Trucker thread
I finished my day with about 30 seconds left on my clock when I finally had it in the hole and my brakes pulled in neutral. Cut it way tf too close.

1) I’ve been told my ELD will switch me to Drive status if I go over 5 mph, so Yard Move is pointless. I’ll try it out on my next opportunity… once I get a new tandem tire.
2) I typically go whatever speed limit is for the yard.

IME, companies differ in how they implement Yard Move. Company I'm with currently has their system set up such that any movement at all will bump you to the Drive line unless you're in YM in which case you can go up to 25 kph before you get put onto Drive.

How often do truck tires blow out? I always see blown out tires on the side of the interstate but never a car pulled over or abandoned there so I assume it's from big rigs.
Anonymous No.28522890 [Report]
>>28522843
Blowouts are common on big rigs because the tires are under a lot of pressure, since they’re filled to 90-110 psi and are usually under a lot of weight from the freight being carried. So any tire damage that isn’t caught during a pre-trip inspection or happens on the road will result in a blowout.
Most blowouts should be noticeable to an attentive driver and a responsible driver will pull over immediately in a safe manner; those who don’t notice the blowout and/or continue driving will cause the blown tire(s) to disintegrate even further, creating more hazards on the road.

I think your company is lying to you, have you ever tried using yard move? You can do it at the end of a 10 reset and it will be inconsequential if it doesn't work.
>>28522843
Blowouts happen less often than recaps falling off. Anytime you see a flat piece of tread laying on the road it came unglued and got left behind, but if its shredded yea the fucker blowed up

I'm going to be super contrarian and state that I don't like long nose Peterbilts. I work on a farm that has a handful of them. They are mostly pre def trucks. Boss man decided to try Kenworth for me. My absolute favorite part of it is the Jake brake. It's a big lever on the steering column opposite the turn signal lever. No searching through a dozen switches on the dash.

I find PACCAR differences generally benign in that they're different but not usually better/worse just different. Volvo/Mack otoh is another story. Basically a Mack is Volvo they ruined to be different with dumb shit like control stalks made such that you have to reach around behind the steering wheel to use them, windshield washer nozzles that spray top and bottom but miss the middle, (but at least it hits the windshield instead of just being pumped over the side like a PACCAR does), and so on.

I really dont like the button shifters, at least on frieghtliners the shifter is on the steering column, the buttons feel like negative ergonomics

Oh yeah. That. Apparently they thought their I-shift was so superior that you'd never have to to anything but put it in Drive. I mean, who would ever need to hold a gear or do a manual up or down shift while hitting bumps? At least Mack did get that one right by moving the panel to the top of the dash instead of the bottom. Apparently there's a lever type shifter that goes on the side of the seat to facilitate manual selection but no accountant has ever optioned a fleet truck with one.

They're not even good buttons neither, they got that squish to em like a cheap calculator, half the time I cant even trust that the press went through the system or I have to look down at the panel cause none of em have any kind of grooving to tell you without looking what button you're touchin

I don't have yard move on my ELD as a status I can select. I also can't do personal conveyance. All I can do is creep under 6mph in off duty if I'm totally fucked which I had to do today to finish creeping into a parking spot and not be illegal. Also got a bitchy email from logs because I didn't have time to log a post-trip inspection.

I pushed literally as hard as I could today.

I have figured out they're a shit company already but they're a mega and this is my first year so I expected plenty of growing pains and bullshit getting into it. I learned today their dispatch office is full of the most incompetent goddamn retards imaginable from the top to the bottom and I'll have to treat them as such moving forward if I want to be successful. They have literally wasted so much of my time this week that I barely managed 2000 miles when if I had been able to actually fucking drive for all the time I had to spend waiting on them or compensating for them being retarded I could've had 2500-2700 instead.

The driving and even the backing really isn't that hard, nor is navigating and trip planning. But dealing with dispatch is going to drive me to drink. They're all just as green as I am which doesn't speak well to employee retention for this company, and if this keeps up I'm leaving the second my contract is up for greener pastures. And all this for not even forty cents a mile.

For me, it's the piss bucket. I keep a five gallon bucket in the truck to piss in (or shit if necessary although that hasn't happened yet) and at any given time I have anywhere between one and three gallons of piss ready to be dumped on somebody. Normally I dump it in the grass if I'm somewhere nice, but if the clerks in the store are a bunch of rude uppity 'iggers or 'pics I'll dump that shit right out the drivers door in the parking lot before I pull off early in the morning.

I never understood why some truckers leave their hazards on while they’re inside the traffic jam. You usually turn them on as you’re approaching slowed/stopped traffic, to warn the traffic behind you, and turn it off once everyone around you has stopped or slowed down.

