I reviewed Nebraska's duty to retreat law, it specifies that one must retreat *if* one is able to do so safely, and "safely" includes a "reasonable man" clause. This means if you see Cracktavious and his homeboys down the road, and they start walking toward you and yelling that you in the wrong hood while you're getting out of your car, then by all means you need to flee (ideally by driving away). However, if same group runs up on you while you're in a blind hallway in an apartment complex while you're bringing lo mein to Cracktavious' baby mama, you can start blasting. Basically if a normal person (not a cop, not a lawyer, not a judge dredd wannabe) would feel like their life was in danger, you can legally use lethal force without running away. If your surroundings prevent escape, shoot. If you are outnumbered and in close quarters (anything under 10 yards away), shoot. If someone has hands on you, shoot. Get a body cam, get dash and rear deck cams. These can go a long way both as deterrents and in court.
