I've got a 90 corvette that wont start, just drove it the other day and it wouldn't start this morning, just cranked with no sign of catching. I am getting no spark or fuel injector pulses. It has 40psi at the the fuel rail after i turn the key and the pump primes. Security light also goes off after i turn the key to the on position so i don't think it had anything to do with vats. Would i be correct in thinking that the pickup coil in the distributor shit out? I'm thinking that the ecu is the only thing that controls both fuel and spark but isn't the pickup coil where it gets the signal?
Car has given me no trouble for the last 2 years before today. I've also checked all the fuses and they are all good.
>>28538332 (OP)new cap is $20, i'd start there
>>28538332 (OP)Could be a crank or cam position sensor as well as the coil? Start with whatever is cheapest and easiest to get to.
>>28538368ac delco cap is less than one year old and i don't think that would affect the fuel injectors
>>28538395no cam or crank sensors on this, i think the pickup coil is the only rotational sensor the ecu can read from
whatโs in /o/โs emergency kit?
>>28538332 (OP)>no spark or fuel injector pulsesCheck your grounds. The ones attached to the engine, firewall, alternator, etc. and the battery cables too.
No spark or fuel injectors leads me to think electrical issues are present and you should look at small things such as electrical connections first before you go big and start randomly blowing moolah on new parts.
How would this have ended up so filthy inside?
Is it normal for one of these old EGR valves to leak this much from the underside vent port things when doing a smoke test? I had the smoke machine plumbed in to a vacuum port just behind the throttle body. A video would do it more justice but there was quite a bit of smoke coming out, not just a tiny little bit and it all seemed to be coming from distinct holes on the underside not from the roll crimp, and removing the vacuum line on top didn't make it stop nor come out of the vacuum port so the diaphragm is presumably still good and the smoke was definitely coming from the intake side.
>>28538631nah bro it's definitely the ECM, just get multiple new ECMs
>>28538332 (OP)Not sure how the corvette dizzy works exactly but for most dizzy+efi setups the ecu knows to fire the injectors based on readings from the dizzy.
If you can find a working complete dizzy for cheap then may as well get it to see. There's throwing money at the car with new parts hoping it'll stick then there is buying spares because they will be needed eventually (always good to have spares) and it's easy to troubleshoot when you have something to swap out and test.
Also get a workshop manual and a multimeter. Workshop manual will have diagnostics to work through.
>>28538770>>28538770>Also get a workshop manual and a multimeter. Workshop manual will have diagnostics to work through.^THIS.
The car has neither spark nor fuel delivery... So why is the valve cover off? Why are you doing smoke tests?
>>28538332 (OP)Check/replace the ignition control module in the distributor, when it fails youโll have no spark and the ecm wonโt fire the injectors. Also verify the ignition coil is ok with a multimeter, when the coil starts to go bad but not outright fail, it will repeatedly kill ignition control modules.
>>28538332 (OP)>MR2S >Still runs lean after warming up>Changed burnt o2 sensors>Going to check sparks and injectors this weekend since they're likely fouled up by now>But I suspect vacuum leak>Engine only feels off balance when off throttle and warmed up, revs dip to 500 and only just staying alive>Is fine under powerAny thing else I'm missing to check here? >>28538631>>28538770>>28538831I pulled the distributor apart and ohm'd the pickup coil, no continuity at all so i'm pretty sure its bad. Every piece of plastic in the distributor literally turned to dust as i tried unplugging them so i've got a new distributor coming in the mail now.
>>28538925Try getting ahold of a scanner that can pull live data. Fuel trims should give you a pretty good idea if its running lean.
>>28538332 (OP)>Would i be correct in thinking that the pickup coil in the distributor shit out?TPI?
It could be the pickup coil, check resistance through the coil. These usually die slow deaths, runs great cold but when hot car stumbles/misfires a bit, eventually dies from thermal failure.
Ignition coil, I've only ever had one fail, and that was because the PO mangled the connector that slides into the dist cap.
It could be the ignition module, these can be hard to test as they can test good on the bench but not function in car. Verify there is enough heat sink paste.
But the dumbest failure I've had on a few HEIs is the three wire connector hidden behind the Tach/Power connector on the HEI cap deforms and no longer latches. This gives you no signal/tach.
Verify the wire connection there is good and the plastic connector is properly latching. It's a bitch to get to on F and Y bodies because of the lack of firewall room.
>>28538712Change the oil more often, varnish buildup is from excess heat(cooking oil) or extended oil change intervals, or both.
>>28538760>Is it normal for one of these old EGR valves to leakNo.
EGR should not leak from the pintle side, and vacuum should not leak from diaphragm.
That egr valve diaphragm is ruptured. Time for a new one.
>>28538808>The car has neither spark nor fuel delivery... So why is the valve cover off? Why are you doing smoke tests?Kek'd