So, the logic with the interstate system is, North-South freeways are odd-numbered and East-West freeways are even numbered, while bypasses (starting with an even number) and terminating branch-offs (starting with an odd number) are triple numbered corresponding to one of the interstates.
The number for each interstate goes to a higher number as the farther north and east you go – I-5 being the westernmost N-S interstate and I-95 being the easternmost N-S interstate; I-10 being the southernmost E-W interstate and I-90 being the northernmost E-W interstate.

With that logic in mind, my question is…
Why in the fuck is I-99 (PA-NY) BEFORE I-95?

Dude, get the fuck outta there, even Swift pays more than that for otr.
Seriously, at most stay like six months then get a dedicated gig somewhere. I'm green as fuck and landed a dedicated gig for $1/mile with $250/day minimum. If I can get that on no experience and a recommendation from my trainer you can get something a lot better than what you've got with a few months and a clean record.
You want to stay with that company to pay off your tuition, but do the math on how much more you could be making, it'll more than make up for having to pay off the company school.

I'm sticking it out for a year to pay off my tuition yeah, and thankfully by the end of it I'll be making about 60cpm but I am not joking my rate right now is 42cpm and that's getting 2200-2800 miles a week in a truck governed at 64mph. They are making a fucking killing off of me. When this year is up I'm applying to a real OTR company and jumping ship the day after my contract is up. They're honestly not terrible for being a starter company other than the pay. It is quite literally the lowest in the industry for a mega carrier. But they only piss test and they gave me a job when all the rest wouldn't so I figure fuck it I'll stick it out for 'em for a year. They let me idle the truck as much as I want and haven't said one word about it and it's new equipment in good condition.

I'm well aware a real company for a driver with experience would be up around the 65-85cpm range for OTR and their trucks could do 75 bare minimum on top of that. Just is what it is getting started, gotta pay my dues.

I still think it's funny that you can't have alcohol in the cab of a cmv unless you're hauling it and it's on the BOL in which case it's totally fine so long as it's not open. As we all know, nobody in the history of trucking has ever enjoyed a cold beer in the sleeper bunk on their 34 and if they did it certainly wasn't while it was idling. Just like all truck drivers never ever smoke weed and you definitely never smell it in the air late at night in the back row of the parking lot at truck stops.

In other news, I made 2600 miles this week as a noob in a 62mph limited truck. Feeling pretty good about it. Theoretically 3000 should be possible but realistically it would require a lot of luck to pull off.

She said "no theres plenty of moonshiners but they only deal within their own, if you want beer it's the next exit 10 miles up" and it basically ruined my weekend cause no way was I doin the 4 1/2mph crawl up the highway

question for truckers. tried searching this on reddit because I was curious, but the responses are massive fags (as expected).

How do you feel about cars drafting behind you? If I find a truck going +5 or +10 the speed limit, I can happily draft them for hours.

No, I don't mean tailgating. It's usually about 3-5 car lengths behind when using adaptive cruise control. It's much safer for me because NPC drivers can see your truck clearly and are more apt to pass both of us instead of just actually tailgating my ass for 5 minutes for no fucking reason. Also the gas mileage is incredible.

I don't do it at night because by then all the NPCs and soccer moms are home, and I can just cruise at +15mph.

>it's even worse now that I'm pulling tanks cause retards still think they're getting some benefit
there is a small mpg benefit, but mainly the advantage is that NPCs see truck and assume it means slow and immediately pass, instead of flying up on my ass and tailgating me on the fucking freeway. This is a regular occurrence because the average person is retarded.

Worst case ontario you fuck up and hit my DOT bumper and tear your car to shit and I get to take an hour long break on the side of the road to talk to the cops and tell them you're dumb before I pull off without a care in the world.

I really don't pay much attention to who is directly behind me unless I'm trying to change lanes. In most states if you rear end somebody it's entirely your fault no matter what they did unless you've got them on video intentionally brake checking you like an asshole multiple times before it happens.

