The W211 E-Class already had the option of ambient lighting, with configurable brightness settings in the cluster even - it was just mostly to control a subtle, ambient amber glow that you would get from the overhead consoles and in the front and rear footwells, not the $5.99 120" multicolor RGB LED strip laid across all the panels like it is now.
Most older BMW models ('90s-'00s at least) also had "ambient lighting" as well, with the ambient lighting consisting of a couple well-placed amber LEDs casting some subtle light on the interior surfaces. Even '00s Porsche Cayennes had an option for ambient lighting that "tucks" into the door panels similar to the W212s, it's just that like the other examples this one was subtle, and amber only.
Ambient lighting isn't the sole problem, the Germans obviously realized the benefits of having subtle amber/green lighting that doesn't negatively affect your eyesight and with the benefit of being able to see switchgear just a bit more clearly. The RGB purple glow wrapped around everything that you see now that looks like a gay disco is just retarded, on the other hand.
But it's what the buyers want, just like the touchscreens that Germans used to refuse to put in their cars in the '00s since they knew tactile feedback was better.