what is this little circle there for
Good place for used car deals? Looking at craigslist & cars.com mainly, but I just want to see if there are any other good places to scan. FB marketplace isn't an option for me.
So I have a '91 Jeep Cherokee(build december of 1990, sold as '91, I do not believe it has RENIX parts), Manual 4 wheel drive, 115k miles. I have an engine issue, was told it's piston slap/rod knock. All the auto shops in the area are backed up two and a half months. I am not abandoning my cherokee, I have the means to buy a crate engine but I have never done an engine swap before. I've changed oil, done suspension work and plugs, wires and cap, very basic entry level things. I was warned by more experienced mechanics that doing a rebuild would be much more difficult so I have been leaning toward the swap. If I do the swap I will be working on my own and using youtube guides more or less.
I suppose my question is more "Would you recommend someone attempt this?" and if I do what advice would you have? As I understand it I won't have to drop the transmission to get the engine out and while it's out I figure I may as well do the clutch. My hope is that since it's a 91 it's got less electrical shit to ruin. Generally any advice people can give me at all would be amazing because looking at the job from having done only simple things so far is daunting at best and horrifying at worst. Thank you. (pic not my jeep)

>>28539590Well it had a good 22 year run I guess. Probably just block it off. I also sprayed some ether at it while the engine was running but it didn't react, is it still likely to be bad?
>>28539773I was at a similar level to you when i did my first engine replacement. So much depends on the specifics of the vehicle, but it should be doable with some gumption
Biggest suggestion is to bag and label your bolts. My first time was with a fairly annoying vehicle and i ended up having a few leftovers that are in my toolbox waiting to find their home.
As far as the clutch goes since you'll have all the room in the world there shouldn't be many issues. If you need a seal puller don't cheap out. One of the most annoying bits will just lining the engine and trans back together, it helps to have a second set of hands.
Quality of life stuff, get an electric ratchet and impact if you don't already. The shartmart brand stuff is super cheap and works so much better than expected.
Use a torque wrench for any rotating stuff like your clutch/flywheel
>>28540149Excellent, thank you. Been spending a few hours looking into it and thankfully since it's a 91 I won't have to worry about half as many cords and wires as some later models it looks like.

Its almost certainly going to piss you off, but that is just part of the game.
Lucky that you don't have many connectors but if they bug you or you think it will help then use some painters tape or something around the cable and the sensor so you can easily match them back up. Usually it isn't a problem because the connector will only fit in one sensor, but ymmv
Small stupid stuff for after you get thing back together, get a spill proof funnel thing from harbor freight or the internet so you can bleed the coolant easily and it might help to have an extra jack if you're trying to fit the tranny and engine together again alone. Even a tiny trolley jack or spare scissor jack

Either AT or MT but preferably kinda in the middle of that.
Does anyone have experience using "lifter/tappet free" oil additive?
It's always mixed reviews whether it helps to quiet down lifters.
My lifters were fine before I decided to pull the head and let them sit out in the open and get dusty for 3 weeks. Now they are noisy as shit. May as well try the additive before I spend an entire afternoon and evening to pull apart and clean the lifters.

total wrenchlet
I got myself a secondary truck that I infrequently use, when I first got it, it ran perfectly and started up instantly, however I only really drive the thing once or twice a week or a month, and once it started to sit for a month the crank time started to get really long. Sometimes requiring two to three key turns.
At first I thought it might be the battery, so I charged it up completely using a trickle charger but it still has a pretty long crank time, is this something to worry about?
>>28543791To add to this, the truck is 35 years old, and has 12k miles on it. The only thing I did was change all of the fluids on it as soon as I got it.
>>28543796If it runs fine once it starts up, just replace the battery completely. That's the issue for 99 percent of wrenchlets

