Ccg are the only ones on this board who actually wrench so I'll ask here.
tl;dr Is this contact pattern going to tear my gears up?
I understand it'll probably make some noise, not concerned about a little noise, it's an old beater truck, but I don't want it howling.
2002 Ram 1500, 2wd, 9.25" Chrysler axle. 270k miles. Pinion bearings were shot. Replaced pinion and carrier bearings. Reused the gear set. From my understanding the pinion is too close with this pattern, but can I run it without tearing the gears up? Moderate towing from time to time.
Really don't want to re-shim and crush the pinion again. I reused the old shim but I guess the new bearings were slightly thicker.

Yea, that pattern is no good, are you working with new gears? Also, if you want the pattern to show up better, dilute the paint with gear oil and apply resistance to the ring gear while spinning. I use a drill and go around 5 times to get a solid pattern. Based on what I see here, looks like you need a thicker pinion shim

It's basically impossible to get a good pattern on old gears since they've been broken in and will never show a true pattern. The best you can do with old gears is new bearings and the same shims. So that pattern could be perfect or trash. Hard to tell but on new gears you'd know for sure if the pattern is good or not

Huh. Very interesting. I will keep that in mind, thank you. That must be why I've heard to pay more attention to the coast side on old gears when looking at the pattern? Because it hasn't seen at much wear, therefore you get more of a "true" pattern?
I crushed the sleeve down just a hair further, repatterned it with more oil in the paint. This is what I've got. I'm gonna roll with this. It's an old beater truck anyway. Thanks for your help.
>since they've been broken in and will never show a true pattern
At risk of belaboring the point, do you have any further explanation on why this is? Is it because one side of the gears is worn more than the other? Therefore, it will never match perfectly with all the other specs you're looking for (backlash, preload, pinion depth, etc)?

back again with a niggling transmission issue with my 74 chrysler that i did a fluid change on after it assploded its trans cooler
I think the transmissions possibly overcooling now? and with the Lucas Trans Fix i added thats like 100+ weight fluid im thinking its really made the oil so much thicker. It takes ages for it to upshift from cold, ill have to idle the car for at least five minutes if i want to see a 1-2 upshift when i pull out into the road. Thats not ideal but its manageable, just warm it up for longer. My real issue is that even 10 minutes into the drive the 2-3 shift wont happen unless i full throttle it. The shifting quality itself is fine, it just wont make that upshift at all unless i make it. Sometimes when its 'stuck' in second i can pull the shifter down into second and back up into D and itll then shift into third. Downshifts are still working fine, i can feel it go back into first no problem when i slow to a stop.
Looking into my manual it seems like R (the Governor) and M (the 2-3 shift valve) are at fault here since it doesn't feel like the clutches are slipping. Also i found out what im doing when i manually shift from second to third under load, its actually routing the fluid again in a sense. What im trying to figure out anyway is if i can adjust the kickdown cable which sounds counter intuitive but it might adjust the internal pressure to account for the heavier oil provided by the lucas trans fix, otherwise i might be forced to take the pan off again and physically clean out the valve bodies
I think i should just 3spd manual swap it lol, auto trans are aids when they start faultering

You're having pump issues. The transmission doesn't actually pump fluid in park, hence the long warm-up time and why manually altering the flow of fluid works.

it literally does though, the pump (S) primes the manual valve (P) via the primary regulator valve (K) ready for distribution when you shift (P). I know its working because itll pick up R and 1 immediately even cold, and the converter circuit is working because i bled the transmission a few weeks ago
>>28532522
it fixed the shudder it had in reverse
anyway, adjusting the kickdown controls the points at which the downshift and throttle valves (T) and (U) activate and directly affects the 2-3 shift valve (M) through the governor (R) and it does change how the car shifts up to third in Drive at low throttle (minimal kickdown position), which is what i wanted to know, is a kickdown just a kickdown or is it a throttle sensor, and its the latter since its the transmissions way of knowing where your foot is on the accelerator. Ill adjust it today and report back with how it goes

following up, i adjusted the kickdown cable because the manual was showing that it was basically the transmissions throttle position sensor. Its basically adjusted to its halfway point since it was all the way at the bottom for some reason and now its made the cable taut. Took it for a drive while making incremental adjustments and 2-3 hits reliably now in the closed throttle (cruising) position while still shifting back into first at a stop. The effect on the rest the of the gear changes (the 1-2 shift) means all the shift points has basically lowered, with 1-2 happening at neighbourhood speeds and 2-3 at an intermediate 30mph making for a lazy driving experience as it should.
Essentially i answered my own question, its all good now

I'd personally stick with what it has and build it out.
If you "need" more, I'd do an EFI Foxbody swap with a 5.0+ and pick a HP target

does anyone have any experience in fabricating interior trim pieces that are no longer produced? I'm planning to try 3d scanning some of my damaged interior plastics to produce a 3d model of the deteriorated trim piece. Then I think I'd be able to fix the damage on the model and fill in missing portions, then 3d print a new trim piece from that.
Has anyone done anything like this?
This is for an '85 Grand Marquis btw. B pillar trim over the seatbelt hardware is turning to dust and is so brittle you can put holes in it with your pinky. I can't find new production pieces, and I could look for used ones, but I think maybe I'd rather try doing the whole 3d scanning thing because that way I could eventually produce some .stl files that'd be useful for other people.

