Let's put things in perspective. In 1964 the national average price of gas was $0.30. That's 3 silver dimes. Today those 3 dimes total up to $8.10.
To be fair, the minimum wage that year was also $1.25. So that's 5 quarters. That comes out to $33.50 per hour. So someone would have to work 0.24 hrs for 1 gallon of gas.
Today the national average is $3.15 and minimum wage is unofficially $15/hr. So that comes out to having to work 0.21 hrs to buy 1 gallon of gas.