OP here, new distributor fixed it. Ohm'd the new distributors pickup coil and got 900ohm so my original was the culprit. My radio picked up some ignition noise before but its quite a bit worse now so im sure all the guts in the distributor are cheap as hell. I do like the new cap design that has the spring loaded clamps instead of the screws, but we'll if it can last.
>>28543823The throttle shaft bushings went bad in my original throttle body so i replaced it with an aftermarket BBK one. They didnt mention that the opening for the air snorkel was bigger so i tried slowly warming it up with a torch so i could stretch it over the new throttle body. I heated it too much and melted it a bit so i wrapped it in duct tape to seal it back up. It still fit tight as hell so i wrote something like Do Not Remove From Throttle Body or something like that. It wore off pretty quick. Should have boiled some water and just dipped the snorkel in that instead of using a flame like a dumbass.

I've been having this vibration in my steering and sometimes rear for the past few months.
First thought the balancing weights fell off since one of the wheels didn't have any weights. Went to get them all rebalanced, which seemed to fix the issue, but it gradually came back.
It only happens above 50 mph, but it doesn't seem to be consistently correlated with speed. On I-25 between Santa Fe and Las Vegas (NM), it seems most pronounced.
What I don't understand is why it's only on specific stretches of that highway, seemingly worse near Santa Fe. I've tried taking it at the same range of speeds on some U.S. highways nearby, which gave the impression there's no balancing issue at all, as I did not experience vibration in either the steering nor the rear.
Does this mean it's likely just patches in the road that have corrugations that cause the vibration?
My understanding of imbalance vibrations is that they happen more intensely at a resonant speed, whereas this seems to happen at avariety of speeds with varying intensity. Considering getting it balanced again, but I don't want to waste my time if it's probably just the road.
>>28544880swap your front and rear tires. if the vibration goes away or switches axles it's a problem in your wheels/tires. if it stays the same it's a problem with your suspension or just how that road is
Is it just me/placebo or does a car feel so much smoother running when it has fresh oil?
>>28544880Tires are less than 15k mile old continentals btw. I've also had a rim and tire replaced on the front because it was slow leaking and tire shop convinced me rim was dented. was actually a leaky plug in the tire. Suspension looks fine as far as I can tell. Also had pads and rotors replaced recently. Not sure what other options there are to rule out.
>>28544379>>28544478Update:
I measured the voltages coming from the harness for the fuel pump sensor and temperature sensor and everything was fine. I then took the fuel pump assembly back out, measured the resistances for both sensors, and got a totally normal result. I guess everything is fine, even though the light's on?
I did initially swap two ground wires on accident and tested the car with the wrong wire configuration before fixing the problem, so it's probably just that. I'll try reseating the connectors just in case that's the issue. Or maybe I just need to drive the car around until the ECU gets used to the minutely different readings
Does launching a (manual) car with traction control on hurt the clutch (anymore than than launching the car already does)?
If TC causes the rear wheels to brake when spinning, does that mean the clutch is getting burned? Or because the engine power is also cut, it cancels out?
Thanks.
>>28545409No, if your clutch starts slipping because of traction control it was already fucked.
>>28545551I mean taken to the logical extreme, a attempting burnout with TC on would wreck the clutch pretty easily.

it's one of those things a lot of people completely neglect to ever do
I would suggest changing:
engine oil
oil filter
brake fluid
spark plugs (at least check them)
air filter (at least check it, if it's something like a k&n, clean and oil it)
clutch fluid
trans oil
diff fluid
coolant
cabin air filter (again, at least check it)
check belts and hoses
check brake pads and rotors
check tires
And keep a log of your mileage when you changed all that shit
>>28546438it's ok anon, we all learn sometime. next time you get in a pickle, take pictures and post to the stupid questions thread, and i will walk you through how to get out of said jam. good job for trying, most people don't even get that far.

