These boots (Crossair X) will constitute approximately a week's pay for me.
I have never spent this much on an article of clothing, ever.
I use my bike for commuting 90% of the time, and a couple miles of trail riding once a month.
I wanted something nice because legs and feet are the most common injuries.
Am I going to regret this?

This is one of the great tragedies of our age, absolutely gorgeous vista in east central PA looking across the Delaware was recently marred completely by a solar farm
A buddy of mine bought a house in rural NJ surrounded by gorgeous woods, two years on a huge plot was sold to a solar panel plant, now he looks their little stream right to it. It’s like four or five duplexes on a tiny quiet street all now with garbage in their front yards
At least from far away the windmills sometimes look okay, the solar panel farms are the worst

Anyone know where an /o/tist can source really had to find New Old Stock bike parts? Even Japanese websites? I'm looking for Honda 37200-MG1-671, superseded by Honda 37200-MG1-672, a mechanical/analogue gauge for a 1983 Honda CB1000 Custom/"C". It's been shitting the bed for a bit, and then just recently hit the back side of the peg and popped the needle off on the 4th of July. The odometer still seems to be rolling correctly, however, so I can keep track of my fuel state. I have the gauge here on my desk and unfortunately, there's strip club glitter on the inside of it that I can see. The gauge is also very difficult to get apart to inspect, and I've been trying..

I like my edits to be manic with lots of bullshit, maybe a symptom of being a zoomer but I feel like I'm wasting time if I let anything sit on the screen for longer than 6 or 7 seconds unless it's particularly interesting/impressive. And this is even more of a concern doing it with bike videos because I know I can't ride for shit so I have to rely on communicating a general emotion of excitement and pace with things outside of just the video
But that being said I appreciate the words and given how nicely this one turned out maybe I'll kick into gear and actually finish my other video now

Also if anyone here wants a laugh, I'm like 5'4" with a 28 or 29 inch inseam I think. They only made this bike for 1983 after the CB900 from 1982. Before riding motorcycles, my only experience has been riding bicycles and once, an electric bike. On this motorcycle, my dad used to take me out on it every once in a while when I was little, and that's it. 90s born kid btw. It's like 973cc or so and 89hp.

I took the MSF course on May 10th/11th and added my endorsement a couple of days afterward. My dad couldn't get his leg over the seat anymore after having both knees replaced, so I found him a 1983 VT500 Shadow to ride while I took this one over. Yes I have tipped it over a couple of times, but it's been all amateur stopping/standstill stuff (don't turn the bars without a plan for where the CoG goes). Picking up a 600lb bike gets old incredibly fast, but it's fantastic to run on the roads out where I am. I got it running again when it had like 20,600 miles on it, and it now reads 22,897. Definitely enjoying the High/Low range selector on 5 gears. I put it in low in town or when I'm hitting twisty or mountainous roads, and high range for stretching its legs on the highways. The transition from cars wasn't too bad since I only drive manuals, 3 different Toyotas. Wet clutches are an interesting concept in terms of low end speed control.

You're telling me, while it would be more comfortable I don't even want to put a windshield on it again. I love it to death as-is. If I had to go that route, I don't want to wire anything on. It's a totally analogue gauge with a little light bulb that just pops out the back. Very simple.

I do for the most part but I guess my visceral reaction lately is just due to fatigue. Similar to how now it seems like 90% of all cars you see are some sort of crossover SUV that will never see dirt or snow and the owner could very easily replace it with a simple family sedan without any real impact to their daily logistics of getting around.

There’s multiple other problems as well, for instance pedestrian safety regulations which demand distance between engine and hood which skews the proportions to want big wheels and if you have big wheels you might as well lean into it with off road styling.
Plus its an arms race of being able to actually see things in traffic as well, you get higher to see over traffic that all gets higher so you get higher so naturally the motorcycles get higher too
If you ride a cruiser these days - and I think this is a not insubstantial reason cruisers sales have so cooled - you feel like you’re practically underneath these new SUVs

study up on it before you go in, you're gonna want some specialty tools (not *need* necessarily) and a way to lift the front end without using a traditional stand. See: hanging from ladders ceilings or like the setup I used in my previous post with a metal bar running through the frame (bad idea, probably don't do that)

Update:

After seeing that you have to pry the crimp up, I manned up and got the gauge apart without breaking anything. After 42 years all the grease in the gauge had melted and settled in the bottom of the housing, but had drained out and left metal flake residue. It looks clean in the photo but everything was covered in metal dust flakes which I cleaned up with Q-tips and a special solvent cleaner that I kept away from the odometer numbers. You can still see it on the jack screw for both odometers.

