For me it's because it represents what could have been. It's a reminder of how close we got to having a truly great car, but didn't because of stupid corporate red tape. They could have used a turbo engine from the WRX or the IS250 and it would have been brilliant. Literally the perfect car. But they didn't want it interfering with sales of other cars so they had to intentionally make it slow. Because how do you sell a $50000 4 cylinder supra or a $45000 sti when you can get the BRZ for 25k and it's just as quick.

Blackpill incoming. Most anons here do not own a sportscar, hell I'd say only about 50% of them own a car at all. They cope by saying "fun" cars are too expensive, or are too old, etc. Yet the BRZ and 86 are affordable, fun, and new. So they need a reason for it not be worth having, because itโ€™s easier for anons to nitpick about MUH TORQUE DIP or MUH MCDONALDS than to admit the truth. Which is that theyโ€™d rather spend their money on DoorDash, vidya, anime figures, and instant gratification.
All the while the 86 sits right there in the market (and my garage), perfectly attainable, exposing their lack of commitment simply by existing.

At the end of the day, the 86 like the Civic Type R or the Miata, a litmus test. Either you care enough about driving to own one (or something better), or you donโ€™t.

You'll see a lot of it in this thread, car-less bus riders giving their ill conceived reasons why the 86 is bad, while real 86 and BRZ owners will always go on and on about how much they love their slow little shitbox.

Weeb car from Japan or Gook car. Goes for both. Will also be used for Chinese cars should they get posted.
>Monster Truck
Lots of visual "features" that do nothing. Fake vents, giant wheel gaps to handle bad suspension, exterior and interior details that have to overcompensate for the lack of power. Hence, "Monster Truck" because those are the same. It's a standard build with a bunch of random crap piled on top. (but it's cool for actual monster trucks because they are big and have power.)

This is a classic USGPMT, right here. The BR86 is one too.

If you were there and part of the hype train when the first gen was announced you would understand the hate. I wanted one so bad. Then my local dealer got a shipment of them in and I got to test drive one that same day. Nearly 3 years of hype gone in an instant and replaced with hatred and disappointment.

I know this maybe hard to understand for the younger people on this board but being someone that lived through the 90s/00s where a clean 240sx could be had for as low as $3k at one point, having the opportunity to buy an FRS that felt the same without any of the charm for over $20k felt like an insult. I'm not going to bend over backwards at the chance to pay extra for something that used to be a given. The engine sounds like a jar of angry bees being shaken while fuck-all acceleration happens and the gear shifter felt like it was made entirely of rubber-bands.

It broke my JDM-only delusions in a single test drive. Its like a 90s car that was put back into production but in the worst way possible. Like it missed 20 years of evolution.

1/4-Mile: 14.7 sec @ 97 mph
This is much worse. BTW real numbers.
https://www.caranddriver.com/toyota/gr-86
C/D TEST RESULTS
60 mph: 6.1 sec
1/4-Mile: 14.7 sec @ 97 mph
100 mph: 15.6 sec
130 mph: 31.4 sec
Considering the top speed of the car is 130mph and it takes 30s to reach it, and 15s to reach 100mph, the car is almost never driving at those speeds. That 15s rollout to 100mph means that anywhere but the longest of roads you tapped out at maybe 50-70mph.
The engine struggles with oil and fuel off the straights, and the suspension/brakes aren't big enough to reasonably allow it to decelerate from 70-30mph in any reasonable amount of time.

All this combined means that you have a car which you simply can't go fast in.
>What is it about this car that causes so much seethe, particularly on /o/?
It's a slow and dumb car, that gets glazed by zoomers (given more appreciation than it deserves) because it's also one of the ONLY cars that LOOKS a little sporty that they can afford.
For auto enthusiasts this is really stupid. The equivalent of a console gamer saying their PS5 outperforms every PC. (and any PC that is better than a PS5 is "too expensive!")

Yes and you can get it RWD+Manual.
But it's simply just another dumb slow car. It's a shitbox.
How many threads do we need about a shitbox?
To wit, if you go on /v/, do you want to see content about games or just a bunch of posts about the shitbox they bought?

Is the same as getting excited for the BR86. Happy for anyone who owns one and I myself have considered one or a Miata to do some fun driving. But all this cope and fucking nonsense about how it's "ACTUALLY AN AMAZING CAR" blah blah blah needs to stop.
>>28477092
It's far better to get a used RWD+Manual because you can either get a really good luxury/performance car, or go the other way and heavily undercut the $30k you would pay for a new BR86.
You can get a Camaro with RWD+Manual for under 20k and that is a MUCH better car. (Even though it's only a B- car, overall)

Yea, but the looks aren't the entire point. Who buys a car just for the looks? The point of american muscle is the v8, the point of jdm is them being nimble and quick, etc...