I'll even wait in there for a while to make sure someone doesn't come in right after me so I never get found out. I've had some that wouldn't idle in Phoenix in summer, Minnesota in winter and would shut off in traffic if the stop was long enough. The only thing that would keep them going was an accelerator pedal movement that got the engine above 1000 rpm briefly. And then you'd get an "excessive idle" bitch-gram about a week later and no safety bonus for that quarter

In the 21 the LDW would pause or mute the stereo, so when it ended my audiobook app would automatically rewind 2 seconds and I wouldn't miss anything. In the 25 it doesn't so now I've reduced the manual rewind from 20 seconds to 10 and I have to reach over and rewind every time it freaks out.

is truck driving mostly solitary? like you dont have to interact with anyone? ive realized that most of the problems i have in life come from other people, so i should try and get a job where i am alone most of the time

It is a tradeoff. You interact with less people and the people you do interact with you interact with less often, but the odds of them seriously pissing you the fuck off skyrocket and you have to still somehow manage to be polite and professional when dealing with them or you lose your job. Here's an example - my job owes me about half a grand that I know for a fact they will never, ever pay me. I want to call my dispatch an 'iggerfaggot and tell them I'm going to dispatch them in the parking lot of their office with a baseball bat and a blunt machete, and I want to park my truck next to a cliff and push the brake valves in so it rolls over it while I walk away. I also want to punch every goddamn jigaboo piece of uppity shit I meet at shippers as the gate guards right in the teeth with brass knuckles on, and do the same or worse with about half the people I encounter in shipping and receiving offices. Every single day I want to, on multiple occasions, run idiot four wheelers right off the fucking road and preferably when it ends with them slamming into concrete or steel with their family in the car.

Instead, I take a deep breath and remember that most of them will burn in hell for eternity for being massive pieces of shit, and I just scream at the top of my lungs in the truck several times a day to keep my blood pressure from spiking. It's still better than working retail. If you legitimately hate interacting with people and you can deal with retarded assholes without beating them to death or telling them you want to beat them to death, this just might be the career for you. On the plus side after a couple years the amount of incompetent people you have to interact with goes down significantly but will never actually reach zero. On the plus side once you've got five years experience with a clean record if you're not bringing home six figures or really close to it it's by choice and you don't need a college degree to pull it off.

Don’t believe what the media tells you. There are too many variables involved in truck driving to make full automation possible. What may end up happening is trucks will end up becoming self-driving but someone would still need to be inside the cab for any human intervention that may be needed.

I’ve noticed that truckers who wear relaxed attire (i.e. pajamas, flip-flops) face a not insignificant amount of disdain from other truckers. Let me tell you why I wear whatever makes me comfortable: I earned my CDL earlier this year in the hopes that it would be a career that would allow me to earn an income significant enough to rent a decent apartment and be able to move out of my parents’ house. Since getting my first trucking job however, I make a comparable hourly wage to someone who works in retail, to be away from home 3 weeks at a time, while driving an 80 thousand pound vehicle. This is me making a good starting income of over $.60/mile. A megacarrier offered me .38/mile. These poverty tier wages have been caused by the massive amount of foreigners who have flooded the field.

So yeah, I will wear whatever I damn well please

About 4-6k is the average cost of a month long CDL school but you should know that's an accelerated program. For most people it works out just fine, for some they would really benefit from a proper school that lasts for 2-3 months. If you're really serious you need to start studying your states DMV handbook now and you also need to start doing practice cdl tests for your state. There's about 1200 possible questions they can ask for a Texas cdl which is the one I got and most of them are just strait up rote memorization. Understand that when you leave school you won't actually know anything about performing the job other than the absolute bare necessities to not literally die, kill someone else, or get logbook violations that will fuck you out of a ton of money. You really won't know shit and won't be worth a fuck until you've got at least a couple months experience and really a year, and the day you start getting complacent and half-assing safety is the day you fuck up and ruin your whole career or potentially end up dead or in prison. It's not entirely dissimilar to being in the military, where 95% of the time you're bored and have to keep motivating yourself to do a good job. The other 4% is actually difficult, and the last 1% is sheer pants-shitting terror and rage.

As for automation - I think it'll happen eventually, but it won't be until I'm an old man or dead. AI right now is basically a profoundly stupid parrot with a really good memory. It can't really do much actual abstract thinking and gets easily overwhelmed when you try to actually make it think and not just essentially operate on a bunch of if-then statements. They have self driving trucks now running in Texas and Russia, and they do great on open highway in clear weather conditions, but someone still has to manually drive for the first and last mile portions of the trip and they can't pre or post trip or fuel themselves. Even Microsoft thinks it's unlikely it'll ever be fully automated.

If you already have your permit and you've been studying the handbook and in-cab pretrip you're in pretty good shape. Don't forget the external pretrip either. Personally I check my tires, oil, and hoses every single morning in addition to doing tug tests constantly and triple checking I'm not high hooked and that the locking jaws are secured every time I connect to a trailer and whenever I come off a 34 I do a thorough pretrip that takes about 30-45 minutes. Safety is key in this job.