I was getting a check engine light after getting an oil change yesterday at Valvoline and I am 90% sure they bumped this flat-faced thingy with two holes that plugs into the air intake, which gave me a Check Engine Light after idling in the parking lot for 45 mins. I reconnected it and also cleaned out my air box. I'm just wondering what that connector hose with two holes (one big, one small) is.
The flat faced thing
>>28548014Some sort of an emissions valve that opens and closes allowing vacuum to operate other emissions parts on the engine it looks like. having it unhooked would cause a lean condition (meaning air would get in that doesn't first pass through the mass air flow sensor which senses how much air is coming in, leading to too much air for the amount of fuel, or lean on fuel)
I have a turbo GDI engine
Should I install an oil catch can?
>>28548026That's exactly what was happening, I for P0171 (lean fuel mix) and my car felt like hell on the way home. Only reason I didn't do the extended research/messing around there was because a storm was coming. Should mention just in case, it's a 2006 Honda Accord, 4 cyl.
Is it normal to have big fuel trim values when driving?
>>28538332 (OP)I got into a fender bender a while back and it destroyed my outside temp sensor. I order a replacement and connected it to test. It works fine but how should I go about splicing these wires together permanently in a way that wonโt potentially expose the connections to water?
>>28547714Thanks. It was a simple enough job and everything was going well until I snapped the bolt off clean. This didn't discourage me at all if anything it makes me want to do better. Next time I will get a proper impact drive instead of relying on just wrenches, that's what fucked me up. I also ran into issues with the wheel well fenders, there was one screw that was so rusted rusted I couldn't get out so I sawed it off.
Amazingly now, my dads 03 Civic is having trouble. The car is dead, neighbor has a battery charger and it tested at 13 volts and it's charged. What could be wrong? Could a relay or fuse be causing this? Alternator?

1st gear can get engaged if the clutch was only partially applied right? If the answer to this is yes then its probably time for new clutch components right?
Also no clutch slippage or floating rpms tho, as far as I can tell
>>28548347>>28548351Thanks, I ordered the heat shrink.
>>28538332 (OP)Do any of your guys send your oil to get tested after doing an oil change? Was thinking about doing it but unsure which kit/service to use.
>>28543796The spark plugs need to be changed more if you drive so infrequently, they never burn themselves clean. And will cause longer cranking. Idk if you have an electric fuel pump but you can rule out pressure issues by successfully starting after clicking the key a few times to build pressure.
>>28543460Use a few gulps of gasoline in the oil. It will evaporate itself out after it cleans.

>>28548432tested for what? herpes?
>>28548051No. Start with cleaning MAF sensor.
>>28548555Wear particles, contamination and oil degradation. Not that anon, but in other fields besides daily driving it's pretty common to test used oil from ICEs to check if everything is okay with the engine and the oil you're using. Costs money and takes time though, but if the engine or repair-related delays are expensive enough, people do that.
>>28548432My engine is stock, it doesn't burn any appreciable amount of oil between changes, I use the recommended oil, and it looks pretty clean every time I've changed it out. If any of those factors were to change then I'd consider sending it to get tested, but for now there's no reason to do so. If I had to, Blackstone is the standard, sends out sample containers for free, and is cheaper than most alternatives
>>28548432Don't worry about it until your oil starts looking sparkly, after which you should get it checked on every change

hey guys
im looking for whats called a "line in adapter" for my car audio.
I want to bypass my headunit, and simply use an aux in or BT adapter to drive the speakers directly through the amp.
Ive been googling this but all i find are "output converters"
i hate my cars early 2000's ugly as fuck headunit. i only use my phone as an input device. ive seen setups were folks completely remove their headunit and have a simple volume knob with an aux input.
it kinda looks like pic related. not sure if thats what i need.

Am I basically good if I buy any well reviewed jackstand? Obviously they're incredibly important to get right, don't want a 2ton hunk of metal to fall on my head. Any suggestions for cheap ones? I know Rockauto sells some. Also, is the half/one/two ton limit per stand or for the entire car?
New car. Never seen this wiper blade connector before. What's it called?
>>28550157Weight ratings are total for the pair. 2 ton jacks hold 4000 pounds of weight in front or back. Realistically if there hasn't been a recall, posts about failures, or thick rust, they'll work fine
>>28550117That's a a good idea I don't think I have a pick tool though. I'll try prying from the bottom. If that fails I don't want to spend $40 on a relay plier.

