sorry if this is a lame question but I mostly like cars because they look cool, and I like arcade racing games. My question is, how do people seem to know everything about cars, like the specs and stuff, do they just memorize them? It seems insane to me. I can't into engineering and mostly just like cars for the aesthetics and watching things go vroom and it amazes me how people can be like mini encyclopedias

Yeah I guess that makes sense, I couldn't see myself being one of those people but I do appreciate cars aesthetically and like driving. Would that make me a fake fan lmao

I wouldn't consider it fake. Besides, you'll most likely end up learning more the more more you spend time with (your) cars. What kind of cars do you like, anon?

I guess I'm more of a casual car fan. I mostly like 80s and 90s cars, just love the design philosophy from that time, I feel like most people probably agree, I don't have a car right now though sadly I just love arcade racing games

in the sense that you eventually recognize formulas that you use all the time in school, or come to know where everything is located at a store you visit often. there's not really a reason to make flash cards or anything but if you're constantly exposed to things like spec sheet numbers and lap times and engine codes and chassis codes they just occupy a little space you cultivate for them if you care about that kind of thing

Old Fag here. We used to read about all the specs of cars, new & old, in magazines like Motor Trend, Hot Rod, & Popular Mechanics. After a while, your brain begins to notice patterns in engine displacement, reliable transmissions, suspension setups, tire/wheel size, etc. The tech of the 80s wasn’t that different from the tech of the 50/60s as far as cars, it was just de-tuned for gas mileage. So our Boomer Dads could share their knowledge with their Gen X kids.

Well, that's how it starts. Then you're going to find one car in particular that really catches your attention and you'll learn about it. And that knowledge (most of the time) is transferable. That's how people just "know" things. Enjoy the ride, anon. Hopefully you'll have your own car that you can learn and experiment on in the future. W0HTF

Many cars are based on a pretty small number of platforms and you will also have almost the same car with different branding, as for classics most cars, the engine outputs are similar to other brands if you account for engine size in most cases. So its not about knowing the car generally but the brand, the year and platform if needed. The platform might only change after 10 years so even knowing cars back to the 50s is not that hard and then you have cars that change the body but mechanicals don't change that much.

Its interesting to know about the big advancements, its not like people know every variant of a pentium 4 for instance.

Here is one of the people I am talking about. This faggot has never driven a 944 or he would know it is a shitbox and will never be a collectible car.
