Ford GT is probably the only car I'm nostalgic for in that era. FD RX-7 and 993 911 Turbo would be runners up I guess.

I'm not sure about 4th gens but I have a 2004 Pontiac GTO and the handling is decent. Is their suspension similar or not really? A lot better than my 2003 Mustang was.

It wasn't from a performance standpoint, but a build quality standpoint. You could now have a car that looked like a Ferrari but wasn't nearly as temperamental. You have to keep in mind the 348 was still a thing with the NSX launched and the NSX was FAR more refined in daily driving scenarios. Hence why you see 400k+ mile NSXs and 348s are mostly weekend toys.