The new Egoboosts are fast as hell.
4.5s 0-60
350 torKKKs

They feel faster than the GTs in city traffic due to the turbo and lighter weight. Mustang V8s are weak as shit on the low-end.

I've plotted the power curves of both engines over each other and Egoboost is even stronger than the V8 in the very low RPM range for getting rolling, putting around town.

The Egoboost is super fuel efficient, >36MPG on long roundtrips I did, and fast enough when you want. Feels more nimble than the V8 too. It's an amazing value if you don't care about badges or stigma. But you can't shift gears at all KEK

Every car has limitations. GayR86 just has too many weaknesses to be worth "muh handling", especially when you compare it to the cheap American Egoboost.

U S GAY, U S GAY, U S GAY!

The second gen is worth the money, its just money I dont think ill ever have to blow on financing a new car. 30-35k is a bracket I think is much more obtainable to a generation dealing with the second most expensive housing in the world.

Looks like starting MSRP in AUS is $47,900 which is $31,100 USD. MSRP is USA is $30,000, so basically the same.
>30k AUD
That's $19,500 USD. That ain't gonna happen, big guy. A Nissan Versa starts at $17,200.

The GR86 has 25 more hp and 30 lb-ft of torque and it's still really slow. That being said you can get a ~2014 BRZ/FRS with 95k miles for like $14k. GR86 will be half the miles for $25k.

Iโ€™m not much of a car guy. I drive a late โ€˜00s BMW e82 (6-speed) my parents got me in the late โ€˜10s, itโ€™s fine. (Looks like pic related) Anyway, I too didnโ€™t get the hate for the GR86. It looked pretty cool to me. Then a couple of weeks ago while out driving I finally saw one, in the yellow I liked, and I finally understood the hate. It was making a hilariously loud amount of noise but seemed to be crawling. My +15 yr old BMW shitbox, with a naturally aspirated 6 cyl. that only made 230 hp when new and which probably makes less now as itโ€™s old and I havenโ€™t modified it at all, not only could leave it in the dust, but sounded way better too. Ultimately theyโ€™re too much money for the subpar performance.

No one really cares about rigidity lets be honest, 99.3% of people aren't pushing their car to that limit.
Soft tops are ugly and require high maintenance
So it only means having the top off means you can experience your surroundings much better. If you enjoy driving.

The BRZ also has an 8 inch ipad dash. In fact, the base Camaro has a smaller infotainment than the base 2nd gen BRZ. Both the center screen and the gauge cluster screen are smaller.

Never in 20+ years of driving have I EVER heard someone complain about the thickness of a steering wheel.

>Only the SS is worth it and that's $20k plus tip more
A 1LS with the LTG was 25k new until 2023 and can make nearly 400hp with E85 and a tune while weighing ~3300lbs.
A supercharged LGX can also make a bit over 400hp at around ~3500lbs.
SS suspension and wheels can be bolted on without additional modification. It was even a factory option on 1LT/2LT/3LT RS models.
>It's not a terrible car but for straight line speed I'd rather have an s550 stang
Stock for stock they're matched in the quarter mile but the Camaro destroyed the S550 GT in everything else. A regular SS is on par with the GT performance and a SS 1LE can beat a Mach 1 HP for nearly 15k less. The Coyote excels with boost over the LT1.

What the fuck are we even arguing about at this point.

How is this not an integrated dash, im confused... Youre upset because it sticks out half an inch?
>You can always add power, it's much harder to remove weight.
The opposite. I can remove seats, sound deadening, etc., with no cost to reliability... Power always must come with whole lot of necessary upgrades.
Also the power to weight ratio is what im referring to. 500lbs heavier but literally twice the power. It doesnt have too much weight unless you are talking about autistic parking lot cope driving (auto cross)... on any real racetrack the camaro will destroy the brz.
Anyways, for a few thousand dollars i can slap a supercharger or more aggressive cams or both and make like 700whp lel. Tell me when a brz even makes 300 whp reliably.