Hey bros, Iโm trying to take apart this grease gun because the lockout lever fell into the body of the gun. >>28550391Thanks anon. Iโm going to try and get a vice grip on it, but itโs fuckin annoying because the plunger spring needs to be pushed down in order to work on it. Itโs like I need three hands. Glad to see Iโm not retarded and this was some chinkโs cost cutting decision instead of a cotter pin
>>28550431i thought a cotter pin would be cheaper...which was why i thought this must be some bong or kraut design from the 50s or some shit
>>28550431actually. those slots in the plunger plate - would that let the plate be removed? maybe the dowel pin fits in those and then you rotate it again so it can be taken out?
>>28550196got a pic from the side? maybe it disconnects elsewhere?
>>28550446Nope, somehow the plate is retained even with the pin rotated and stuck below the cutout. The pin was hidden under there normally until I exposed it for the photo. Iโm thinking with the pin removed, the spring should push the plunger plate out for good.
>>28550452definitely sure it doesn't need a hard tap or something like that because it's just a bit stuck on a ridge or something? just in case it turns out you didn't have to remove the pin
>>28550464Nah definitely itโs mechanically retained by something unless the pin is removed. Like the pin rests on a shelf under the plate. Tried a beefy pair of pliers and the fuckin thing wonโt budge. Ugh. Itโs like it was never designed to be taken apart.
>>28550464Also canโt get any leverage or force on the pin to tap it out because itโs below the lip of the grease barrel. No room to swing a small hammer or tap with a wrench.
>>28550470>>28550474damn. that's why i was thinking of channel lock pliers, you could at least get in with some decent amount of leverage. you'd need to find something to shove into the hole that can help push it further out by being pressed by the pliers, assuming you can't get needle nose pliers, grip the pin that's pushed halfway out and twist and pull at the same time till it pops out
>>28549496i've been doing car audio for decades and have never heard of this. i'm not sure it exists. just get a cheap aliexpress head unit with line in and preamp outputs. you can even get one with carplay/android auto for like $30.

How much is a Saturn LL0 engine with 180k miles worth? My dad's been doing some cleaning up, it hasn't run in years but it's been covered up. Should I try to sell it online or just sell it to a salvage yard?
I messed up changing my brakes. I have 4 piston brembos I noticed that my pistons weren't compressing as the way. I looked at the brake fluid resivoir and saw it overflow a bit. Stupidly, I decided to pump the brakes a bit with the car off and no pads in the caliper to try and relieve some pressure. One of the pistons went pretty far out and now I can't compress it back with slip joint pliers anymore.
My idea to fix this is to use two c-clamps. I'd take an old pad and keep depressed the side with moving pistons. I'd then get another old pad and slowly try to depress the stuck piston using a second c-clamp with the bleeder open.
Would this work? I've also heard stories where a piston gets stuck like this because it's slightly dislodged. If it's off center, how would I correct it?
>>28551182throw it on marketplace, if its a runner you can get $300 - $500 for it. put in the ad that they will need to load or they'll expect you to have a forklift
>>28551250pull it out completely and start over. it'll go in but it has to be at an extremely precise angle or it'll bind up. search youtube videos for rebuilding front calipers for some techniques to try. if it's not going it's because the angle is wrong, dont try to force it if it's binding.
>>28551266also it'll be much easier on the bench and you'll already have to bleed the brakes, so i would remove the caliper completely if you havent already
>>28551266>>28551267Thanks for the advice anon. I'm hoping I can avoid a rebuild, but I will if I have to. Here's a picture of the caliper. Piston doesn't look crooked, but I don't know.

Replaced my stock radio with an old aftermarket one.
It has very frequent hiccups when playing music via the CD player (music stops and resumes for half a second). Could it potentially be a cable/wire issue or is the CD player/disk reader just fucked....?
If so would it be feasible to fix it?
I really don't want to part with this thing desu.
>>28551277>>28551282well if the bleeder valve is closed you're pushing against all that fluid, I would at least open the bleeder and try it.
if it's popped out completely, which it sounds like it might not have, the angle has to be extremely precise, you'd never be able to tell visually.
also rebuilding a front caliper is easy as shit, you're 90% of the way there now, the only additional step is pulling completely apart, cleaning it up and replacing the seals which cost like $5
>>28551311if you want a warranty you can almost certainly buy it for a fraction of the price online, dealers put a huge markup on it. you should be able to get a refund for the unused portion of the warranty if you decide to cancel it.
not great, but they're only 6 years old and have decent tread. i would drive on them, but i wouldn't have them on a car my wife drives my kids around in if that helps.
>>28551416check the voltage on yellow wire and the ground, maybe even run a 12v light bulb (not led) parallel to the yellow and black wires on the radio and see if there are brownouts when it skips. if not these things are basically unrepairable, just get a used one on ebay
>>28551478* you could also run a test wire to the yellow and black wires directly from the battery (with a fuse) temporarily and see if that resolves it. i'm willing to bet this exact radio is like $40 on ebay,