Thank you to >>28501165 for the website; I'm going to look into getting it refurbished. It's just worn out, and there's no easy way to get in there to lubricate everything without prying it apart (just the cover) every time. In the meantime I need to find a temporary gauge that's around 3.5 inches across or just under 9cm.

>>28501462
Last week or so I was coming back from a nearby logging town on a two-lane road that follows a river with hairpins and hills all over the place (follows the hillside). Three sport bikes came up behind me and settled in, and I set a little quicker pace for the rest of the trip. They stayed tucked in behind me staggered. When we got to an uphill section with passing lane, I waved them by knowing they'd go flying by, so I decided to see if I could keep up with them. I dropped it into low and downshifted, and while they did go by it wasn't as quick as they had planned. If they had all the road in the world and no cops, they probably would've disappeared into the distance. I did manage to keep up with them into the next town. I had to stop and get gas though.

Other than that I usually ride pretty relaxed since I don't want to get killed or trash the bike. My cornering has gotten pretty good though, I've got about a finger's width of chicken strips on either side of my tire, and I managed to lightly scuff the ball of my right foot on a descending hairpin turn the same day the gauge had a stroke.

Wrenching on it on the parking pad while listening to 80s music is pure kino. The floor jack in picrel is under a frame crossbar btw.

I've had to do so much solo work, but the guys at the local Honda dealership think it's cool so they offer me technical advice knowing that I try to get some of my parts there. When I started out my brother and my dad had been messing around with it and had installed a battery with reversed terminals. Thankfully the 30A main fuse burnt and saved the electrical system though.

For whatever reason they don't really want to work on it even though it's simpler, but I don't mind saving on the labor. I've had some help from my dad who would stop by every so often too. I've had to replace the fuel cock since my dad left it with a tank full of ethanol gas that ate a 2" brass main/reserve pipe down to under an inch. There's a site called Vintage CB750 that I got a brand new replica one from since it's the same valve. The fork seals were leaking so I replaced those and of course put fresh fork oil in, and the tank had to be de-rusted as best I could manage. I'm not putting a tank liner in it since if you have to put ethanol in every once in a while it will dissolve products like Kreem and clog the carbs and jets. I just keep it topped with ethanol-free supreme and treat it to part of a bottle of Seafoam from time to time.

Fresh plugs, fresh engine oil, fresh transfer case oil, and rear drive oil. Grease in the driveline. Despite what my brother told me about the brakes being better sealed than a car, the brake fluid looked like a debris-filled river in India. I had to put my full weight on the rear brake pedal and jump up and down on it to get the system to pop free and bleed, and even then I wound up having to rebuild the calipers in order for the new shoes to not drag. I've never felt like the bike was going to let me down though, as long as I did the maintenance. For the most part it seems pretty happy.

I also have a plug in mic inside my helmet. It cuts down on the wind noise significantly and is definitely needed if you're going to be doing any talking.
I still use my hero 3 silver that's 11 years old. Even if will 1080p which is still good enough by today's standards. A hero 5 is plenty good enough for doing what you're doing. You don't need 4k. I still record in 720, though, for file size and the nostalgia effect.

Really though I just want one because I want to go places outside my local area and need a bike with a bigger tank and the ability to keep up with highway traffic (which means 80+ in my region) but I still want to be able to check out cool gravel and dirt roads etc. when I get there.

As for Shoomers, he clearly has an interest in the dual sport thing but was also talking about a sport tourer, and an ADV is basically a mashup of the two.

I'd argue that dual sports are the meme, not ADV bikes. Dedicated dirt bikes MOG dual sports brutally off-road. Why would you drive FAR away to hit some trails on the same vehicle you're returning on? Most of which are barely highway capable. How does that make sense. Get a dirt bike and a truck.

ADV bike can go anywhere, take any road. Yeah it's pigfat and should be limited to 'easy' offroading. But it has an actual purpose. Dual sport is just a bike that is shit at everything.
Anonymous No.28502240 [Report] >>28502244

I think dualsport is like the weekend version and adv is the weeklong version.
You can certainly do a lot more on a dualsport than even the most capable adv. And a true dualsport should be a tire/wheel swap away from a slightly heavier dirt bike

I'm not talking aftermarket, I am talking about OEM. An all in 1 muffler+catalyst is significantly more favored in singles for the weight, cost and sound mainly but they give low back pressure for what it is. The biggest issue is the size if them and they sound horrible.
Anonymous No.28502258 [Report] >>28502265 >>28502347
>>28502244
If someone is driving with spare tires to change to when they get to the trail I sincerely respect the hustle.
But I think dual sport vs adv is more a function of “how close do you live to the trails.”
If I only need to spend ten to fifteen minutes on the highway to get to a variety of good trails, maybe I live in the deep suburbs in the west of the country, then that’s easy to put up with on a dual sport. On the other hand if I live in the New York metro and I’m driving two hours or more just to get to where I can legally off road, then an adv would suit me better.
Anonymous No.28502265 [Report]

