I want to disable my EGR but I want to just put a piece of sheet steel in between the valve and intake rather than delete it so it still looks legit in the (extremely unlikely) event it is inspected. What is the best way to seal it so it won't leak exhaust or vacuum? It's an old vehicle so it doesn't have an EGR cooler, it's just piped straight out of the manifold to the valve attached right to the intake.

You go to the dealership when there's a crack in the engine block, your mechanic refuses to do a rebuild, and you can't find any acceptable replacement engines yourself.
All you need for 99 percent of maintenance/repair work is a hydraulic jack, a pair of jack stands, a ratchet wrench set, and the materials for your specific job. You can get all that for less than 400 bucks, and after your first job you'll be paying $20-100 for materials on jobs that'd cost you $300-1000 at the mechanic

I kissed a curb on my driver's side because some retard decided to slow down and pull off to the side when there wasn't a turn, so checked all my wheels when I arrived home. However, I kissed the curb on my drivers side and this Pic is my front passengers side so it's been there for a while. My pressure was the fine on all tires but gonna check it again in the morning. This is fine for a 1k mile road trip through right? The sticky for second hand cars says max mileage for most of their recommendations is 200k mi or so. Is that reasonable/realistic?
I deal in kilometres but I think looking and second hand stuff I'd be wary of getting anything much more than 200-250k kms or so (200k mi = 320k kms). I've had cars that have gone past 300kms with room to spare but I don't think I'd want to buy something starting that high (depending on price obviously).
Anonymous No.28566094
Is there much difference in build quality/durability for different toyota models from the mid-late 2000s? Need a new, durable second hand car and that's what I'm looking at- say corolla, camry, aurion, that kind of range. I hear corollas are overpriced but don't know much more details than that.
Anonymous No.28566099 >>28566173
>>28566093
The sticky is almost 5 years old at this point, rest assured that it's outdated.
200k is also the max odo reading "depending on condition", e.g. a single owner car that went to the dealership at regular intervals for the entirety of those 200k miles and is known to have an engine/transmission that'll last 300k+ with basic maintenance should be fine. If it's clearly been driven hard or not looked after particularly well then you should obviously lower your expectations and max mileage.
Also, $5k was a low price limit even 5 years ago so you'd have to make some concessions in terms of potential issues anyway

What's the deal with these? I get that it screws the piston back into the caliper to put new pads on, but why does the piston screw at all? Aren't hydraulic brakes supposed to be self adjusting? How does the piston get unscrewed, am I supposed to go in there now and then and unscrew it a little? What happens if I never screw it at all and let the piston take up the slack? shitty cheap version of a brake caliper tool set.

to adjust for the parking brake/emergency brake
>Aren't hydraulic brakes supposed to be self adjusting?
yes, but that's not related to brake piston being twist type

by using the brakes
>am I supposed to go in there now and then and unscrew it a little?
If you are changing the brake pads you will need to "screw" it down fully
>What happens if I never screw it at all and let the piston take up the slack?
then you won't be able to fit new brake pads

How does that work? It turns one way when you push the brake and the other when you release? Is it part of the piston or a separate mechanism?

>Is it part of the piston or a separate mechanism?
depends on the car but commonly it is part of the piston assembly (parking brake thrust screw in picrel)
>maybe that's a different kind of brake
typically only the rear brakes are twist type pistons (since parking brake activates the rears usually). Like other anon said it's actually more of a newer car thing.

I found a better explanation on some boomer forum
> The piston does not rotate. Instead, there is a worm-screw attached to the piston, and THAT does the rotating. There is a strong spring, held in by a snap-ring, that keeps the screw seated against the rear face of the caliper bore (actually against a movable plate that's inside there). There are bearings that allow the screw to turn even though there is spring-pressure against it.

>When you step on the brake pedal, these things happen:
>1) hydraulic force acting on the piston pushes the piston forwards, pulling the worm-screw with it;
>2) the spring-pressure opposes the piston's direction; the worm-screw rotates against the spring-pressure, backing out of the piston. This is what provides the adjustment for pad-wear. This is also the reason you need to screw the piston in again, to undo all the backing-out that the screw has been doing.

>The parking brake acts on a movable plate that is BEHIND the screw. As this plate is shoved forwards by the mechanical parking-brake linkage, it pushes on the back of the screw and pushes everything forwards. The screw cannot rotate back into the piston because it is working against the mechanical disadvantage created by the angle of the screw threads, plus it's sitting against the movable plate.

So basically, the piston doesn't rotate when you hit the brakes, there's some internal shit that rotates and you have to turn the piston yourself to undo the rotating that it did on its own

The piston doesn't turn, which is not "pretty much" the same as the piston turning. If the piston was supposed to turn there would be a problem, because it mates with pins on the pads that prevent it from turning.

