Its a flop because there is no cultural reference for the Z anymore. It costs ~$62,000 which puts it in line with the better sounding and faster Mustang, it was in contention with the Camaro, Challenger, Charger, nearly a Supra, and M2. All of which have more character, power, and charisma over the 400z. It should be $12-16k cheaper than it is to make it compelling over a Miata hard top, BRZ, and anything else within $5k and almost sporty. We used to have "tuner" cars there were cheap and a little sluggish, but with a few thousand over the first couple years of ownership you could make it pretty quick and fun.

Nissan put out a pretty car, but thats all it was.

I very rarely take these engine blowing up scenarios without a grain of salt. I see too many people installing dollar store shit mods and asking questions like how to bleed their cooling system after doing a major upgrade. I see guys bouncing off the rev limiter and talking about tunes they bought from amazon or eBay. I change my oil at 4,000miles and do oil sampling. I will cross the bridge of a possible engine failure when/if it happens.

Fuckin' A. Anyway, installing the factory LSD off a wrecked car is a hell of a lot cheaper than paying a full $10k more for the performance trim. You could probably buy the LSD and get a shop to install it for you for $700-1500, even cheaper if you diy.
Also heated seats are just ballast. I wish my car didn't have them.

I'm at a point in my life (30 years old) where I just don't care about screwing around anymore. I have friends that buy salvaged cars and import them and go through the hassle of paying cash for body work and then going through an inspection and repairing any mechanical defects. Dude, just pay the money and stop screwing around.

I still do all my own car maintenance because I have a shop but I am not installing 'performance' parts on a brand new sports car that I use as a daily driver.

I'd rather just put in some overtime and buy the spec I want. If this was a cheapo second car that I purchased with the intent of upgrading it, I would be all over it. I just don't see the point in compromising my wants. Plus the warranty is a factor.

I see people in the forums with 2,000miles on their cars and they have upgraded the intakes, upgraded the coolers, upgraded the swaybars, glued carbon fiber trim pieces to their interiors, unplugged the oil pressure regulator because it's a possible failure point on older engines, tuned the car and fucked with the alignment. And then people are always posting dumb shit about the car running rough or not being reliable.

I trust the engineers in Japan more than the dude in Arkansas selling aftermarket parts.

Bro I agree
I love watching automotive YouTube and live vicariously through others

Doing non-off-the-shelf mods seems like a HUGE ball ache. Body work? Fuck that. Spending hundreds or thousands of dollars in aesthetic upgrades that no one will notice?

I'm just getting old. I do love setting aside some time each year to do big maintenance jobs on my evo. Timing belt last Christmas. Braided lines and new slave cylinder probably next Christmas.

I love cars and tinkering, but stuffing around is a young man's game. Agreed that you should just work harder for a wage and buy something with less possibility of having zero return for a lot of time, and non trivial amounts of money

>>28535035
Nah I'm seeing more instances where getting the top trim is more cost effective than piecing it up diy. Don't forget that the top trim retains much better resale value. This doesn't matter with a $10k shitbox, but if you're fucking around with a $70k car now, it matters

Good looking car. Are many parts interchangeable with the 350 and 370? Would be great to keep those old girls on the road longer with new parts availability.

I live in the DFW area my guy. They're obviously not as common as US-made Camaros and Mustangs, but I see one on the road every other time I go out for groceries.
All the 350Zs I've seen but one were clapped to shit, but the vast majority of 370Zs in the area are relatively well-kept. A cursory search on the usual dealer aggregate sites will get you plenty of base model coupes/roadsters for less than $15k, and a sport touring with relatively low miles for around $20k. Nismos are still unreasonably expensive but everything else is rather fairly priced right now.
>>28537041
Just about everything that isn't part of the engine/transmission can be used relatively interchangeably. The shell of the new Z is literally just a slightly more rigid version of the 370z with slightly wider front wheels.

I agree with both statements. I've had people say they couldn't justify a sports car for this price and the fuel price. But they drive a 2022 Pickup Truck 45 minutes to work everyday and pay more money in gas than I do.

This might be the only 'cheap' feeling part of the car. The buttons don't feel great when you press them. I also can't figure out how the 3 position button works for PreviousSong-NextSong-Menu and the phone controls. It's one large button face.

Yesterday I went for a drive and saw 1 Zupra, 4 Corvettes (C7 I think), 1 Hellcat and 2 Newer Cobras (could have been fake badges, I dno, I'm not a Dodge/Ford guy). The day before that I saw 2 Ferraris and 2 Convertible Yellow Corvettes during my morning commute.

I get a lot of smiles, thumbs up, frantic head turns and people saying "nice car" at the gas station. It makes me feel special (my mom was right).

Yep. It's the Canada spec so it's very confusing. We are so used to not having rear fog lights except on expensive European import cars. I've had lots of people with Benzs ask why their brake light is out and I have to explain it's a REAR foglight and they need to turn off the fog lights during the day.