I like having a dual sport and an adv bike. The off road trail network in my area is not good and there are very few legal places to ride a dirt bike but tons of dirt roads and class vi roads where plated bikes are legal. My WR250R is great for exploring local colonial farm roads that are overgrown rock gardens and my T7 is great for longer trips all over New England and beyond. There’s like one dirt bike riding place within an hour of me and most of the places up north ban trail bikes and allow ATVs only which is beyond gay.

Often times, it's dirt roads here with county maintenance, i.e. it washed out last week and who knows if it's mud, gravel, or hard pack. Hopefully all three. A T7 or a Transalp is overkill for that, both in cost and in weight if I over estimate my ability on a sandy curve and lowside, plus it's going to make the fairings look like shit.

Maybe in a few more years when I'm better at going fast over gravel and I'm sick of a 300lbs bike on the highway, I'll upgrade to a Taureg or something.

I hate future looking exhausts, they are huge looking without purpose mechanically which makes them even more annoying.

go get your tomboy!

Anons i will do my first big trip with beta next month: back to the motherland! pray for my ass because i have to do at least 5/600km in a day so that i can reach the alps and good mountain passes on the start of the second day and start the fun without wasting too much time.
aside from rain gear that i seriously hope i won't need what should i bring? plan is small backpack and camera only (for when i reach the good part at the end of switzerland/when i'll be in italy). i currently only have a 10l bag and my back will carry the camera gear but i will certantly be by in my old home before evening of second day so no need for much desu.

If only. We could still have cool bikes like R1, Busa, R6 and if we go older, xrv750, rc51, Imagine all the two strokes we could have. I'd be riding a 120-130 kg, ADV bike that makes over a 100hp, under 10k USD that too. From Yamaha or Suzuki. You know it would be glorious, but we live in a gay world and it'll never happen.

Tyre plug kit, and air pump, zip ties, duct tape, a knife, lots of fresh socks, fresh undies, lots of water, something to eat? I used to take a small pack of tools, so that if you have space.

Can't think of anything else. Post pics on the way anon, otherwise animus won't love you back.

Goodluck anon, having done those several times 300-2200km prior to this stop and go trip requiring several parts departments and might as well have brouught the trugg core type riding, i can say this
Pack light
Bring at least 4-6L water and snacc
Pack toilet paper and whatever sanitizer thing for your poopyfingers
You will shit in the woods
You will did a hole
You will cover said hole and droppings and tissues

Lube your shit
Pack at least 10 wrenches of oddball sizes and very very heavy
>dont actually do this but have whats necessary for little loosening, never know
Panniers/rear rqck and a set of straps to free up your backpack can be nice since youre running a light load

Insurance jannoid is also the reason my premo went up, deductible 2500 FUCKING syrup tokens, and i got my molested bike back and proceeded to molest her chains and abuse her so much because she cheated on me with two crackheads
Now i thoroughly gave her the trailerpark beatdown experience™, we are just waiting for the next chapter when i get her towed inside of buddies minivan and buy another bike because we actually dumped her corpse over the cliff and insurance jannoids can kiss my REDNECK™ butthole

wow what is this, the future? i'd need spoons, wrenches and a stand to remove the wheel and patch a tube if that happens to me!
(not) jokes aside a small toolkit could be good to prepare, a big water bottle was in the plans but desu i can only do about 200km before needing to refouel if i don't want to start to gamble with my reserve so i can just get water and a sandwitch on the way down, i was gonna take pauses anyway.

>>28502614
Shoom to be fair it's nothing really adventorous as you guys do, it will be 99% french highway to try reach lower switzerland at a reasonable time and find a room to sleep/a place to eat and then the morning after meet up with adv dad and his klr on the alps where we will take the long way home doing the fun bits of northern italy but the most i did was 4 hours/ 180km of small roads loops around here where i never packed anything so better to ask the actual experienced people.
I have straps for my small tail bag but i don't mind getting a bigger one if really needed, i'd prefer to keep the camera on me because it's an old thumper and while my camera is also old as shit i woul'd like it getting fucked by vibrations, it's not that heavy and i have a really small and nicely strapped messenger bag for it so it shouldn't be a problem.
I was considering no tools but my mirrors really like to loosen up so a couple of screwdrivers and wrenches are not a big deal, tape and zipties too but as i said before if i get a flat i'm fucked anyway