I have a EJ255 that sputters when accelerating under 50-100% throttle. There is no CEL. So fair I have tried:
>replaced all sparkplugs and coil boots: this fixed an intermittent misfire as one plug was shattered>checked compression: all cylinders @ ~115-120 psi>I did a smoke test and found a couple boost leaks - fixed with new seals/hoses.>Checked oil line banjo bolts on AVCS: found one was clogged and removed the filter>Checked fuel pressure and fuel pressure regulator: all in spec>Replaced upstream O2 sensor>temporarily replaced (individually) MAF, MAP, Crank Position Sensor, Camshaft Position sensors, and boost solenoid with parts from the junkyard>cleaned the throttle body and original MAF>used 3 bottles of fuel injector cleaner over ~1.5 tanks of fuel.>Did several idle relearnsSo far nothing has worked. The symptoms actually feel like they go away after resetting the ECM, but eventually come back after a few minutes of driving. Any ideas of how to diagnose? I can look at basic traces with a scan tool but I'm not too sure what to look for. Otherwise the only other things I feel like I can try is new purge solenoids, blow off valve, throttle body, or injectors.
>>28551331Almost every tire I've seen on daily drivers at 5+ years looks like that. You still have plenty of tread and the date code is only 6 years. It's probably fine for another season.

So I'm looking at having to order a remanufactured engine, what are the common methods of moving it around? I never ordered something that big, would they drop it in the gravel alley way near my garage or am I going to have to figure out how to move it myself? Any ideas welcome, it'd have to go around the sidewalked block into a gravel alley to get to my garage if they only deliver in the front.
>>28557022i dont really see a problem in your image, can you point arrows or post a better image?
>>28557049Ask the seller. With standard delivery they might want you to pick it up at the freight terminal or expect you to have a forklift. Ideally you'd want liftgate (they unload from the truck) and inside delivery (they bring it inside your building), but they will probably charge extra for those.
An engine hoist can lift an engine and roll it around, but won't roll well on gravel and probably won't reach high enough to unload it from the truck.

There's nothing else you can do, and bitching about it here won't change that. Better to wait for 1-2 weeks than fuck your lights up and have to order new ones, especially if the guy offered to redo them for free
>>28538433I have a spare ECU and distributor and CPS along with the tools to change said items.

