Why aren't ramps like this more commonplace as a cheaper alternative to a lift?
Seems like they'd be perfect for jobs that don't require removing your wheels.

During Soviet times, many gas and service stations had a couple of these on their lot so you could do maintenance on your cars.

That looks more awkward and expensive than some jacks.
Anonymous No.28549061 >>28549076

Because you still need a method of lifting your car when you do require the wheels to come off. And if you already have that equipment why bother also getting a pair of big, awkward ramps that'll take up space in your shed or backyard or whatever.

You're crazy if you think lifting your car a few inches with jacks is in any way comparable to several feet with drive on ramps

Very few people have lifts in their home

Well it definitely doesn't cost electricity I'll give you that I guess. Still looks like it would require a grease pit.

Those ramps aren't that high, you can't stand beneath the car or even kneel without hunching substantially. If you're gonna work on your back anyway what is wrong with a jack and 4 jackstands? They take up way less storage space and you aren't losing much height anyway
Anonymous No.28549093 >>28549101 >>28549352

I've never been able to kneel under my car with a jack.

What good is kneeling when you're bent over double? How're you going to get anything done staring at the floor? Definitely not high enough to be worth it

I feel like you must never wrench if you don't see how having several feet under your vehicle would be beneficial.

The ramp as shown has maybe 2 feet over jackstands being generous
Anonymous No.28549125 >>28549159

Lets say 2 feet is right (it's not), you don't see how having 2 feet over the absolute maximum jackstands could provide would be useful?
Again, you don't wrench.

this is the real answer
they'd be too expensive to manufacture and sell and require tools most people don't have access to to make.
also they take up a lot of room
most people that have the money to buy something like this could just buy a budget lift
it's only really something feasible if you can make them yourself

Honestly senpai, I’d just build a working pit before this. At least you can easily cover a pit to walk/drive over it and not have these awkward ramps taking up space. Plus this is at such an odd height AND it needs some more triangles welded in since during the pivot all the weight is supported on that central point
I like the idea of quickjacks over this but they seem expensive for what they are.

A lift is superior to a grease pit in every way, for example when doing work that requires the transmission to be taken out in a standard RWD car.

you can get alot more use out of a lift, if you buy the ramps then need to do work that require a lift, then what? you do it the right way the first time, you dont have to cry about tire kickers on facebook and craigslist later when you need to sell the ramps.

Anonymous No.28550111 >>28550190
>>28550103
again, it's a height thing. quick jacks will raise your car like what, maybe a foot off the ground? vs the ~3 feet you'd get out of something like pic related. it's the difference of working on your back and having the option of kneeling under your car.
Also at $1000, save up a little more and get a 2nd hand lift which is infinitely superior.

I feel more confident that wooden cribbing is more sturdy than spindly metal stilts. As long as the wood cribbing is wide enough that sideways tugging on the car will not cause it to fall sideways, the cribbing would probably even withstand an earthquake.