It's definitely been done before, I know some guys have made parts for their A70 supras. Toyota's GR Heritage program has also 3D printed some trim pieces that were previously NLA.
The only issues I can think of would be UV resistance and having a printer big enough to actually print the piece in one go. From what I've seen, ASA is more expensive than ABS but has very good resistance to UV radiation and constant exposure to sunlight

furthest ive gone with trim pieces was recreating the heater knobs on my jaguar which just involved a bunch of measurements with calipers and fiddling until it 'looked' right in cad with its slopes n shiet. Also switch block off panels. Its doable but nothing big which B pillar covers are, really depends on the size of your print bed and how youre going to fasten each segment of the part together. Probably ask >>>/diy/ for their 3d printing general on this one

Good to know. I was thinking ABS or ASA but I'm also planning to try to wrap the plastic with either real leather, or some sort of leatherette which would require adhesives and for which I hear ABS can be hard to work with.
The factory B pillar trim pieces have this sort of coating that's got a pebbled leather texture, but it seems to all be plastic. I may be able to heat up a finished 3d printed trim piece and use a graining pad to apply some sort of texture, but I think doing the piece in leather or at least leatherette would probably be more true to the intended design of the car before they went with just plastic, presumably to cut costs.
I will check with /diy/ as well.
Also, the tentative plan would be to print in sections and use adhesives. Now that I'm researching this it seems that ABS can be hard to use adhesives with, maybe. I'm not sure about ASA.
I'm going to try doing some photogrammetry on my computer soon with small objects to test it out and then I'll start figuring out how I'll do this trim piece. If any of you guys are still interested I'll post updates later.

The little faggot is back on the road, though all is not well. What I thought was rod knock was *actually* the alternator knocking, which is something I must have fucked up, as I disassembled it to replace the bearings. The car also hesitates at high RPM, similar to valve float. Fuel starvation perhaps? There's no vacuum advance on these, so there's always some fuckery going on, but it really does just hit a brick wall at roughly 2500rpm. Revs up just fine when not under any load. Anyone got any ideas?

Thats a repaint and they didn't properly prep beforehand.
There's no way to tell how bad it was the first go round but youre atleast looking at new damage ontop of old damage.
And thats either 1/8" thick paint or its full of bondo, (cant tell if that white is bondo or rubbing compound from a recent polish) either way it implies the damage was more towards the severe end of the spectrum and now its degrading even further.
It needs to be addressed before any mechanical or cosmetic issues are tackled.

Trying to get my fianceβs inherited β55 victoria on the road so we can drive it home from our wedding. It hadnβt run in a few years, but i put on a new fuel pump and now sheβs running again. Carb leaked like crazy so i ordered a rebuild kit from Holley. A few other things:
- drained oil, put 4 quarts in and dip stick read way over-filled???
Iβm guessing the oil filter housing holds 2+ courts must be the reason?
- ordered amsoil 10W-40 for new long-term oil
- going to do all new fuel lines
- going new air filter
- not sure what gear oil to use but i would like to do the diff and the 3 speed manual as well
I think the bias ply tires are actually looking ok for the 20 mile drive to the wedding and back. No dry rot on them. Obviously would like to get new ones. Other items for long term:
- new brake system
- maybe change to 12 volt electrics
- maybe add seat belts
Thanks for any advice guys. My first dabbling with a classic and i love how easy it is. Itβs a spring chicken too, at some point it got painted but it only has 19,850 original miles.

I plan to take the valve covers off and see how the oil flow looks. Got new cover gaskets so i can do this. From what i saw on rock auto it does NOT have hydraulic lifters. So maybe a bent push rod? Do NOT do this. These old dinosaur motors will leak even more than it may already. Just get Valvoline VR-1 conventional 10W-30 or straight 40W for the flat tappets' sake. It has a bunch of zinc in it to keep flat tappet motors running a long time.

I was super disappointed with the Edelbrock if that's the one you got from AZ. Left me one the side of the road twice in 20 miles (got a warranty replacement thinking maybe one was a fluke.) OK, I've been looking for a while. I recommend sticking to your local area when looking for cars, nothings worse than driving a 1k round trip and going home empty handed because the one thing that couldn't possibly be fucked up is, in fact, fucked up and not fixable without pulling the engine or body off.
>Do not get cars that have been left outside. Ever. Check for side marker lens fading, cracked steering wheels, door panel fade, etc.

also if the ac has been converted to r134a just fill it with duracool/hc-12a. propane/isobutane mix that's a drop in replacement for either r12 or r134a; compatible with the oils they use. works just as well as r12 if not better and you only use about 30% of the original charge weight.

My truck was overheating. I thought it couldnβt be the thermostat because i just replaced it four years ago (lol). Then in the winter time it threw an engine coolant temp low code. Looked at the stat. Some retard bent it (me). New stat fixed all.

doing the returning 50 fuel pumps game again, this time with the box truck. Overnighted a carter the same day I exchanged a Delphi at AutoZone, the warranty went back in and lasted 2 days. Put the carter in this morning and it lasted 20 minutes. I can't wait for this country to not be my problem in 6 months

Weird how regardless of brand or nameplate or market or era....nothing you touch ever works.
If only we could decipher this riddle and find the common element.....
