How retarded am I
I've been entertaining the idea of buying an old Wrangler and swapping damn near all the parts out so it won't be unreliable. My goal is to make it as reliable and efficient as possible. I don't want a new one because there's an old model that has the dimensions I want (LJ model) so I want to keep this thing running forever, and with decent fuel economy for an offroader so probably a diesel swap. Is it even possible to swap all of the critical components out of a car, like replace all the engine and drivetrain components with Toyota parts or something similar in reliability? What would the cost be for such an endeavor?

Just get one with the 4.0 and it’ll be reliable without you needing to do anything.

if you're only buying a car to use the shell then you're either a funny car enthusiast or retarded

It does come with the 4.0 inline 6 which seems like a sin to swap, but with all the bad shit I hear about Jeep and the fact that it's a 20 year old vehicle, not sure how much untroubled life I can expect out of it. Should've specified that these models are 20 years old now.

Yes, I bought a new car and the forced safety features and other gayness completely turned me off new shit. I want to get a frame I can keep for life and just keep replacing components as needed. Not gonna put up with the garbage they're putting out now, and in time it'll be too late to buy a real vehicle and not an appliance.

90 percent of the modern "safety" features can be permanently disabled through the menu, but nobody reads the owner's manual so they just complain.
The remaining features that can't easily be turned off (at least not completely) are things like traction/stability control and ABS, but most sports or off-road cars let you turn it off with a button. Or at the very least an ABS delete/swap job that'll only cost you a couple hundred bucks

Just LS swap the thing. Cheap, reliable engine and it's been done a million times so you won't run into any issues that haven't been documented and solved already

Nope my Mazda has headlights permanently on, sends automated reports about my location and driving habits to Mazda Corp, and the anti collision braking turns itself on with every engine start and will detect cars in the lane next to you and slam on the brakes automatically. I'm not having it.

The 8 cylinder would be less efficient no? The engine I have in mind would be a Cummins 4bt or Hino 4cyl diesel engine. Hino is Toyota's commercial truck brand, I see used ones for sale with 500k miles on them so they have long lives. Probably harder to source with low mileage than a 4bt which can be bought brand new and ready to swap.

Get a VW TDi, tons of swaps have been made on jeeps so there are enough parts and documentation, You don't really need a big diesel engine on a small jeep.

Swap a 2.5 5 cyl so it sounds like a Huracan/R8

Might be too small of an interior, looking for something I can car camp in. The newer ones it looks like that's doable because all the seats fold flat like a Honda Element.

Jimnys are banned in fatmerica but I could build up an old Samurai, which looks cooler anyway. With the age and quality of those things it would definitely need all new components and has less of an aftermarket than the Wrangler. I'd end up basically doing the same thing as building out the Wrangler but more difficult.

I have a second question, what are the common problems with Jeeps? What components should I look into replacing before they break or be ready to replace when they break? It would be an 03-06 TJ/LJ with the 4.0

the amc 4.0 isn't what makes a jeep unreliable, it's all the other stuff. and it really depends on what you mean by "unreliable." you can drive one of those off a cliff and it will still get you home, but with a broken axle and spraying coolant, trans fluid and fuel everywhere. some may even call that the most reliable.

>big fatfuckmobile that keeps getting bigger every model year, already over 70" width, price bloated too and unreliable so enjoy paying out the ass for repairs
>small efficient offroader that actually fits on paths, reliable enough that you won't be writing 4 figure checks regularly

Am i gonna have engine or transmission issues? Sensors breaking? Wiring issues? Other dumb shit that needs to be fixed or is it just gonna run forever like Toyotas did 20 years ago?

I have a 92 YJ 4 cyl got an emissions test yesterday, I don't know how many years it has left in it, but it has been pretty reliable.

I rented a jeep compass a couple years ago when I had to go to Seattle on a work trip. Every fucking car that passed me on the highway made the super gay lane assist feature go off.
>Drive straight
>Not change lanes
>Random car drives next to me
>BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP JEEP BEEP FUCKING BLOWS BEEP GAY SAFETY FEATURE BEEP FUCKING BEEP
For two weeks.

These things have the worst head design I've ever seen.
Why are the intake and exhaust ports all on the same side?

Yes, yes and yes. Wiring especially, hope you're willing to reroute a new wiring harness. You drive a wrangler or XJ if you enjoy working on cars.
