They're good because they have a massive aftermarket. Stock they're pretty lame.
Even the fucking brits managed to line up the pumpkins so you dont have to drag 2x as much dirt but did Jeep? Nope.

They built a reputation of being mechanically reliable, fairly inexpensive yet common, huge aftermarket, and prior to the nu-bronco nothing else on the road looked like a jeep. Many jeeps were known to hit 150k miles of kinda hard use and that I6 engine would still be going.

Today they're $80,000 luxobarges with so much shit that can go wrong on them and often do have things go wrong. the 4xe wasn't in production for like 6 months because of how expensive and unreliable it was. They now have competition from the bronco and jeeps are still good off roaders, but now they're all 4-door with a truck bed, they're just not as good anymore.

you can still buy a base wrangler. 2 doors, v6, 6 speed, not much else. the only "luxobarge" features it has are power locks and windows.

Meh, no one makes reliable vehicles anymore. Even EVs that should be more reliable by default due to having less mechanical parts won't last 10+ years without expensive repairs.

Light compared to many other offroaders. Good angles with the wheels at the corners. Manual with a huge aftermarket selection of diff gearing, lockers, and axles which can be easily swapped. Said gearing improvements can help with adding larger diameter tires for better clearance and approach angles.
They used to be cheap, 10 years ago a Pentastar 6-speed was $19k new. I know because I got one new in 2015 for under 20k.
A smart person buys the base sport model and swaps out the diffs and axles to be better than a higher trim for less money.

These things are giant piles of shit and shouldn't be allowed on the road. If you're going sub 40mph and want snapped drag links at the slightest obstacle, go buy one. Ford had twin I beam starting in the 60s? Why can't Chrysler update this?

Only due to availability.
When the engine seizes they send Hakeem into town with his AK47 to steal another truck and the first thing he comes across is another hilux so he crushes the owners skull with his rifle butt and drives it back to camp.

I'd say something like the Audi dakar buggy or baja trophy trucks are probably the best 'conventional' examples of overland mobility on a 4x4 platform. Things like the flyer-72, desert patrol vehicle, or tomcar are in this conversation as well.
If you wanna be more radical, you got things like the m520 goer or m561 gamma goat.
If you wanna be even *more* radical, well, examples don't exist, but I got ideas.
The most common way things get stuck is mud and snow. The second most common is blown tyres. And the third most common is high centering. You can reduce the third problem by jacking up ride heights, but this is like putting a band-aid on a sucking chest wound. It doesn't solve the fundamental problem; which is, lack of traction under the center of gravity.
You can solve lateral high centering by adding another row of wheels or using tracks, but nobody has yet to implement the obvious solution to longitudinal high centering, which is wheels in the middle too.

Americans don't exactly have a lot of (any) solid front+rear axle off roaders to choose from nowadays so it kind of wins by default here.

Incorrect.
You want one side open so air trapped in the chest cavity can exit on exhale but the flap will seal against the wound on inhale to prevent additional air from entering the chest cavity.

The defenders of the same era kicked the shit out of them right out of the box. Similar sized tires and axle clearance but the chassis and body are that much more higher so the approach, break over and departure are amazing. Also the constant AWD and selecting the center lock on the fly are good as well.

>if you are driving with locked or straight hubs you more likely can grab 4x4 on the fly once you have the front shaft rotating and are driving straight as well.

Too short, can't sleep in the back. How do they continually fuck up a nearly perfect car camping vehicle? They need to bring back the LJ wheelbase. More narrow to fit on paths and longer for a reasonable amount of cargo space.

Defenders have worse departure angles (massive rear overhang), and don't have available F+R lockers like the Wrangler does. What the Defenders do have going for them is they still were primarily designed as utility vehicles so you could get cab chassis variants and a factory PTO, and even a 1-ton chassis. stuff Jeep hasn't offered since the 70s.