All that said I've seen some real fucking retards get a cdl so the fact that you care and are studying means you'll be just fine. Backing takes time and experience to really learn, I highly recommend getting the My Trucking Skills app on your phone and practicing with it as much as you can. It won't replace actual backing experience and it isn't perfect because you can't slide your tandems in the app like you'll have to deal with in real life but for learning theory and angles it's a huge help. I'd start with the angle dock with a 53 foot trailer until you can nail it in like two minutes or less, then go from there. It'll help you practice your 45 degree alley dock which you really need to be able to nail as you'll be doing it all the fuckin time especially in truck stops where you have to be quick about it and if you fuck up and hit something it's a big damn deal.

I ended up going to a one-month school and owing $7.5k (employer is reimbursing $220/month) and felt like it was adequate enough to get me prepared for commercial driving, but they only teach you the very basics – just enough to allow you to pass the on-site CDL test.

I’ve been with them for 4 months and currently making 40 cpm as a solo driver.
Dispatch would only bitch at me if I’m not going at a pace they don’t agree with, and since I don’t bullshit before getting on or being on duty, this is rarely a problem – there’s only one instance when dispatch had an issue with me going into sleeper mode because I was 3 hours away from the con and I had 3 hours remaining on my time – since they wanted to get the load delivered that night and the driver who received the load split did not meet me to pick the load up, the load ended up getting delivered much later than it would have if they had just shut the fuck up about me starting my reset. At several points cops were following me ready to pull me over if I didn't make a certain turn to stay on the truck route. No way I would've made it during the day with traffic going on. It was a solid hour and some change of some of the tightest turns you could get a 53' trailer through especially in a sleeper cab. Thank Christ I wasn't loaded heavy. Then when I finally made it through to the first truck stop after that shit I had like 10 minutes left on my clock and the parking lot was full so I had to sit in the fuel lane for a good two hours before a spot finally opened up at about 430am.

I'm just happy I get to take my 34 today. But yeah, never ever fucking take 321 or 421 through the Appalachian mountains in a semi. 91 was a little bit better but still sketchy at times. Anyone doing that shit better be getting paid a dollar a mile or better.

In the moment it was scary as fuck but looking back on it it was a lot of fun. Be warned, if you fuck up and get stuck you likely won't have cell service so you better have a CB to let the bears know so they can come help and warn motorists. >C.R. England
In 2011, C.R. England was the first carrier I considered, to start my career as a truck driver, but I soon learned about how shitty they were and decided not to go forward with them.

In 2015, I considered going with Roehl but eventually got cold feet from having to travel to Gary, Indiana with no money saved up, so I backed out of that plan.

I tried, once again, by applying at a local truck driving school, in 2021, and paid for the tuition upfront – I ended up having to back out from that, as well, as I had discovered the deteriorating vision in my right eye (which started in 2017) kept me from passing the physical.

I used the tuition money to pay for an eye specialist to diagnose my eye condition – corneal keratoconus – and perform an operation on my cornea to prevent/reduce further distortion. After it’s been confirmed that the keratoconus has been stabilized, I was able to get a vision exemption form filled out for my physical and I was finally able to go to a (different) truck driving school and start my truck driving career, this year.

So, instead of starting my trucking career in my early 20s, in ended up starting it in my mid 30s. It was probably for the best, considering how cocky I was at driving, when I was younger.

All the megas suck ass they just all suck in different ways. With mine it's the dispatchers, particularly the weekend dispatchers. They'll waste a ton of your time and not even give a single fuck. And good luck getting reimbursed for any goddamn thing even if it absolutely should be reimbursed. At the very least they're not total 'igger shitbirds about maintenance and repairs even if they will fuck you out of as much maintenance layover pay as possible.

I'm doing my year, scalding their ears on the exit interview, and getting the fuck out. They asked me to be a mentor after not even a full month of experience. I'm honestly amazed they're even still in business.

Yeah I wouldn't have a problem hauling diesel but I wouldn't haul gas for less than 200k a year after taxes and there's nobody that would pay me that much to do it so I'm just never gonna do it. Might as well be hauling dynamite. Only thing worse than gas that I can think of would be propane or some of the more caustic and dangerous chemicals. Hazmat - real, actual, you will fucking die horribly if you crash hazmat - doesn't pay nearly enough for what it is. Like yeah you can die just hauling an empty dryvan but you have to actually try to make it happen or get wildly unlucky and there's pretty good odds you don't die or get maimed even in a bad crash. Gas or propane tankers have BLEVE'd from pretty mild collisions with morons and turdies. Just ain't worth it imhfo. I'd sooner team drive with an Indian or flease a truck.
