Why is Toyota so successful? Especially in the west.

They care about making sure their cars are dependable. That's how they make billionaires. People trust them. There's a thing where people call it the toyota tax. Any toyota car will cost 1000 or more than a similar car just bc people know they are more dependable. Also, they make sure their suppliers make really good parts unlike Ford or Chrysler.

Good car reliability without charging ridiculous amounts of money for it is major selling point. Thats what Toyota has been for decades. In europoo countries Toyota doesnt sell their worst reliability 2.4l turbo I4, 3.4l twinturbo V6(hybrid) engines with their cars. Also most of Toyota cars are simple to drive.

In areas where living costs are high- or the outdoors are more dangerous car drivers do care more about car long term reliability than higher performance and driving fun.

They literally funded gorilla warfare across Africa and the Middle East with their trucks. To the point that governments had to step in and make laws as to where Toyota trucks could be exported to.

LEAN manufacturing anon.
Other brands scrambled to copy the Toyota way in the 90s-
But they can't manage to get past 75% of it.

I've worked with Toyota "LEAN masters" and fuck are those old Japanese dudes good.
Their ideas for efficiency sound crazy but they work.
The biggest hurdle is just getting baby boomers to listen to them.
The "we've always done it this way" arguments are common.

Brand power. And they're not especailly successful in the west. They're carried by Asian sales. In Europe, Toyota hasn't been that popular for a long time. Their cars are too ugly and alien.

Platform & Design

Both trucks share some Toyota truck DNA, but:

The Tacoma is heavier, has a more refined interior, and is designed for on-road comfort with off-road capability.

The Hilux is generally simpler, lighter, and engineered for durability and reliability in extreme, rugged environments.

Engines & Performance

Tacoma (North America):

Engines: 2.7L I4 or 3.5L V6 (gasoline).

Prioritizes power and comfort, especially for the U.S. market.

Automatic and manual options available.

Hilux (Global markets):

Engines: Smaller displacement diesels (e.g., 2.4L or 2.8L turbo diesel), and some gasoline options.

Better fuel economy and torque for off-road and utility work.

Designed for tough, work-oriented use — widely used in mining, farming, and military sectors.

Ride & Handling

Tacoma:

More SUV-like ride, especially in TRD trims (Off-Road or Pro).

Tuned for comfort on American highways and urban environments.

Hilux:

More utilitarian; suspension prioritizes durability over ride comfort.

Rougher ride but superior reliability in harsh conditions.

TL;DR:

Tacoma is the stylish, comfort-focused North American cousin.

Hilux is the rugged, go-anywhere workhorse for the rest of the world.

Japan Inc. subsidized them more so that they could use better quality parts while still being able to match or undercut the competition. You'll notice that as the subsidies dropped off after the 90's so did the quality.

I have a 2013 ES350 that has never left me stranded anywhere, other than that one time I forgot to change the original battery that came with the car after 176k miles, which they replaced for me for free. I have never had to take it to a mechanic because something failed.

It's 202k miles now, I'll buy new coils/shock absorbers next month and keep driving it to work for another 202k miles.

Brake pads are less than $100 and 30 minutes per axle.
You've got to do better at proving reliability than not changing brake pads as often.

My 2018 Camry LE I discovered as a J vin code. Apparently it was part of the very first batch that was the only one not made in the US. Do you think it's slightly more reliable? I like to imagine the Japanese workers at Toyota's flagship factory put a little extra care into it, especially because it was the first batch.

The big 3 were making fine cars at the time. Even chrysler, the perpetual bankruptcy machine, made a 24/36 mpg compact in the 70's from their duster model.
Comfortable, repairable, generally reliable (at least in design), large, and cheap.
The only problem was quality control.
...
So, of course, each and every one of the big 3 sat down and asked themselves: Why are jap cars so successful?
>is it the fuel economy?
>the reliable quality control?
>the hip (tm) and alt (tm) styling?
NO! It's being small, shitty, and having a god awful interior! And even lower quality control!
And that's how the American car companies lost their edge. Only chrysler managed to build passable jap-style cars in the form of the k platform, and only after a complete 180 degree overhaul. And they were still shitty.

Their cars are designed to break within 8 years instead of 4 years and dumb corn syrup sippers think this is some great feat. Seriously they will have a 7 year old Toyota and slap it saying "yup she's still running smooth" like bro it's only 7 years old...
