He got into contact with world famous racing driver Randy Pobst, and asked him what was the best handling car he could possibly buy. Randy, (who is far beyond the league of anyone featured in Initial D and any other journalist driver at Hot Version), told Takumi that the Camaro was a top secret engineering project done under the nose of GM. these engineers would develop a platform with the performance of a super car that handles better than any Porsche, Lotus, and especially any small japanese car, while being more durable than the japanese cars and way cheaper than the european equivalent. He told takumi that GM didn't know they were selling a super car for just 45-60k at the mid range, and a super entry level sports car at the 20k range. once GM launched an investigation into the project, they proceeded to jack the price up, but it was too late. so they hastily cancelled it.

Takumi was incredibly impressed by the car. "only 4 cylinders? i thought american cars needed big engines..." he was impressed that it was so much better than any of the japanese 4 cylinder cars. Randy proceeded to tell him that Japanese manufacturers even benchmark the Camaro so they could improve their own 4 cylinder sports cars. Takumi wondered why they didn't sell such an amazing car in Japan. its everything Japanese car enthusiast want, and it doesn't blow up like toyota's GR Yaris or GR86. Randy would let Takumi drive his Camaro Turbo 1LE. Takumi was immediately blown away. it drove way better than any of the japanese cars he'd ever driven. he was scared that american driving dynamics had leap frogged so far head of Japan. he would later import his own Camaro Turbo 1LE. he had the signature Tofu delivery livery on it. he drove it to his old man's house. his dad looked at it "what the hell is this?". takumi got out with an 80s porno Mustache. took off his aviators and said: "the best handling car Japan has ever seen..."

He did.
But a big crash took him out the sport.
He then becomes an instructor in Europe.

I have a feeling once he signed to a rally team he just stopped driving on the streets. Takumi is stubborn so once he has no more "reason" to do something he won't do it anymore.

Daily reminder Probst is a wrenchlet left leaning boomer who only cares about cheap maintenance and sticker fuel economy. GM offered him a free car and he took a 4cyl Camaro because of those reasons lmao.

oops, wrong pic. lucky dubs confirm GM must've also given the owners of Willow Springs and Hockenheim a free camaro, too. and they choose it to be faster on all seasons than the miata for that reason.

Camaros were sold in Japan but they didn't get the LGX, only 2.0t LTG and 6.2 LT1. The trims were also much simpler, just LT-RS and SS. I don't think the 1LE was offered in Japan but I have seen a video of one there.

Its funny to think how there are JDM Camaros and Corvettes and how the 2024 Camaro got an even more limited special edition than the US had.

its pretty embarrassing that they get the weakest performance out of any non-japanese car they test, and you can see them fucking up shifts and braking early in things like GT2 RS 911s, or allowing a NSX to finish within a second of an F40.

Pobst wouldn't make these mistakes.

Canonically he used his dad's Impreza after the 86 engine blows up. In the anime only he keeps the 86, but never races in it again.
Since he started doing rally soon after the end of the manga, he probably got a Lancer, a Celica, or his own Impreza pretty quickly and moved on.

jdm us make cars have extra stuff like quarter panel blinkers and fender extensions as well as less emissions crap, it's like euro spec but better
buddy of mine had a jdm sn95 v6 vert and it had some funky factory stuff the us model didn't like cobra mirrors and fender flares, because in japan your wheels cannot stick out of the dimensions of the body at all. big thing was no evap system and a less restrictive exhaust. was still slow as shit and lhd however.
