Why do you do a rolling stop?
When it says STOP you do a complete STOP

Rolling stops are extremely dangerous, reckless and in my opinion any driver who does a rolling stop should have their license taken away

>lemme just waste a few more seconds of my precious time on this earth
>lemme put more wear on my brakes and suspension by coming to a complete stop
>and also use more energy to accelerate again from that complete stop

The issue is that most stops should be yields but people would be too retarded to actually yield so they have to be forced to STOP. There's a roundabout near me that some boner thought needed stop signs at each entrance which completely voids the purpose of a roundabout. If visibility is the issue, and you have to actually be fully at the line (or even past it) to see what's coming then the real solution is to remove the foliage or bullshit signs or whatever is in the way.

>If there's any sign others are on the road you're merging onto
Stop.
>If I can see clearly in all directions and the road is empty
Roll through at the bottom of 2nd gear (~10mph). It's not a big deal.
>If there are visual obstructions
Try to roll it in 2nd but stop if i get too close and still cannot see well enough to clear.
>If it's in town and there could potentially be a cop hiding to farm the intersection
Complete stop.
...ICE cars are least efficient when starting from a complete stop (that's why hybids are a good idea, the battery is used for low speeds). Think about all the fuel and emissions we could save if "rolling when 100% clear" was the norm!

Stopping all the way wastes gas and is completely unnecessary. Maybe if you're geriatric and have the reflexes of a tortoise you could use the extra time to look around, but if I can ascertain that it's safe to go before the vehicle is fully stopped then I'm going.

The worst is when you're driving down a long street in a dense city that has stop signs on every crossroad. I usually just ignore them entirely because it's such a fucking hassle and takes forever to stop at every street just to let the ghosts drive by

They do this to mitigate speed demons but those pricks will just blast through anyway so it just ends up making traffic slower for everyone else.

Live amongst a bunch of vehicle owner/operators, very few drivers.
CYA has me coming to complete stops because these muppets can barely stay in their lane, forget about properly stopping. When in the absolute beater 5klb trugg, come to complete stop at 4 way, then proceed without caution as nobody stops at the 4 way. Watch the cross traffic stop sign runners panic when they nearly get their shit pushed in by 20 year old trugg.
1/4 of the vehicles around here are missing bumper covers or have the black coated replacements and like to play 4way stop chicken.

This is why speed limits are set by the 85th percentile rule and you're generally not picked out of a pack of cars that are moving at the same pace.

>if everyone is speeding, then the speed limit is too low. if everyone is doing a rolling stop, then it should be a yield sign instead of a stop sign
This assumes that people travel at some optimal speed independent of speed limits
In reality, whatever you set the speed limit, people will assume that's the "limit for bottom of the barrel retards" and add +10mph to it. Even if you set the limit at 90mph.
Anonymous No.28555916 [Report] >>28555923

>This assumes that people travel at some optimal speed independent of speed limits
people do this all the time. if there's no signposted limit they drive at whatever speed they feel most comfortable at. hell, like you say, people already do it with speed limit signs because they already feel that the current speed limit is too slow for where they are and what they're driving.
people drive more recklessly and take bigger risks when they get complacent, this is exactly what's happening in your scenario with the speed limit. when you make the environment unpredictable (no lane markings, close quarters and sharp corners where someone could dart out at any moment) that's when people tend to be more cautious. you're always going to get one or two fuckwits that try to ruin it for everyone but punishments/changes should be applied to those rather than everyone as a whole.

Eh this only works in one direction though.
If the speed limit is too slow, people will go faster
But if the speed limit is too high -- well no one ever thinks the speed limit is too high.
People will just always add 10mph to it.
Like i said, people know that some engineer used some reasoning to come up with the speed limit, and that its designed for grannies, therefore I know i can travel faster than it.
You could put a 90mph speed limit on a curvy mountain road and people would view 100 mph as the target. I dont think people actually know how fast they need to go...
And how can they? Speed limits arent for traveling in a straight predictable line, its about a sudden curve or stopping that some engineer knew about when he made the speed limit in the first place
Anonymous No.28555934 [Report] >>28555943 >>28556174
>>28555923
funny you mention that.
in tasmania, many of the roads outside the cities are signposted 100 kph. realistically, because of all the bends and curves, most people do around 80. this is really good design because a) people are driving at the speed they're most comfy at and b) people wanting to drive faster can effortlessly pass slower vehicles, especially on two lane roads where you really need to be able to pass someone quickly and safely
Anonymous No.28555943 [Report] >>28555953
>>28555934
Yeah it can work if there is some sort of agreement or culture in the first place that you shouldn't exceed the speed limit. But that likely isn't the case in america.
But now that you mention it even in america i've seen some 55mph limit twisty mountain roads where the road conditions werent even good... you would drive off the cliff even in a sports car if you tried to actually go 55 mph
So yes there are examples everywhere of speed limits being higher than what people drive but i think its the exception
simply raising the speed limit on a 65mph highway to 80mph, just because everyone is going 80mph, doesnt mean people won't go any faster
Anonymous No.28555952 [Report]
>>28554537 (OP)
I've gotten a ticket for that (which I never paid) so I usually fully stop, but if that'd impede reasonable traffic I don't.

>simply raising the speed limit on a 65mph highway to 80mph, just because everyone is going 80mph, doesnt mean people won't go any faster
honestly i feel like the only reason they aren't going any faster than they already are is because that'd be legally, rather than safely, pushing it. the cops know they can't do shit since everyone already does 15-20 over, but that one or two that are doing upwards of 30? easy pickings.
Anonymous No.28555957 [Report] >>28555975
>>28555953
Yep and that also brings up another good point that we havent considered
Cops INTENTIONALLY dont enforce speed limits of +10mph
Make the speed limits intentionally too slow so that everyone has to speed
That gives you the excuse to just pull over anyone anytime you want, just because they are speeding, to do other searches on them.
Same reason why they dont actually enforce front license plates. If they strictly enforced that, then everyone would just get a front license plate, and they wouldnt have any excuse to randomly pull people over.

Try pulling my other leg next time.

Pretty much everybody in the DFW area goes 1.5 times the posted speed limit, or at the very least 10-15 mph over when traffic is relatively sparse.
If there's decent traffic, though, the speed of traffic usually goes back to the speed limit.
If there's rain, or it just rained, people will drive cautiously slowly around corners and rarely even go the speed limit unless they have good tires and the road's straight.
If there's snow, then anybody going above 10 mph is a crazed madman.

I dunno where you're from, but your point has no basis in reality unless you're complaining about people driving fast on gentle banked turns on the highway, even though there's no more danger in doing so than going straight. And yes, 100 mph is totally reasonable on a highway with plenty of visibility and low traffic.