You had to jb weld the bronze bushing in but once all done, the shifts were very crisp and there was absolutely no slop at all.

Hey all, I'm gonna be doing a coolant drain and fill soon. My car's setup doesn't have an open radiator, it's all done via the expansion tank and a few drain plugs that would require a good amount of disassembly sans the petcock on the bottom of the radiator. Do you think I'd be able to get away with just draining and filling the system over time rather than doing a dedicated flush? I had a coolant exchange done 4 years ago and haven't had any loss of coolant at all, it still looks bright orange as well with no deposits in the expansion tank. It seems much easier to just replace what I drain out and do that a few times, even if I use more coolant in the long run, than run a bunch of distilled water through the system, cycling it around, and guessing how much coolant I have to add to keep the 50/50 coolant water ratio. I know it's lazy but everyone who's done it on my model of car agrees it's a massive pain in the ass to do it the traditional way, and I'm gonna be up under my car a few times in the next few months to grind and spraypaint rust, change the oil, do the brakes, etc doing it this way I'm cycling through only coolant, draining out old coolant, don't have to worry about making sure any flushing agent/water is all out of the system.

Is it a good deal? What am I getting into, maintenance, parts and reliability wise? Grabbed this engine core from the salvage yard today for that 4.0 rebuild I keep asking questions for. 400 with delivery, if it's cracked he said I can come pull another free. I know the mounting hardware to stick this into my 91 I'll have to use the old brackets. are there any other differences on the 4.0 if it's in a grand cherokee? The block is a 53020569 cast and the head is NOT an 0331 but I can't remember what it was. The coolant was clean green, the inside was only very minor surface dusting in the spots it had rust. I didn't spot anything in the oil or coolant, the water pump looked brand new so I'm jumpy, but I've seen no signs of headgasket failure.

2 questions, are there any common signs that an engine died to headgasket/overheating that might not be common knowledge? And second, when taking an engine off an automatic to put on a manual is there anything I could fuck up horribly? Thanks

If you stop at a sign with a "stop line" the white line on the ground, stop first behind the line where you can see it then ease up to it slowly. All the while looking left and right obviously for the instructor, you don't have to go super hard but make sure they see you checking. If a stop sign doesn't have a stop line make sure your stop is before the sign would be parallel with the front of your car, they love that shit. They also love slow, gradual driving. I wired in new brake lights, an LED 1157 replacing a previous LED 1157 on my motorcycle. Runners work, brake light works, great. After activating the brake lights, the light turns *off* for a second, then slowly comes back on. This is both when it turns from the low or to the high again. No matter what, it has a slow fade on after activation. Anyone ever had this? I'm replacing a 1157 with an 1157 which didn't have this issue. I'm suspecting a bad ground, but my auto parts store isn't open yet for me to get ring terminals. Riding the s.o.b from Vegas to Buffalo in a week so I'd like my brake lights to work.

Cheers guys. You made me feel like a lout for not going to check, so I went back at the harness. The punchline - it's because of the turn signals I converted to brake lights being from a 2022+ model year Harley, and they come with the delay baked into the actual unit. Turns out I need one with 16g wiring and butt connectors and rather then the 18g with-a-little-multipin like the ones I got at the swap meet and buggered onto my '00 Kawi. The harness is actually working as intended - I had never seen this because I'm currently spoofing a turn signal with a slow-fade on to work as my brake lights. Thanks for not letting me be lazy. I like these stupid brake lights, bright as shit (these are the runners, not even the damn brights, and it overexposed my phone something fierce.)

The only things I can think of are:
In about 1996, the block was redesigned. The only major difference is that the wrist pins in the pistons changed location, and thus the pistons from 1995 and before are not compatible (I think?) with 1996+ engines. All other major parts are interchangeable.
At some point, they went to a distributorless ignition, and changed the distributor to essentially a cam sensor (I believe this was around the 2000's, but not sure). They are interchangeable unless you swap computers / harnesses.
Also around the 2000's mark, they switched from a log intake manifold to a horseshoe shaped one. They are interchangable, and it's argued that the horseshoe one is a very mild performance boost.

Everything else should interchange.

I *assume* I should split the single channel from the radio into two channels to feed the amp, then run those two channels to each speaker individually, as displayed on the right side? Or is the left side's way of doing things still acceptable? The 2 speakers I'm potentially about to buy are 4ohm for what that's worth.

I changed the headgasket and got a new radiator, so i had to bleed the air aswell. Airpockets just mess up the circulation of coolant i think.

