M5 comes with a V8 already, although BMW proved that the E46 is just as good with one when they made the M3 GTR. a LS would go nicely in either car. probably wouldn't even add any weight over the front wheels at all in the case of the M5.

The issue with the m3 seems to be subframes
The issue with the e39 seems to be rust
I dont have a strong opinion toward either platform, but im considering both because they have good chassis and are supported enough to be swapped without fabrication

you can deal with and combat rust. you can't really unfuck a subframe, at least not by any conventional means.

Why is the subframe on E46 bad anyway? what did BMW do? not add enough metal?

Probably the e39. The m62/s62 are both good but nothing really special and being German v8s they are little too complicated and expensive. E46 is fine with its m54/s54

I just think they drive and look nice, but I dont want to deal with the cost and complexity. So obviously the reasonable thing to do is dump 20k into one. Small block v8 is peak engine so that's what I'll be doing.
BMWs are not my first choice but they're one of a few platforms I like that are supported enough to be able to swap without fabrication

I agree they do look and drive nice. I will never own German again though after my experience with a 1999 e300td. If I had to do what you're doing I would definitely get an E36 or an E46 as it seems like those are going to have an eternal aftermarket.

Anonymous No.28550358
>>28550341
I've had my share of bad German car experiences, but I do appreciate the things that they get right like style, build quality and handling. On the otherhand I love the character, sound and power delivery of small blocks but I dont want the of the cars they came in for one reason or another, hence I've arrived at this weird place where I'm looking at e39s/e46s.
>>28550352
Yeah, if e39 I'd start with an i6 because of the steering box. You'd have to convert to a rack & pinion to swap it

Anonymous No.28550363

An early r129 or pic related would have unironically been my first choices, but without any aftermarket support the cost is just insane. Even if I could weld id rather have a professional do it. That's before considerations like needing a custom rack & pinion conversion, a custom harness, potentially custom headers, and then finding a diff/rear end setup that could handle the power.

E39s are better made than E46s so I'd put a big displacement NA LS in an E39 wagon. It would be a good idea too because M60s are gutless and suck, and S62s are cool but they're too expensive and a 6L+ LS would make more power anyway.

e39 wagon would be kino. the only marks against them is they seem more rust prone than e46s and dont look as nice, but they also dont seem to have subframe issues
I used to own an e39 and liked it quite a bit, but sold it because I got it for free and it had some rust
Anonymous No.28552735 >>28552744
>>28552723
I'm not sure where they rust because my BMW cutoff is E34, but I know E34s are more prone to rusting than E30s in some areas because they have dumb shit like molding on the bottom of the door. Every car has its problem areas.

>Every car has its problem areas.
truth. if it were up to me id choose an e24 to ruin but they seem atrocious for attracting rust, and ultimately my goal here is to be able to do a swap on my own with off the shelf parts
Anonymous No.28552751
>>28552744
I think for E24s the main issue is the rear end rusting out. Mine had rust around the tail lights and luckily it's a mostly hidden area so I was able to cut it out, form some new sheet metal, weld it in, and paint it with off the 2K that's made to match OE colors and you couldn't even tell without pulling the tail lights.

>MUH STEERING BOX!!!!1111
They are pretty good, WAY better than stock E30 steering which is a rack with a school bus ratio. Now if you put a Z3 rack in an E30 and compare that to an E34 of course that's way better, but E34 steering is perfectly fine for a full size sedan so E39 is probably as good or better.
