Manufacturing those in China and selling them to the Chinese probably costs like 1/3 of what they'd pay in Europe.
Their German workers are paid better than doctors of medicine in many countries. Their agreements with the workers' union are so lengthy the book was split into multiple door-stopper volumes. I'm not sure if they're actually required to work.

To drive crossovers, apparently. Even for Americans, the mid/full size sedans from Ford (Taurus), Lincoln (Z), Cadillac (CT6), and Buick (Lacrosse) are all now China only. If that's not demoralization then I don't know what is.

Volkswagen used to be the premier choice of import cars in China because they were the first European entrant. It's similar to how Buick has brand cachet in China because it was the state car of China before Hongqi was made.

They were unironically the first cars other than Citroen sold in China
VW sent the plant from Westmoreland PA to Changchun PRC to build Mk2 Jettas and B2 Quantums/Passats jointly with FAW. The only reason VW is as powerful and large as it is today is because they put the Chinese on wheels. It's why a lot of mainlanders buy VWs and Audis and Porsches outside of China too.
