenial engineering r&d not knowing what the fuck theyre doing in practice but larping in principle
Otherwise i wonder if there are aftermarket 5speed designs out there that are indestructible, even if it wasnt neccessarily a 5 but had all the right parts addressing those issues
I forgrt the part name but whereas the 5 speed ia all linear gearing iirc the 6 is more like a car and that plus cheap bearings resulted in all these issues

Sometimes i wish i had recorded that conversation into a mp3 file for reference or knew a book to reference these things so i could accurately spell it out for my esl bros on dbt

Kawi's dirtbikes aren't as good/diverse as Yamaha's. They've never really made a WR450 competitor that was worth a damn. I wish Yamaha would make a Versys competitor with the CP4 but I think they sunk so much money into the Niken that just iterating the Tracer 9 is their main sport touring effort going forward.
