How nightmarish is replacing vinyl tops?
So I recently snagged up a moneypit landyacht (84 Olds Regency), and the vinyl top, as all classic cars that have been sitting in the elements for 40+ years, is pretty well trashed. Sides are okay, but the top is roached. Thankfully the roof itself isn't trashed, though I can feel some small rust holes starting on a few corners on the pillars. How horrible is the job? I'm not against tearing it off and just color matching with the rest of the car, but I'm not sold on the resulting look.

Are you friends with a custom tailoring/upholstery shop owner? If so then it'll cost you a couple thousand bucks and a week to a month's wait time. If not then it's basically impossible

I ended up paying an old guy $600 to rip the vinyl off and paint it on my yacht

It's the closest I could get without it being rotted in half in my area unfortunately :(

well shit
>>28565784
I guess it ain't that bad, I could just paint it white to keep the two tone look at least. I guess I've just seen too many retards do it instead of people with actual skill.

Is there metal underneath that?
Then just lay some aircraft paint stripper on it and scrape it off. Repaint with a urethane primer, like mastercoat or rust bullet or sem rust trap, your choice of colour coat, then a urethane clearcoat, like mc ag111 or rb duragrade clear.

Any good stripper will take it off, with some scraping, but you better be careful it doesn't hit the rest of the paint. I'd say tape off the lower panels if you're trying to save the paint. BTW you really wanna do this. Those carb'd 307's were absolute dogs. I guess a solution would be drop in a cheap SBC or find a junkyard Olds limo with a 403.

Yeah the 307 is definitely a dog, and the engine itself definitely feels tired just on its own outside of that. It's perfect for cruising though, which is what I got the car for, so I don't mind. I'm more amazed the quadrajet still functions properly. I've only ever heard nightmare stories about them

My 05 accord almost was recognized as a classic before the rust ate her alive

Hey if it's a good cruiser, go with it. The stories you've heard are from kids who've never touched a carb. Quads are nearly bulletproof. They not as completely unstoppable as the dual-jets, but they are very, VERY good. Their only weak points are the lower jet wells, sealed with a lead plug, can sometimes (rarely) leak and need an epoxy fix. A more common issue, on something that hasn't run in years, is the secondary metering rods can separate from their piston - again, the fix is 5 cents worth of epoxy.

Budget solution: Rip the torn vinyl off, spray the roof with black wrinkle paint and call it a day.

i'd wrap this shitbox around a pole for lulz

trying to save this heap of shit wouldn't even cross my mind. perhaps because i'm too busy having sex, or simply that i value my spare time too much to waste it on garbage. have some self-respect and move on.
