Theoretically, how hard is it to replace clutchplates?
On a little japanese car? 5 box . The clutch is sticking a bit and the plates will be worn. Is it doable without a garage lift?

Can you remove a 5 speed gearbox from a car from the underside?

FWD cars normally require the removal of the gearbox side transmission to make room to unbolt it.
Sometimes it is easier to lift the car off the engine and transmission.
Half a day by yourself.

I've done tranny work parked on the street with just jack stands. You probably won't have room to remove the bell housing while inside the engine bay, and I assume you don't have a crane either, so you'll have to take the subframe off and take the tranny out from below. Two jacks is almost essential, and you need to suspend the engine and tranny when you remove the tranny mounts, I used a scrap metal cross bar across the engine bay plus ratchet straps.

That being said though, you said the clutch is sticking, which is usually more of a hydraulic issue. You may not need to replace the clutch disc yet, check the hydraulic lines and master/slave cylinders first.

Yeah, having the engine mounted by one side and the gearbox pretty much loose is a bit of a juggling act.
I've done it before but these days I'll just write off the cash.
Op whatever you do don't forget the release bearing because you'll have to go through it all again to change it.

Seems like kind of an "if you need to ask you can't reasonably do it" thing tee bee aitch. Not that it should stop you from trying, but it should probably stop you if you need to go to work.

As the earlier poster said check your master and slave cylinder
If you have dark sediment in your clutch fluid reservoir then she is toast
I changed my clutch with 4 jackstands, a jack, and 1 ton engine hoist.
It was a bitch but doable. Luckily in my car the trans case was able yo rest on the side of the subframe. If you have an engine hoist you may be able yo just pluck it out from up top.

can also use an engine support bar as well if you don't have the space for a crane. sits on the fenders.

Yeah something like that was what my actual shop manual called for if i remember right. Just used the hoist because i already bought it
