Excessive regulations mean it's cheaper and easier to train thousands of them and replace them as they accumulate CSA points violations and "preventable" accidents than to retain mediocre to average drivers. With a large enough population you might even filter through enough the trash drivers and their trash habits until you have a skilled-enough team willing to work for peanuts. And the best part? You don't even have to worry about liability since the expended driver can be at fault for everything.

Couple of years back I was listing to a news story on the radio and they were interviewing trucking company owners and they said they can't get drivers and have to turndown business.

Seems the average age of a truck driver nowadays is 57.

I also remember reading about a truck driver training school in Chicago that was busted for simply handing out certifications to literally anybody who could pay for the course.

The trucking company owners admitted part of the problem was existing truckers jumping ship from one company to another for higher wages and benefits but again, that's because there are fewer and fewer and truckers ever year as the oldsters retire and young people don't want to become truckers.

Which doesn't surprise me, as many of my friend's kids (we're GenXers in our 50s) don't even have drivers licenses and have no intention of ever getting one. There are almost a dozen zoomers where I work who take Uber to and from work every day.

He was a contractor so they sent us a replacement one time, I asked the guy if their company knew and why he's allowed to work. He said they DID know and got complaints constantly, but kept him on Z tier jobs because he was a complete no life loser who would accept any shitty contract anywhere in the states. It was insane.

This isn't about "nobody wants to work/drive anymore", trucking has always been a miserable job, and it has only gotten worse as companies have become more optimized at squeezing every last bit of life out of their workers. Having to be on the road for weeks far away from home barely sleeping so you can meet unreasonable timetables while also being liable when you inevitably fuck up is just not worth what they're paying.

But the obvious thing is if you have a neck >18” I belive, which would include that 5’8” 308lb man who has no neck, they start sending you for sleep tests and a bunch of stuff to maintain your medical card.

My work would send me to a corporate urgent care that did all of the DOT stuff by the book, but even then if I got the cool Puerto Rican medical assistant like “ahh close enough” and the PA from Da Islands, you could skate on like 2pts on a BP test or an inch on the neck. If you got the bitch doctor, then she’s going to stress you out, take your BP when you have a 110 pulse and then give you a short medical card.

Then there’s the places where you’re recommended by the other old driver who had problems at the corporate place. I got a DOT physical from a chiropractor once that was like “read this 20/20 vision sign from 10ft away, touch your toes, ok you’re good!”

But you can’t fake the DOT physicals like the vaccine cards. Everything is electronic now, so you have to send all the info from the card to the state and it includes a bunch of info from the MD-DO-PA-NP or whoever did it. Maybe the state doesn’t actually check with the doc office to see if it’s legit, I’ve never tried. Most people I’ve talked to have the doctor who doesn’t care.