600 pounds heavier. Brz with an HKS super does 400. Even if you remove your air conditioning it's not coming close. The brz will always be the more nimble, responsive car.
>what are we arguing about
Aesthetics, driving qualities. The camaro not being a replacement for a light NA coupe like a brz. It's a pony car and mustang competitor. For daily driving the camaro is faster and more planted. The 86 slides everywhere on shitty prius tires. I think the 86 is more fun but that's not something you can quantify with benchracing stats. And if I were going to get a maro I would want an actual V8, simple as. Would rather drive a bespoke 4cyl that holds its own rather than be mogged by the big brother trim

Aesthetics are purely subjective. I didn't care much for the 6th gens looks when it was first debuted. I actually thought that it was just a midcycle refresh to the 5th gen until the 2017 came out. The 6th gen blurs the line between pony car and sports car, even more so with the 1LE option. The lightweight sports segment doesn't really do anything for me. Its why despite always liking Miatas I've never bought one. If one showed up in my garage with my name on it I would absolutely drive the fuck out of it but that's quite different than having to actually buy one. My first experience drifting was in my cousins S15 when I visited them in Japan in 2003.

When I test drove my Camaro I was expecting a dumb muscle straight line hog like almost every pony car that came before. In a matter of seconds it won me over. If you have such strong beliefs in the BRZ than surely your opinion will hold steadfast in the face of a test drive.

I actually daily picrel, and I test drove it against the ecoboost and nuwrx. I just don't like the styling of the camaro, the belt line looks weird, the face is busy, and the interior isn't much better. Subjective yeah but the looks and interior visibility are enough to put me off entirely. If I were to purchase a 2nd car or trade in the future in the pony car class I'd probably go with a mach 1. My three requirements were no ipad, must be manual, and under 40k. I wanted something new and unmolested. Also I live in a really dense area and you can't go 500 feet on any road without bumping up against someone's bumper. The rear end comes loose in 2nd gear under 30 mph, and in the rain it feels like it's on ice skates. I really enjoy it. It's a modern 240.

I don't have strong opinions on the 2nd gens like I do the first. To me iPad-dash means a giant tablet in the center like a VB WRX or S650 Mustang. I don't care about the plastic housing not being perfectly flush with the rest of the dash. They did that for 3 reasons
It was cheaper
It makes replacing the screen easier depending on if its the base/higher trim
It had to be angled slightly down because the interior is the same on convertible models.
The back of the infotainment is also illuminated, either an off-white or RGB depending on trim

Where I live used to be a Podunk town just 10 years ago but now traffic is a crapshoot. It's either backed up half way to the next intersection or a wide open road. The problem is that the people here are afraid of the gas pedal and take a quarter mile to get 40.

With the traction control completely disabled I've tempted the rear to lose control up to 4th gear. Going sideways is fun in games and has it's use in real life too, but unfortunately maintaining grip is almost always faster.

Yeah that's fair, the Camaro dash definitely isn't as egregious as the VB or S650, but I'm really picky about certain design elements feeling distracting. I even hate that the ND Miata had an ipad. Unironically ruins the car for me. I wish car manufacturers would retvrn to this layout.
No doubt sliding around is slower and goofy, and the reason why the gt86 subreddit is filled with daily crashes, but the 86 isn't a serious car. It has fun factor going for it which you can't quantify to /o/ benchracers. Losing the rear is also really forgiving in an 86, a baby on xanax could save it in oversteer with the laziest countersteering input

Cool. And the 35-100 mph is also total garbage. Even worse than the 0-60 because at least with 0-60 the light weight is helpful. When accelerating from 35 mph traction largely isn't a concern and it's all about power, which at 86 doesn't have.

Thats a dumb argument because used BRZs also exist. You can get a used BRZ for like $5k.
But to me a $50k camaro is still preferable to a $30k BRZ or a $5k used BRZ lol.
Hell I spent ~$38k on my (used) camaro after all taxes/fees/etc and I enjoy it MUCH more than I would with a $5k used brz, a $20k c6 vette, or a $30k new brz
So the lesson is just save enough money until you can buy a real car and don't mess around with "entry level" sports cars just because they are cheaper.

Where are you seeing used BRZs for 5000 dollars? Maybe if it's got over 200k miles and a rebuilt title. Ones with manual, <100k miles, and a clean title usually go for $18-22k in the midwest.

I've already posted itt, but I own a 2014 Scion frs, and I love it. I'm not going to post a picture because I know that /o/ would roast the fuck out of my wheel gap. I promise I'm working on it.
I moved down to 16 inch wheels and removed the clutch assist spring, beyond that it's mostly stock outside of visual flair, things like lights.
The throw out bearing went at about 95,000 km, and I had to pay about 2,000 to get the whole transmission removed just to replace it, this is unfortunately an extremely common problem with this car. It shattered my flywheel too, but beyond that the car has never given me any problems even when I've driven it roughly or made mistakes.

I'll hopefully be getting either lowering springs or coilovers sometime this season, but that's up to my finances. Considering I don't drive this car during the winter if I don't get those in by august, it's just not going to be worth it this year.

I just love my 86. Simple as.