>>28558697multiple people have given you literally the only two possible options you fucking retard. you can send them back, or you can take them apart and fix them yourself. and you're too much of a helpless whiny fucking woman to do either, you'd rather sit here and whine about it. jesus fucking christ kill yourself tonight.
Buying a used car and looking specifically at 2 options at a dealership that look good to me- almost the exact same price and same km/s (~150000).
Difference is one is a camry and one is a corolla ascent. Before I go myself to look at them, is there that great of a difference between these models, e.g in reliability (or just anything really)?
>>28559238Oops forgot to say they're the same year (2009)
>>28558878Sowwy I hurt your little feelies.
I found two options other than those, using a microfibre wrapped magnet and directing it with a magnet on the outside or cycling compressed air and vacuum. Neither worked though.
I'm at my wits end with my fucking ranger. started hearing a squeak and a thunk which I could feel in the cab, only seems to start at 20 km/h or so, definitely speed reliant ie drivetrain or wheel issue, goes away when I brake, but it seems like it's getting worse. just showed up suddenly one day.
I've rebuilt my rear diff, replaced a u joint (other one seemed fine), removed the front prop shaft entirely and it's only getting louder.
So most manufacturers recommend oil change intervals of 10,000 miles or once-a-year, whichever comes first. We enthusiasts generally understand that the best practice is to cut that mileage interval in half. That's great, but what about the time interval? I almost never see anyone giving advice to change your oil twice-a-year. Why is that?
>>28559349if you're at speed does it go away if you put it in neutral? is it worse when accelerating? if either of those it's likely drivetrain related. if neither of those it's most likely wheel related.
If you believe wheel related you can try swapping front and rear wheels and see if the sound seems to move. Spin each rim and check for warp damage, check each tire for a broken cord, check for missing wheel weights or possibly just get the wheels balanced. check each brake for parts hitting the wheel, stuff stuck between the drum/rotor and shoe/pad, loose brake hanger bolts, etc.
>>28559517Time interval doesn't matter at all. 5 year old oil performs just as well as fresh oil. It's been studied extensively.
>>28559612wat. everywhere i see the reason for yearly oil changes if mileage is low is because the ingredients wear out over time
>>28559719>the ingredients wear out over timethey don't though
>>28538332 (OP)>buying a c4 that isn't a ZR1 LOL
Can i change sway bar links with only one wheel in the air at a time? Or does the entire front have to be up in the air?
>>28559806Jack up both sides of the same axle and put your jackstands under the lower control arm so the suspension is still compressed, sway bar end links are usually only designed to go on and off in that neutral position (no suspension droop) and only one side being up will put tension on the bar
>>28559719even if this were true, it's not 'wearing' at a stand still.
>>28559610never thought to pop it in neutral, will try this. I bet it's my fucking brakes.
I posted the other thread about my '16 ford focus a/c compressor dying, well I think it's about had it. I'm a wrenchlet so hopefully it's as easy as the youtube videos look. The ebay listing for the part says it's a good idea to replace other components. Is that simple enough/necessary even? It says expansion valve and accumulator. I watched a couple videos trying to learn how car A/C works and I half-understand.
Also I haven't been able to look underneath to see if it's just a bad pully or if there's something internal that needs a complete replacement (im just buying the whole compressor anyway). When it would work it would sporadically make a lot of noise especially at idle. Now I get nothing and it wasn't cooling yesterday but just now it seemed to be working. So i don't know.
I ordered the compressor for now. Please advise me if I need to do or replace anything more.
>>28559818Ok thanks. My stands were in use but I'll get 2 more.
>>28559849Change everything and flush the entire A/C system. There might be shards from the broken compressor in there that could have damaged other things and if not cleaned will just break your new compressor as well.

Can I just pour in more coolant to the reservoir? Or do I need to do something other bullshit as well?
>>28560471if there's some in the reservoir, go for it. if it's completely empty / your system is empty, don't pour coolant on a hot engine. Some blocks (I think aluminum ones?) have been cracked after pouring cold coolant into a hot system.
what car would you nibbas have as a second car? 370z, a used gr86, nb/nc/nd miata, mazda3speed turbo (the hot hatch one that's old but pushes 300 hp and a lot of torque steer?), a c5 corvette...just don't know what I want. Kind of want the 370z but people say it's like a boat compared to other cars in its class.
>>28560471Yes, but only if you know what type of coolant is already in it. Mixing coolants is a big no-no
>>28560502Of the options, the 370z and c5 corvette are the best.
The only people who call it a boat are miatafags, but they call every non-miata a boat because its weight (or lack thereof) is all a miata has. The 370Z actually has about the same skidpad results as the miata, and the sport/nismo trims have consistently better numbers.
The c5 corvette is slightly worse for slightly less than the 370z at base, and slightly better for slightly more (but with a much more dated interior) as the Z06.

Are there engine paint color conventions people give a fuck about or enforce culturally or is it kinda' "do whatever you want". I just don't want to paint it the wrong color and have some guy be like "OH BACK IN 1983 IF YOUR ENGINE WAS THIS COLOR IT MEANT YOU SECRETLY LOVED BUTTFUCKING!"
>>28560652Nobody gives a fuck about engine paint colors as long as you take it out of the car and paint each component separately instead of doing a shitty spray job
>>28560652I'd rather people thought I loved buttfucking than be caught worrying about this possibility
>>28560859Look I used the term 'rawdogging it' at church until I got a kind hand on the shoulder, I can't be too careful.
>>28560861you should stencil RAW DOG on your engine
>>28560652Yeah, there are traditional colors and some are better than others. Like a bunch of chrome on a 400 small block will make it overheat. Ford blue. Chevy orange. Some weird teal Mopar.
>>28561168>Some weird teal Mopar.MMMMMMOOOOOOPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR OR NOOOOOO CAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
>>28559612What a stupid fuck. Time is all that matters. The engine doesnโt know how many miles the tires go and it can oxidise and plasticise and shit, just sitting around. What if you just run idle for six weeks straight?