How to bleed it correctly depends on what is the highest point. Some cars like mine also have a bleed valve but i also bled it from the radiator, i used a bottle with the neck in the rad and then ductape, then revv it, air bubbles go out but also coolant wants to come out, thats why you use the plastic 1,5 lite bottle that has the bottom cut out, so the coolant can jump up when you rev to let the air out, and then it drops back in the radiator.

Its a thing

I'm replacing my old cat-less car with a Infiniti QX80 and found some Aussie company selling secondary cat delete pipes for like $400 shipped to the US. The primary cats are built in to the headers and I don't think there is any easy way for them to get cut out.

So for the secondary cat deletes, will a spacer on the rear O2 sensor work to prevent a MIL light from coming on? Do I need a spacer with a small amount of catalyst? Will the ECU know I'm trying to jew it, and be forced to spend the money on O2 sensor simulators?

The only vehicle inspections we have here are OBD2 based ones which just check if your MIL light is on, and they even have self serve kiosks now, so its not like anyone from the government will ever actually look at my exhaust.

Get a couple cheap spark plug nonfoulers in the right thread from vatozone and drill them out, the spacing should be enough to trick the ECU, i've done this successfully with cars as new as a 2008, ymmv on anything newer. Here’s the scenario.

Jag Dealer has a new 2025 SVR on the lot for 200 days. 2026 are out but no real difference from the 2025. It has an MSRP of 102K. They have not discounted it on any site in those 200 days.

What are the chances I can get them to sell it out the door for ~90K? They would have to sell it for about 82K. Jag looks to be offering 2.9% 60 / 3.4% 72 on new 2025, so I would take one of those with like 40 down.

Would I be wasting my time?

These are just washers, there's not much pressure in them. Regular pressure washer can also operate from a bucket, but it needs an electric socket and 1-2 kW of power.

Automatic car washes suck balls. They will never get nearly as clean as a simple bucket of soap with a wash mitt and a chamois/drying towel. Not even close. You don't even need to use a pressure washer unless the car is severely neglected.

>tips
make sure to load the suspension before you put the final torque on everything. use a torque wrench on every bolt/nut. be ready to use a torch, sledgehammer, and impact esp if in the rustbelt. Might be a good idea to replace the bolts and nuts (quality grade 10.9+ fasteners preferably from a dealership) while you're doing it as the old ones can get pretty torn up if the suspension is rusty.

fluid pump circulating the fluid in your autotragic slushbox create a very slight amount of movement in the torque converter, not enough to move the car, but sometimes enough to rotate the wheels slowly if unloaded.

probably 100%, they can't give away this globohomo tranny bullshit now, their sales are down like 90%
>Jag looks to be offering 2.9% 60 / 3.4% 72
They're going to jack up the price of the car to give you that rate, if you don't have $90k+ in cash to plunk down, you need to find a car you can afford

I’d like some suggestions on a used vehicle with a hard 4K budget that has enough space for a six three guy to live in/lay down in. Thinking van trugg or SUV. Ideally durable and if something does break, it should be simple enough that a retard with a manual and youtube can either fix it or at least limp it to a repair shop. no i am not larping. any advice appreciated, thank you.

Traction control only cares about rolling radius, so as long as you keep that roughly the same as what you had before, you should be fine. Width is virtually irrelevant.

I'm going to try using anti-chip paint on the underside/sill area of a car. I can see it's designed to bounce off any stones. My question is - how easy is it to paint over it with the car's actual colour? Or is there a different method for that?

Then I'd buy the most capable dually 2WD I could get with a stake bed (can be added later and stock bed sold easily) then hang a liftgate off that. Stake bed and heavy springs (you can also add leaves, Timbrens etc) are Very Nice to have.

The more you can haul without a trailer the easier life becomes.

Having twice the rear tire width with twice the sidewall count is glorious for towing and traction on soft sand and dirty, and if ya lose one rear you can safely limp off the highway to replace it.

I don't get how to test my turbo for boost leaks. I'm pretty sure I have one because my car shakes a bit when boost comes on, but I made a little tester like this and supplied air and couldn't find any bubbles.
I was using a bike pump though because I don't have my air compressor set up currently

2004 Crown Vic, gas engine (not CNG) 199k miles, Police interceptor (P71 VIN)

Been having this pulsating vibration at idle. I can feel vibrations through my feet for a few seconds, then it goes away for a few seconds and comes back.

Did an engine flush before my oil change today and saw improvement but it's still present. Idle RPM is 850rpm (Within range for police-tuning AFAIK)

Any input on this would ne appreciated even if it's just to explain that it's normal and why.
