I know /o/ is a petrolhead board but humor me for a second. I'm considering getting a used shitbox EV with ~100 miles range to save gas while puttering around town. I've got a real car for highway trips so that's not an issue. Is it worth getting a used Leaf? I can get one for like $4K, but I don't know how long the now-obscelescent Chademo charger stations will stick around.

If not, what used electric car is least likely to put up a fuss, and are there any cheap used EVs with CCS?

Electricity is cheap here, gas is expensive, and a shitbox Leaf would cover 80%+ of my driving, it really wouldn't take that long to pay for itself for me, I wouldn't be asking about minutia like charging port standards if I hasn't already done that math fren

Get a used Bolt. The leaf really was the one of the worst electric cars you could buy in the US. If I remember correctly EA said they are getting rid of all of their chademo chargers so you'll either need an adapter or install a charger at home. There are many reasons why it's so cheap.

either a bolt or maybe a super high mile tesla is a far better option
obviously condition/how the car was treated will be the most important factor

you might be able to find a shitbox spark, but they probably arent old enough to have gotten that cheap yet

Would you be able to live with home charging only? An adapter might be an option later as well.

If you're charging at home or at some dedicated station, then a motorcycle would be cheaper up front, cheaper on fuel, and WAY more fun. If you can bum electricity off of your workplace then sure

Not really.
These faggots have been shilling buying cheap used EVs for a while now. Anyone with a brain in their head knows why used EVs are cheap. They are non repairable white goods with essentially unreplaceable batteries. Once anything fails you are fucked and the range will be even more shit than it was when it was new.

Because the range is shit and they're 10 years old
>They are non repairable white goods with essentially unreplaceable batteries, once anything fails you are fucked
You aren't engine swapping a $5000 gas car either unless you're doing it as a hobby, you just accept the worn out bores and reduced power
>and the range will be even more shit than it was when it was new
Which is fine for a second car for in-city use

You're just looking for something to be mad about

Leaf is so old with shitty range. Maybe consider Renault Zoe (with a bought battery), Gen 2 Leaf, BMW i3, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Soul and Peugot 208

All these cost way more but should have modern charging and interiors.

>100 miles range
The actual range will always be much less than the overly optimistic estimate. You'll have about 60 miles at best, and you must leave enough to drive home, so 50 miles is all you've got.
Don't forget to turn off the AC; it will reduce your range. If the weather is not perfect, your range will decrease by half. Temperatures that are too hot or too cold are not acceptable.
All in all, I'd say you've got about 30–40 miles to work with.

1st gen Leaf is only worth it if a) you can find a second series 1st gen (the very first series has some issues); b) you get it for super-retard cheap (like $1500); c) you manage to find a relatively fresh 40 kWh salvage battery to replace the original clapped out pack (the 62 kWh pack isn't recommended, because it's giganigga heavy and you'll have to upgrade the suspension, meaning more money).

Would go with Renault Zoe or VW up depends where you live.
1st gen Leaf is ok if you have garage so that battery doesn't get too hot.
People here shitting on them but I used one for couple of months and nothing wrong with it. It even pulls decently, ain't no Tesla but will outjump older 6 cyl bmw's and cars like that.

It actually has 180 miles of range because you can run either the 2banger motor (80 mile range on premium gas) it has OR the EV motor. (100 mile range when charged)
This is very useful because if you run into an emergency and need to just go on gas, you can. (the motor doesn't drive the car, it charges the battery for the EV)

One of the best 2nd hand buys, especially the (admittedly rare) rEX 120 Ah version, which combines the booster engine with the largest available battery.
There's even an i3S version, but I've read some people saying it's not that good. In exchange for 11 horses and 15 pounds of torques, you get a noticeably worse suspension, and somewhat shorter range.
Also, it's one of the cars which can never phone home, so your privacy is assured. BMW deactivated telemetry in the US, due to 3G phase-out.

It'll likely only have a range of 20-25 miles, unironically. Get an i3 with a range extender for under $10k like >>28504160 if you're hell-bent on a runabout EV that'll actually make it home from a grocery run.
Otherwise, if you actually want to save money drop $1500-2500 on a 2nd-gen Prius, instead. It'll take years of driving one to add up to the savings on a ~$10k Leaf or i3, and you'll actually have something that can run purely off guzzoline when the need arises (it will).

Only if it exists in supply in your area.
The same is true of the Renault Zoe and the Mitsubishi iMiev or the Kia eNIRO.

The point of buying the LEAF, is that they made later models with the same battery cradle, meaning upgrade is technically feasible.
