For lurkers that don't know what caused this and are blaming Trump for the Audi cars, thousands Volkswagen Group car models (including Audi), were abandoned in California’s Mojave Desert following the infamous Dieselgate scandal. These cars were part of a massive buyback program after it was discovered that Volkswagen had installed emissions-cheating software—known as "defeat devices"—in millions of diesel vehicles worldwide.

So why are the cars there in the Mojave Desert?

As part of the 2015 DIESELGATE scandal agreement, Volkswagon agreed to repurchase or immediately fix cars possessed by the unfortunate scammed owners. Instead of immediately scrapping or repairing them, VW leased desert lots—like those in Mojave and Victorville—because the dry climate helps minimize corrosion.

And so cars sit there. Getting older. Anyone want a 2015 car sitting in the desert all this time?

Poor cars. They should have chained the execs who decided on the cheat software there instead.
Those people lied to millions of car buyers and have severely dishonored themselves. Their suffering should be multiplied by millions, too.

EVERYONE was cheating on emissions test - Daimler-Chrysler got caught too - nobody heard about that
everyone who sold diesels was doing the same thing
the emissions standards were unreasonable
and instead of the manufacturers saying to regulators - we cannot comply with these can you loosen them, they just ignored them and cheated
ALSO part of it was trying to avoid having to put urea in the tanks which:
wasn't something earlier diesels required
isn't cheap
and has to be done fairly often ~ 7000 mi more if you tow

the cheat modes allowed the diesels to run without urea

They should have chained the regulators who thought the diesel regulations were reasonable and could actually be profitably followed by manufacturers - the regulations were too strict - that was the issue

this is the strangest thing to me. everyone was cheating on the tests - but not once was it ever considered that perhaps the demands were simply unreasonable. or maybe it was considered, and whomever brought it up threatened with demotion or dismissal for such ridiculous thinking

>but not once was it ever considered that perhaps the demands were simply unreasonable
oh no it was they HAD to have known but there was so much pressure to be "reducing emissions" which is silly because light trucks let alone commercial trucks never were held to these emissions standards - its like they wanted to kill diesel + diesel never sold a lot because it's taxed way more than gasoline is - whereas (I think) the situation is the opposite in Europe.

>or maybe it was considered, and whomever brought it up threatened with demotion or dismissal for such ridiculous thinking
sounds about right
would be fascinating to know the real story - im sure someone has an unspoken motive that explains the events but um
EVERYONE WAS CHEATING - I cannot stress that enough

its really sad VW just gave up on cars after it.

but you missed the bit where i said that everyone was cheating on the tests, VW was just the biggest fish.
i feel bad if you just assume kikery first thing right off the bat, because all i want is easy to service engines that don't have a gazillion things on them for the sole purpose of eking out 0.01 mpg that can fuck up and force limp mode despite it otherwise running perfectly fine.

they were unreasonable by design.
>first effectively outlaw cheap, efficient diesels
>next, make gasoline cars prohibitively expensive / complicated to comply with emissions
>now EVs suddenly look like a better value proposition (because otherwise they're dogshit)
>now that public opinion is mostly on your side, outlaw any remaining ICE vehicle as "dirty" and now every car on the road can be controlled centrally by your masters, effectively giving them total control over your travel by plane, train, or automobile.
Bringing back serfdom and permission slips is their goal.

Didn't miss the kindergarten "but maam they were also doing it". Just don't care. The others can also go bankrupt if they get caught.
>all i want is easy to service engines that don't have a gazillion things on them for the sole purpose of eking out 0.01 mpg that can fuck up and force limp mode despite it otherwise running perfectly fine
And most people don't enjoy breathing the smog. Also the whole "limp mode" is more profitable for carmakers, so they'll push it regardless of efficiency. Pic unrelated because I'm getting tired of "upload failed xD".

you're completely missing my point. if there is a law in place and everyone is breaking or ignoring it that is absolutely something you should care about because it's a symptom of a bigger issue that should be looked into instead of dismissing it with such a simplistic outlook

everyone rich tries to break tax laws or dodge them in every way they can. the only reason poorfags don't is because they can't. i don't think the response is to just cut taxes for the rich entirely. it just means the people doing it should be punished when they're caught, like VAG.

small car makers often get exempt from emissions laws because they don't make as many cars. the response to just cut emissions regs is also simplistic. whereas in an ideal world you'd approach it differently than just making restrictions tighter every year without considering plateauing technologies and reductions in gains, amongst other things.

emissions standards are gay and retarded (hence why literally every manufacturer cheats around them). In that case they're cheating to give people a better car rather than a gay emissions cucked one. The retards at the EPA should have to repair all the cars and return them to VW.

>and now every car on the road can be controlled centrally by your masters
omfg stfu with this stupidity

whether or not a car is "controlled centrally" or whatever is entirely orthogonal to it being an ICE or EV
an ICE ECU can prevent ignition just as easily as an EV ECU can prevent motor activation.
and the same thing goes for DRM and subscription features and all the other shit in nucars.

if anything, EVs are *less* controllable, by virtue of being simpler, and hence easier to write your own control code for them. PID controllers and duty cycles are much easier to wrap your head around than volumetric efficiency and ignition timing.
