Ok /o/ I'm looking at getting a new fun/"enthusiast" daily around 40k USD. Right now I have a GR86 which is great, but would like to get something more practical/refined.

I'd prefer lighter (no american), RWD/AWD, and manual. So far I have these on the list:

Seems like a good fit on paper, haven't had a chance to find a manual to test drive. Lower mileage nice ones do get into the mid 40s.

>Golf R MK 7.5
Definitely a nice interior and comfy as a daily, not really engaging drive, but still fun. Stupid reliable, especially for a VW. Seems like the practical choice. MK8 would be nice, but too expensive and dumb infotainment

>GR Corolla
Doesn't really feel like a step up in the refined department, but I'm trying one out tomorrow. Hopefully it impresses, they do seem fun, but I can't see it being the better choice for me over a Golf R.

I want to test one out just to cross it off, these look like shit and FWD. Interior does seem nice though.

My previous DD was a MK7 GTI and I enjoyed it for what it was, didn't have any issues, but I rotate through cars after just a couple years.

$40k can also get you a base S650 Mustang GT but I heard they need help in the dynamics dept.

Same problems with Ford and Dodge engines cylinder deactivation and using shit like sintered metal or plasticlip valve phase limiters.
There's an easy fix to that you're gonna end up doing anyway which is rebuild the top end and get rid of all of that shit and use lifter tie bars so it doesn't turn into a grenade when you get curious how high in the band you can shift it.

I wouldn't say they're maxed out but it's not like the old days where you could go 5 grand worth of work and make 900 whp with junkyard parts and some light machine work.
All of these newer engines are built way too tight in tolerance which is why a lot of old heads buy used high mile engines for a starting point. Already heat stress relieved and less shit they have to open tolerances up on. Built loose to go fast is not a meme even though it is.

fk8's are great. for a little bit more you CAN find an FL5 for MSRP somewhere. I think they look worse than FK8's though but most people think the opposite.
The M2 is probably the most refined inside and out...just BMW bullshit you're going to have to deal with. It's going to break and be expensive for every little thing.

I don't even think its a matter of tolerances. Just the cars have very little in terms of efficiency left you can extract without seriously compromising reliability, especially if they're N/A. Its like a N/A Honda Engine like a F20C or similar that won't make crazy power with bolt ons until you step up to cams and even then. IE GM already did everything they could to get the most horsepower out of the car without it killing itself or not passing emissions at all

Tight tolerances = good for horsepower usually.

Honestly I've seen Integra Type Ss for $40k and its a hell of a car for that amount. I think they depreciated worse than the FL5s. Definitely worth considering if you want a only car, they're really nice inside and spacious

Test drove the GR Corolla today, honestly....kinda disappointed. By no means a bad car, but incredibly overrated and shilled by jurnos, go figure. Feels expensive for what it is.

The Rolla is definitely more engaging and more fun, but the compromise with the livability between it and the Golf R is huge. Honestly, I think it was just too high expectations after constantly hearing about how great it was. I would keep my GR86 over getting the GRC.
