Guys in 10 days I'm flying to Minnesota to buy a 1978 GS1000 and ride it back to North Carolina. I'm excited. This is like my eighth motorcycle but legitimately might be the first one that I keep for many years if not the rest of my riding career. I've had a bunch and narrowed down exactly what I like. And don't worry your pearls are safe, I'm not going to cut it up into a cafe racer. The GS bikes don't cafe well with the height of the triple tree versus the tank.

Okay folks one question. What's makes a better daily commuter? Bagger vs ADV. 50/50 burbs, highway time over a 40 minute drive.
Only buying used.
I'm thinking adv just so I can hop a curb and u turn out of ass fuck traffic

They're both pretty good I would imagine. ADV are pretty tall and heavy, so they're slightly more cumbersome at slow speeds, heavy traffic, small roads, etc. Baggers have that cruiser riding position that I frankly just can't get used to. I like my feet under me not in front.

Find an ADV that has had a relatively recent redesign, and go for the prior model with luggage already equipped.

I can't remember if there was a year split in the exhausts but I don't think there was. You should be fine.
I bought techspec tank grips. Had to heat gun mould them in place but they've stuck there fine for 2 years now.
After doing the cat delete, ECU tune, etc. All of that required pulling the header out.... I'm now thinking of pulling the header back off and modifying my header to be a single pipe. I like the look of the dual pipes, but the accessibility sucks for chain maintenance. I should have just done it 5 months ago when I had everything apart.

300-500cc bikes are not starter bikes.
They're an entire artificial class of motorcycles made solely to conform to EU regulations. Before that a middleweight 600cc+ motorcycle was considered perfectly adequate to start on.
I never even touched a motorcycle before I started to ride and had no issue getting a 650 as a first bike.
And because they're cucked by EU regulations those 300-500cc bikes aren't even light enough to be interesting. They're made for misinformed buyers and occasionally to get sold as high end bikes in third world markets.

CC is a meme and a nobike way to determine power for the most part.

And also I'm pretty sure the small displacement screamers were made because of JAPANESE tiered licensing.

My current bike is a 90s CB500 for what it's worth because it was the cheapest running bike I could find.
My post was a general rant about this class of motorcycles being characterized as 'beginner bikes' despite having no particular qualities as beginner bikes.

GS are basically immortal though I prefer the later (rectangular rocker box ends) because they use a screw and locknut for valve adjustment but you may never have to perform one so it would not concern me. Shims for yours are easy to find. Get the factory service manual if available but aftermarket will do.

https://www.thegsresources.com/ is easily the best GS site.

I installed a Dynojet kit on my (EPA lean as usual) carbs and though it's more hassle than pods it's best to keep the stock airbox. I put 30K miles on my '81 750E (engines swap but I didn't feel like tracking down a donor 1000).

I got mine with ~30K miles for 500 bucks (owner thought the top end was trashed because the carbs were dirty so I kept my mouth shut) and other than chain, sprockets and tires it needed nothing. They're a true ride-it-for-life machine if you don't have ghay GP race fantasies and work fine cross-country.

ADV. Baggers are bulky, heavy and even for this boomer pointless (I use G.I. crew bags and duffle bags which make nice back rests).

40 minutes is nothing so lighter and agile is quite enjoyable. I commuted on a Honda 250 which was perfect for Jersey City traffic (and had no problem crossing medians etc).

Heavy ADV are mostly for posers like the people who never take their trucks off-road but are generally easier to pick up than baggers. I don't get buying the most pigfat garbage barges since I've been cross-country on much lighter bikes.

Eat fruit and veggies. I eat a lot of canned fruit (in water or juice) and am on opiate pain meds and diuretic heart meds but shit at least daily without issue. I keep frozen Gatorade bottles of water in my pack or wear my Camelbak in hot weather when riding.

It's just a thumb so no need for it to work a clutch.

When I mangle a digit I replace the dressing then cover it with electrical tape. A strip of clean paper towel works as a dressing.
If sticking is a risk slap some Bacitracin on the wound then dress than wrap. You can leave a glove on the left hand to protect the injury. Bandaids a shit.

>how can I do this without any experience? do I just go to a shop and ask to sweep the floors and change oil?

Which country do you live in? That's relevant. I've been a mechanic for longer than I've held a drivers license but I made sure not to make wrenching bikes or cars a career. If you like to wrench and not starve to death join the Air Force (fixing drones, airlifters, fighters, helos or anything that flies) and ignore everything whiners whine about since everyone who leaves in your AFSC makes your promotion track easier. Ignore everything /k/ says because they're mostly young and dumb enough to think the Army is an acceptable career in other than unicorn specialties.

Your job is for money so you can buy land and lodging which makes the armed forces ideal due to air bases located where you have room to ride and cheap land. I planned my entire life for maximum financial freedom which fucking demands early retirement so you can still enjoy life for a while before age destroys everything and everyone you love. Working until 65 is fucking stupid so do whatever you must to win. I bought rural land zoned agricultural with cheap old homes I renovated. When I want another shop I order another High Cube one-trip container, hang a dehumidifier inside (power and light come after) and all my motorbikes and tools live free of dust and dirt daubers.

Freedom depends on location so if you enjoy riding avoid high COL areas completely.
Those places tend to have independent bike shops. I proved myself early and rented from my shop owner/mentor for several years before buying land then part-timed for fun. I've done that with cars too to expand my skills.

You are wildly unlikely to make a good living as a motorcycle or car mechanic (the car guys flee in droves for better jobs) but learning to wrench pays off stunningly well in DIY everything. I suggest taking a community college auto shop course as a basis for everything else.

