br/o/s, I just bought my first automatic car and I fuckimg hate it
>its unpreductable-it shifts on its own and you just feel out of sync
>its fucking dumb. the shifts take milliseconds but it thinks for solido 2 second every time it makes a shift. need to make a quick pass? yeah, fuck you, just sit there and wait for your dumbass tranny to give you the right gear.
>manual mode is awful too. I thought it would be like a sequential gearbox but no, it thinks before shifting too, sometimes denying shifts too
>tge kack if engine breaking is crappy too
tldr: fuck automatics

Some autos you really can't even feel them shifting, my aurion was like that.
The hiluxes I drive at work are horrible though, every shift is jerky as fuck.

This is why I hate autos
>waiting on a hill at a T intersection on a busy road, to turn
>wait more than 1 minute for a gap
>small gap appears ahead, get ready for it, it's my only chance
>gap almost upon me, floor it to overcome the hill just in time to slip into the gap
>car: "oh, you want to move?"
>"are you sure you want to move?"
>foot still flat to the floor,
>"ok, he DOES want to move"
>car starts moving
>too late, gap is gone, can't go now

Some VW Group DCTs I've driven hesitate like that.
It's like they're trying to keep the RPMs as low as possible, so they won't give you any power until you floor it, at which point it finally cooperates and the car suddenly charges forward almost dangerously. Those things can react very fast if they actually want to, but the jank ass delay and hesitation (plus a bit of turbo lag on top) make them unpredictable.

I suppose they do that to try and get good emissions scores out of the dumb box that can't tell what's going to happen next---most of them rate only slightly worse than a manual.
Or maybe it's just trying to minimize shifts since they tend to wear out faster than competently used manuals if used in city traffic too much.

What car? Some autos are fine and some are complete fucking shit. The most consistently dogshit torque converter autos I've driven has always been Peugeots/Citroens, they always suck ass. The absolute worst 'auto' I've driven are the Fiats semi auto gearboxes, that shit is mindblowingly crap. BMW, Merc, Toyota, Mazda autos though? never had issues with how they drive

Spend half an hour on an empty road and learn the shift mapping between accelerator position, speed, and rpm. Manual mode is always shit and should only be used for mountains, just pulse the gas pedal down and partially back up to get it to shift.
If it's an older car you might be able to adjust the shift points, look it up on forums

"Automatics" are actually semi-automatics in that you do have to take some part in their operation. Like your passing example. You were supposed to have it downshifted into the gear you would use just like you would with a manual. Same with curves and corners.
