Supermotos are less capable than sport bikes in most ways when you look at them as a whole package instead of individual specs. They're conversions of bikes that might be missing aerodynamics and physical dimensions and that does put a hard limit to how much you can pimp it out for performance.

The DRZ-400SM is one of the best supermotos ever but I would still bet, any day of the week, a Ninja 300 over it in any kind of race because it has better suspension, better aerodynamics, better rider position, much lower to the ground, and with tires that are specifically made for that kind of performance. And its engine isn't even as big.

Oh that's a whole different set of conditions.
For the street a lot of people would actually prefer heavy Cruisers to Supermotos because the heavier ride makes a smoother ride and single-cylinder thumpers aren't really known for smooth or pleasant rides once they hit 65-70. Sport bikes and gixxin is if you're into that sort of thing.

That's why Harvey Donaldson still has something resembling a business. Otherwise, as a personal matter, hell yeah give me the ground clearance of a KLX-300SM any day of the week

I would say 99% of people who buy motorcycles for the street want softtails or ADV instead of a supermoto. It's not even a comparison. Supermoto is like putting a v8 on your ford pinto. Damn it's fun, holy shit that's a horrible ride.

A katana or a ninja still has aerodynamics to make it a fun ride while being able to do a little bit more. A soft tail or a gold wing can do all of that and can be used as a general purpose vehicle and has legs, but I could never take it off road like I can any other supermoto variant.

All about use cases and what people are familiar with. This didn't used to be such a big deal back in the day but now that dealers basically don't even let you sit on bikes anymore, more people want to be certain what they are buying is exactly the fit for them and never experiment.

It seems like a lot but keep in mind KLRs are heavy, 650 seems like a bunch but once it tries moving all of that mass you find that it performs more like a tractor in every gear. You have to wring it to really get that 650 torque out.

Now if you're coming from a 250cc bike, yeah it's going to feel like a lot, lot more. It's still not going to instantly kill you if you wring out the throttle.

If you're responsible it'd probably be alright, it's not too heavy, it's got a fairly low seat height, maintenance is fairly simple, and, while it's fairly quick, and has plenty of power, the motor and throttle response isn't insanely snaply like a 600cc i4 that's constantly tempting you to crack it open and turn yourself into a meat crayon. 2015 Aprilia RSV4.
Had the shocks off doing a rebuild and figured I would knock out some other items while I waited for new valves. Ordered Barnette clutches from AF1.
I just installed a new carbon fiber clutch. I ordered kevlar but they were out and it was a 6 week wait so they subbed carbon fiber.

Install went smoothly.

Got everything together. Motul 7100 10w40. HiFlo filter.

Now I can't get it into neutral with the engine running while sitting still. Its also hard to shift it into second while not moving. Also getting clutch drag with the lever all the way in.
Ive adjusted the clutch.
Zero free play- no change.
2-3mm free play, same issue.
negative free play - slips while riding - still drags at stop lights and can't hit neutral.

Ive put about 120 miles on it to see if it was a wear-in issue but that didn't help. I put about 40 miles on the bike every day. 20 highway 20 city traffic so the dragging and no neutral sucks.

Should I switch oils or switch clutches? Ive never used CF clutches so I don't know if the drag is normal but I have had issues with the wrong oil causing hard shifting and hard to find neutral.

Roads were very different. The N roads that are major single carrigeways, were like the open fast roads in Scotland, but I spent a lot of time on bumpy horrible narrow roads which were not that enjoyable but the scenery was amazing.

What you do have on the Irish coast is incredibly fun tight fast twisties which just don't really happen anywhere in England and Scotland, those parts were well worth it. Now I want to go to Spain where a lot of the mountain roads are like that.

For future route planning I've learned for fun roads you need coast or mountains, anything else is usually boring.

From experience with auto transmissions and limited slip diffs, that was what I was thinking.
Its a "trick" to stick an extra disc in an 8.8 limited slip but it takes a little while for it to break in and behave normally, like 100-150 miles
