Why are built LS engines so fucking expensive?
Anything 650+ horsepower Naturally Aspirated
Is $15,000+
Fuck that's a lot for a single engine.

LS tax? they have a certain reputation as being the end all be all of swap engines.

That's why. Boosted 4.8/5.3 would hit 650bhp ezpz and for 1/3-1/2 the cost.

Boosted engines suck for road racing though.
Power isn't linear.
Weights way more
More complex
Harder to cool
Power is always laggy

Have you looked at any of the other 650+hp NA crate engine options out there? Good luck finding anything better or cheaper. If you want a cheap NA race ready engine then you better learn how to turn a wrench or stfu.

$15k for a built ls is really not a lot sounds like you need to find some bootstraps to pull yourself up by

LS engines are the epitome of "pick two: cheap, powerful, reliable".
So to make high power reliably the engine needs a full build.

If the car's brakes fit under 15s there's really no reason to go bigger. The motor probably isn't the stock choked 305.

My boosted miata has a flatter torque curve than a NA one.

Just throw in a 632 Big Block. Even with 50hp/l you're ballin'

get a gm 3800 and metal upper intake manifold from a junk yard for like 300 bucks, nice size turbo and youve got 500hp for like 2-3k

Okay now price out a naturally aspirated engine of similar power that isn't an ls. I'm serious, do it.

I stopped going to car shows in the early 2000s because it as just too painful to see all the cars swapped with shitty LS engines it must be even worse now.

The question was about the cost of high performance NA engines, not their suitability for an application.