FWD peugeot, rear brake was stuck, the handbrake doesn't do anything at all, the right side rear brake was open and just wouldn't brake so it didn't matter but the other wheel (pictured) was seized and constantly braking
couldn't disassemble the brake caliper itself because every bolt is rusted and stuck, all I could take out was caliper guiding pins and spring so I just started hammering the fucking brake pad itself and pulled it out
this car only needs to be on the road for another month until I get my actual car back from the shop, how retarded would it be to drive this car like this with no rear brake pad if the handbrake doesn't even work and the car is FWD?
Is Amsoil actually a good product despite their business model being MLM?
if you have a car that hasn't had an oil change in years, are you better to just change it cold, or still warm it up first like you'd do for any other oil change?
i don't know if i'm doing a pressure test right or im retarded
i was trying to check my coolant system for leaks. i saw a drip on my 2005 pontiac gp from the radiator on the driver's side. i connected the pressure tester stuff on the radiator gasket and couldn't get pressure to build up. i had to really lock down tight on the line to the reservoir to build pressure, and i didn't see any visible leaks, but it was losing pressure.
shouldn't i have been able to do the pressure test without blocking the line to the reservoir? i'd think that with the pressure test or the gasket or something it'd prevent any air blowback, but i don't know. this is my first time trying this

>>28561632Going by user submitted reported HTHS values from oil testers they are better than the regular manufacturers. If you actually needed the performance I would either use them or HPL.
>>28562049I have an SL550 so I want to treat it as nicely as possible if I can. What do you think about fuel additives and oil additives? Like Amsoil sells fuel additives for cleaning but I have also heard there are extra lubricants you can add to your oil.
>>28561990did they use a fucking scotchbrite pad or something?
they really shouldn't have.
>>28562056change the oil every 3k miles.
>>28561650doesn't matter. after 2 or 3 oil changes the new oil will have diluted the old oil quite a bit.
>>28562056>Fuel additivesYes. I mainly use Techron.
>Oil AdditivesNo
Any oil additives change the chemistry balance. All the minerals compete and fight against each other for different characteristics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAGT5inQScE
>>28562076Interesting. Well thanks. I guess that's fine then, Amsoil only sells fuel additives in addition to the numerous oils and fluids they sell, so I'll give them a shot next time I'm shopping for oil. Not like their stuff is super expensive, anyways.
>>28562059I changed my oil last after 6k miles, will I be okay?
>>28562081Also, if you want to make it easy just look for the manufacturer oil approvals. In my case, I have a BMW n52 engine so I mainly look for LL01 or LL04 approval. Some boutique or high end oils don't have approvals but say they meet or exceeds the specs.

>>28562188O shit. I wasnโt looking close enough. That blows.
>>28562119Thanks for the assistance.
Also, not to shill Amsoil any harder, but it looks like they even make firearm lubricant and cleaner, so they cover a lot of my bases.
>>28562316The only firearm lubricant you need is coomlube.
is it even worth rebuilding a CV axle? idk if it's even damaged, the boot is blown and it's squeaking but a new boot and a pile of grease could fix it idk
>>28562316I just used ballistol on two bike chains the other day and it fixed myriad problems with both bikes immediately, other than gear oils it's all probably safe cross purposes
>non-major brand gas station opens near me with ~10c cheaper gas (paying cash) than most places in my area
Are credit cards that expensive for businesses to offer as a payment option or is there a noticeable difference in gas quality between stations? I don't know anything about gas and I'm worried that cheaping out screw me over in some obscure way down the line
>>28562728If it just opened I would not worry about lack of tank maintenance and yeah, credit cards fuck the merchant pretty hard.
>>28562618I have had a lot of luck just ignoring cv problems for years on end. Really only heard of one totally crapping out, when every gear is neutral.
>>28538332 (OP)I have a 07 Suzuki Swift and I want to change the wheels from 15" (185/60/R15) to some other wheels I've found, 16" (185/55/R16), will they fit? They're both 4x100, do I need to measure wheel arch clearance or anything like that?
