GM tried to sell the Opel Insignia wagon here in America but they had to add retarded plastic shit and put an "X" in the name to make it seem more "rugged" and "outdoorsy" because aging pretentious gen Xers wouldn't buy it otherwise.

It still failed because half the population is obese and physically can't climb their way out of a station wagon. Maybe soillennials would have bought it but nobody under 50 can afford a new car.

You just know they were going for that "camping gear" image though, because to an American a car can't just be practical, it's gotta look like it can do cool stuff, like drive through a mud puddle. Hence the Subaru copycat body cladding.

>I bought an outback because itโ€™s the only new non luxury wagon you can still get, and now itโ€™s gone and turned into a gay SUV
This is genuinely baffling to me. Wasn't the Outback selling pretty well already? Why does the world need yet another bloated shit bucket?

>Wasn't the Outback selling pretty well already? Why does the world need yet another bloated shit bucket?
It was Legacy-based, which is entirely the problem. With disappointing sales of the last-gen Legacy, which had already been dropped from markets like Australia and Japan, it's now been discontinued with 2025 being it's last model year.
This gives them the advantage of "broadening the appeal" (their words) of the Outback since they're no longer constrained with sharing proportions and a platform with a sedan. Of course, that means making it look more boxy and SUV-like since you've now got boxy competitors like the Honda Passport and Hyundai Santa Fe to go up against, and of course they have to lean into the outdoorsy image since that's the style of the current time.
That doesn't mean that all this is dumb as hell however. Once upon a time you could even get a "Legacy Outback" in sedan form, of all things.

Unpainted plastic is more utilitarian, but they decided to paint the lowest part of the front bumper for some retarded reason. And in Euro version it's black.
Won't buy it though, one transverse car on the older version of the platform is enough for me. PITA to wrench on, everything is retarded.

Little to no damage to metal body parts and paint after minor contacts, usually little visible permanent damage to plastic too. I know that because I owned an Avalanche. For a car like pictured it means worrying a bit less while going over some obstacles.
Idk about fender flares though, maybe they catch more dirt and gravel if they are wider. They don't usually fare too well in typical collisions involving them.

Plastic cladding just gives salt and moisture a place to hide and rust out your wheel arches and rocker panels. Every Avalanch I've seen in the past 10 years was a rust bucket.

They do rust, but not under the cladding, at least not initially. Mine had it in the wheel wells and in the rear corners of the rear door sill, both places typical for all GMT800.

Well first of all you're an absolute retard if you drive into any body of water with your car, even if it has a snorkel. The only reason you should ever do it is if you absolutely have to, as in it's the only route (ie: overlanding, off road, only road out of town and you refuse to wait, etc).

Even if you think your car is high enough off the ground to clear it you still are putting a lot of other components at risk of damage, and premature rusting.

When you get a little autistic into maintenance, you start to hate the idea of submerging the undercarriage or wheels unless it's built up against it. Even on a car from the 90s, for example my Toyota, some things are just protected by grease-slicked oil/dust seals. There are the wheel bearings which, no matter how well built they are can let water in, CV boots, and the most common thing is the driveline. This obviously doesn't include all the non-lubable suspension parts like solid axles, wishbones, knuckles, etc. Every so often I hit the grease nipples on the driveline and read through the recommendations toward vehicle maintenance, and you want to hit those far more often if you're driving in deep water or mud.

Oh yeah and now that I think about it, differential cases are ventilated. Why the fuck would you want that in the diff oil? Like after trying to maintain my vehicles I legitimately think people who go mudding are retarded. I don't like street queens either, but maintain your vehicle(s) and don't just bury your car in liquid shit.

Bleh you lack autism just put your car in a protective bubble and chuck a bunch of moisture absorbers in and wait a few days. Peel off the plastic bubble that has suctioned completely to the car at that point and enjoy your dry car with ruined paint. EZ