Inflation, falling customer base, and Infiniti getting rid of their sedan line up and going solely into the SUV market took most of the pay raise I got 3 years ago. Shit sucks and I'm looking for an off ramp to something else as soon as my company lease car expires next year. Something still in this field but different.

Bad excuse. You want a VFR, just because.

The DRZ I posted can hit 60 in 5 seconds and tops out around 100. It's simple to work on and gets decent fuel economy. It's not going to weigh 600lbs off-road.

DR650 would also be alright, but since you want to be a pavement princess and sleep in hotels/couch surf, go ahead and get your land yacht. A Viffer with cases would be a great bike to tour with if you had the money for a hotel every night.

Not all plastic is created equal. The OEM one has some sort of standard before it can be sold, otherwise people would sue the fuck out of them for a product that fails from intended use. The 40 dollar one is likely injection molded based on the cheapest stuff they can get their hands on from a company that won't exist in a week anyways.

Where do you live where you need to be doing 110mph to escape from the Mad Max boogieman, anon? This sounds like your own personal autism to me. Just slow down or pull off if someone is being weird? I don't get it. It's not like you're going to be doing those speeds as a nomad with a house on the back of your bike.

Southern California, doing the speed limit gets people swerving dangerously around you. I had to drive my truck tonight and got honked at once and swerved around three different times doing 60mph in the right lane
> I'm a drifter, lets ride all over the country, exploring what's out there by using the wonderful Interstate!

How much can you get around avoiding interstates when you go from state to state? Not trying to be sarcastic just a genuine question. Iโ€™ve only had a license for 5 years so a majority of my time on the road has been strictly commuting and going from city to city on interstates and backroads when itโ€™s feasible.

I've done the Scooter Cannonball on a 150 scooter starting in Orange County, up to Seaside Oregon, and then across multiple states to end in South Padre Island, TX. Once again, I think this is just an autism thing and you're overthinking this.

Ignore all the roads on here that are green, those are interstates. Everything else is the highways that existed before and all go through cities and have actual sights to see and shit on them. Many of them are also amazing and fun to ride.

Watch out though small towns on highways have assholes who will pull you over for having out of state tags because they have speeding ticket quotas.

Thatโ€™s pretty cool did you ever post about that or is there somewhere I can read about it. I know thereโ€™s documentaries on that kinda thing but I think individual accounts are more fun to read. I also like your setup
> Once again, I think this is just an autism thing and you're overthinking this.
> Ok, so what? People passed you, why does that upset you? Because you're used to passing everyone at 100mph on the interstate, or?
I donโ€™t think Iโ€™m not paranoid and that my fears are rather unfounded (afterall Iโ€™ve done plenty of miles like this and not had any incidents) but I find it a much calmer ride when I donโ€™t have to live with my eyes in my mirrors 24/7. And itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m getting passed itโ€™s that Iโ€™m getting passed in erratic ways, like a rav4 slamming the brakes right behind me before gassing it past me at a 30mph speed differential or a civic cutting past me in my lane to make their exit. Ultimately nothing happens but itโ€™s enough to give me a frown for the next couple miles.
> You can literally go anywhere without exceeding 55mph if the interstate scares you so much, anon. 'Avoid Highways' in Google Maps.
My biggest issue with this has always been that it just puts me on shitty endless intersection stroads but I suppose thatโ€™s just cause Iโ€™m in a major city

once rode my bike 3 hours away for a craigslist ad that was selling yoshimura socks for $5. As cheesy as this sounds, it wasnt about the socks, it was about the ride. I had a nice talk with the seller, then another biker came up since I was all geared up, and turned out those two guys were acquaintances, but they didnt know they both rode bikes, and the would be 5 minute exchange for yoshimura socks would turn in to 40 minutes of bike talk between 3 of us. Trip cost me maybe $100 because of breakfast, lunch, gas, and the $5 socks. Fond memory.

ADV is made for off-road. Baggers are great if you're going to make it a replacement for your car, but you have to know how to ride one effectively.
I'm talking the Bike Police tests that specifically filter people who can't turn it in the space of a parking lot effective.

ADV is nimbler, cheaper, lighter, and easier to master compared to say, a Gold Wing

My last tank was 30.06mpg. And because the Motor Company put a ridiculously small tank on it with no gauge and no reserve I'm stopping every 60-70 miles to put fuel in it when the low fuel light comes on.

I['m one of the XT250 fags that post in this thread and my tank is 2.5 gallons, fuel light comes on at .8 gallons because of course it does.
just carry a fuel bottle on you. then you can put a piece of tape over the 'low fuel' light.

Harley boomers hate on v-rods because it's got a liquid cooled engine co-developed with Porsche and it doesn't look like a 1960s electra glide. They hate on the new Sportys for being liquid cooled and on the pan-am for being a liquid cooled adv bike. I've put quite a bit of miles on a v-rod and liked it.
>v-max
You could also look at the v-4 Yamaha venture, same v-max engine but a more relaxed seating position. Dad had an 87 venture royale he loved, when it finally got totaled from hitting a deer it was at 110k miles

Generally in the west we have two main shapes of helmet: the oval-head shape (for example AGV), and round-head shape (for example Shoei). If you have pressure points on your temples, it could be you are wearing an oval-head shape helmet as a round head, while if you have a pressure point on your forehead, it could mean you wear a round head helmet as an oval-head. Disregarding that, if you do this >>28559811 your head should stay fixed to the liner but the liner moves a bit in the helmet. another test you can do (it is easier if someone else does it) is to push the back of your helmet and try to put your middle and index finger between the helmet and your forehead. If you can just jam the first/two phalanges between them it is usually fine. The fit of the helmet will get looser over time so it is advised to buy a helmet that is a pretty snug fit. Having a snug helmet is fine, having pressure points on the forehead, temples or back of the head is not.