Single reverse light would be fine if it was like a mini cooper with it in the center. But only on one side looks like a defect.

Trunk storage is interesting in this car. The floor is so high that you need to push most stuff forward. I have a little fabric organizer with a cargo net over it to hold any groceries or small purchases.

Haven't tried it in winter yet. We don't get much snow so it should be fine. Gonna buy a set of nice rims and get winter tires put on.

It's gonna suck though because I can't fit 4 tires in the trunk, so I gotta bring a second vehicle to pickup the 4 tires and bring them back to my house for storage. After that initial purchase I should be fine though. I can swap them out in my garage every season.

>Does anyone know how reliable are the vr30 motors?
Well, I haven't been stranded by it. The motors usually blow up due to low oil pressure, so keeping these filled with oil is a must and probably with a heavier weight than 0w-20 if you live in a hot climate and plan to push the car hard.
Older Infiniti VR30's had turbo seal failures and porous block. For the 2016-2018 Infiniti VR30's, they have an extended warranty on the turbos now for those model years only. Though, I seen a guy get 200k miles with a 2017 Q50 that has the original engine and turbos while also being tuned.
The Nissan Z VR30 has upgrades over the Infiniti like having a more secure smooth idler pulley and a bigger oem heat exchanger (though probably should upgrade too)
Anonymous No.28538264 [Report] >>28538687
>>28538242
low oil pressure is primarily caused by the engine oil pressure control solenoid. they tend to fail in low pressure mode and people unwittingly drive the car at high rpm making sub 25psi. by the time you see a p0524 code, it's too late. you can unplug them and they default to high mode but throw a p06da and p06db but can be masked in tune.

the porous block issue has been more closely identified to 2 more specific causes. 1 issue AMS did a video on. the head casting leaks through a crack made close to the integrated exhaust manifold. usually originating from headbolt close to IEM. the 2nd issue is actually leaking coolant gallery plugs in the head. I sealed mine just in case with permatex high temp red thread sealer and new crush washers. that isn't to say there haven't been porous blocks but Infinitis modis operandi was "if there is coolant mixed in oil and the car passed a coolant system hydrocarbon test, replace engine under warranty" and then they declined much further investigation on the issue.

Anonymous No.28538700 [Report] >>28538903

>first off why is that a thing in a regular traffic engine like this?
It just gives higher pressure when your engine needs it and low pressure when it doesn’t. Saves a marginal amount of fuel and other automakers do it too. A problem with the infiniti VR30 cars is that they don’t have way to monitor oil pressure without hooking up an oil pressure gauge or seeing parameters through Ecutek or anything to read from the Obd2.
Anonymous No.28538903 [Report]
>>28538700
it's even a bit deeper than that. the engine oil pressure control solenoid has no fail safe condition. if the p06da/db codes are popped, it doesn't throw a MIL. there is no consumer facing warning sign that it has failed except when the dash tells you that you've lost oil pressure. by then it's too late, engine toast. the new ecutek update coming out will have a feature to combat this. they haven't release exactly what parameters you can change though but tuners in the know have said that you can have oil pressure vs engine load as a monitored condition. if oil pressure doesn't match engine load then torque management is implemented. there may be timers and other axis they can program into the safety strategy but ATM that's all I know. the best option at this time is to unplug it and leave it at that.

A beautiful facelift though. And if the platform doesn't have any issues, why mess with it?

I'm new to the Nissan platform, especially the Z lineup. Was there anything inherently bad about the last 15 years of this car? A lot of people just say "it wasn't updated, the interior looks the same too", but if you look in any modern car you will just see slop and screens everywhere. I think the Z looks great inside and literally every car has black plastic in it. The HVAC controls do look very budget, especially compared to the GR86 or any Kia from the last 10 years. It also makes zero sense on modern cars to remove the sunglasses holder and put a fucking SOS and Wrench button in their place. Who pushes the fucking Wrench button on their car? I'm assuming it calls a tow truck if you subscribed to their shitty app?
It's also weird that you don't get grab handles in the ceiling. I've had a few passengers reach for them and they awkwardly fall out of the car expecting to be grabbing that handle.

What does the Z directly compete with? The GR86 competes with the MX5, the Toyota Supra Competes with the BMW Supra and some sort of Acura/Honda in that price range. In the past few decades, Z cars have competed with the Mustang GT and Camaro SS of their respective generations. I can't say much about the other models, but the 350Z and 370Z both slightly edged out the others from a performance standpoint and were the same price or a bit cheaper depending on your locale.
The Camaro's gone (for now), and the new Z (at least the performance trim) seems to be as fast as the S650 Mustang for the same price, but I'd agree that the Supra (if you're short enough to fit in it) or Corvette are now so competitively prices that there's very little reason not to go for those unless the other cars are being sold at a discount.
