AWD vs RWD - What's the consensus?
If you live somewhere with actual seasons and changing weather conditions, which is better?

Once you go AWD you will never go back.

If you have to ask... go AWD or FWD, get a set of used beater wheels with snow tires for the winter.
AWD only helps when you're on the throttle (starting from a stop or using throttle in corners) and won't make your car invincible to snow, but RWD can get you in trouble if you push it.

Yes, absolutely. Snow tires make a huge difference.
A real AWD with 3 LSDs on all-seasons might be better at it than open diff RWD with blizzaks however.

Was it front wheel drive based or rear wheel drive based AWD?

Or was it a true 50-50 split?

Open diff AWD sends torque to one wheel.
Real AWD with a full set of LSDs (think STi, not WRX) sends it to all four, all the time.
It's a bigger difference than you might expect, and probably equivalent to snow tires, I only have personal experience to go on, I'd love to see tests done (but AWD systems vary by a lot). You could also put snow tires on a 3-lsd awd if you wanted.

Choose wisely.
If you want something that performs well all year and won't leave you stranded in your driveway when an overnight snowfall rolls through, the DWS06+ has been king for years. Defender LTX M/S2 and PSAS4 are also good.

If you live in an area where months of heavy snowfall are a annual occurrence and want something that can deal with that and also have the durability to be driven the rest of the year without replacement too, then AllSeasonContact 2, CrossClimate 2/3 Sport, Seasonproof 2, are all options.

AWD is better than RWD in winter times. But the difference on better traction, better driving speeds and less slip and slide only shows up with proper winter tires. So if you put summer tires or all season tires on AWD, then put good winter RWD then RWD wins. Correct type of tires for the each different weather conditions are the most important for better traction.
Wrong tires for each weather conditions make traction, handling very poor regardless to what drivetrain car does have.

I live in the snow belt and FWD with snow tires or all-weather tires is good enough like 99% of the time. You arenโ€™t trying to drive around when there is a foot of snow on the ground breaking new trails. Youโ€™re driving in 2-3โ€ of road slush or on packed snow where tire choice is the most relevant factor.

You lose out on slow, easy donuts in the snow which sucks, but most of the time if when your FWD loses traction it keeps the vehicle going straight instead of inducing oversteer.

RWD + LSD and no TC is the most predictable
not retard-proof but 5-10 brain cells are enough to feel and predict exactly if/when it's going to slide the rear and control it.
i will never understand why people are afraid of rwd, it used to be the standard everybody drove without issue and I learned with RWD, actually have never driven FWD
if you drive like a normie it doesn't even matter, it won't slide
