Modern Route 66 Trip
What are the dos and don'ts? And what's it like to do it in 2008+17?

In 3 months I'll be doing a Route 66 Trip. Starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, and then back again. A little impromptu as I just found out I'll have the time and money to do it.
I'll also be doing it on a motorcycle, my Grandpa's 06 Road King, so that adds another layer of planning.

Who here has done it recently or in general? What are all the places to hit (especially outside of the major landmarks and attractions)? What should I prep for the trip (I've done long motorcycle trips, but never through multiple climates and biomes or by myself)? What should I expect?

disappointment. done a handful of west coast trips that follow close to the 66 rt. its the ruins of americana. so many places with cool looking but crumbling facades. not any different from driving through a small town everyone left.
>towns not by the railroad line died
>towns not on the HW system died
>towns bypassed by the interstate died
it will make you do a lot of thinking

personally i wouldn't restrict a trip to one road just because there's so much to see/better routes outside of 66
do what you want rather than keeping to one road

its not "really" 66 but it kinda is 66 but there's sorta a version of it running from wash dc to weston wv that's signed 48/55 and its quite scenic - the bit west of I-81 anyways
there's an "old" and a new version for the part between wardensville and davis wv

I expect to see this. I'm from the Rust Belt and it's already something I've seen East of the Mississippi.
>>28562193
I get that, but I've done trips out west on the modern interstates (in a car) many times already. This is more of a memorial thing for my Grandpa and his best friend who did it in the 60s and 70s, and always talked about doing it again, but never did.
>>28562195
I'm familiar with the "old" designation on old highways, hell everyone is surrounded by them, and I know it's not exactly the same as it was 100, 50, or even 20 years ago, but it's what we have left.
>>28562213
I have now since I started researching it. Getting quite a few which is pretty annoying, but I wasn't before this and this is something that has been in the back of mind for a long, long time.
>>28562228
I already have many times because I have family in San Diego. I planned on making a detour towards them once I reach Santa Monica anyway.

When you are in the shithole known as Oklahomo, there are some good food recs I do have: Clanton's Cafe in Vinita, OK, Bill's Jumbo Burgers or Freddie's Hamburgers(NOT the chain) in Tulsa, OK, Butcher BBQ Stand in Wellston, OK Nic's Grill in OKC. There is another bbq joint in Clinton, OK, but I can't remember it's name. All of these within a mile or less of Route 66 in their respective towns.

the movie Cars pretty accurately describes most of Arizona. theres a lot of burnt out shit that’s mostly abandoned. but its cool to see, at least in the places where things are still sort of lively.
be careful driving through Kingman. a lot of vagrants move through Kingman on their way to LA. though, most of the things to do will be in the Kingman area
some recommendations:
- Delgadillos and the OK Saloon in Seligman are both good places to stop
- theres a lot of nothing basically from Seligman to peach springs, then peach springs to Kingman. buckle up because this part of the drive is extremely boring
- Mr D’z Diner in Kingman has great burgers in a 1950s setting
- there are two museums, one in Williams off I40, one in Kingman at the old powerhouse. both are worth seeing
- the original route runs through Oatman, which is a super neat little western boomtown. this part of route 66 is super fun to drive, because it mostly follows the mountain pass and has a lot of twisties
- in the 1960s, they rerouted route 66 further south through Yucca, AZ. this route follows I40 now, and will take you to Needles, CA. Yucca doesn’t have much, except for Chrysler’s hot weather test facility, and a giant golf ball that’s alien themed.
- just before california, where the Oatman stretch dumps you out, there’s a sweet bar called topock 66. a lot of people used to take their boats up the river to party there, it used to be pretty cool but havent been there in a few years.

Not a burger but supposedly route 66 is one of the least /o/ roads to take these days. Not very interesting to drive.

Ah, yes. Because the modern interstate is an enthusiasts paradise.

Why do you assume that is, in any way, what that anon meant? Route 66 was just a convenience road before the interstate was made and became more convenient. It's not meant to be particularly scenic or take you anywhere particularly interesting, it's just more of a historical artifact. Look at something like Butler maps if you want an example of scenic/interesting routes.

I once did 66 to west bound. Got to california and ended up being detained and searched because I had an apple on my passenger seat. They went through my entire car educating me on how fruits are dangerous to travel with cross-state lines.

Do it in a covered wagon or stfu pussy. It's literally just a long drive with plenty of shelter, resources, and refreshments along the way. Worst thing that could happen is your back might get stiff.

It's done as a de-facto way to search people's vehicles coming into the state. California is totalitarian as fuck, if they could they would mandate a search before any entry. Fucking nanny state scared of guns and racist literature, but would gladly let any illegal immigrants through because it's an immigrant sanctuary state.
