>we are going to destroy our whole brand and sabotage our existing cars by investing zero money in actually redesigning their engines, platforms, suspensions, interiors, technology etc.

Instead, all we will sell you is electric cars that nobody wants.

Are manufacturers suicidal? Who is putting them up to this? It's bizarre to me how most mainstream cars are barely hybridized (the Camry has fucking nickel hydride batteries) but manufacturers will release a sea of ultra-heavy, ultra-expensive electric cars with the same practical 200-250 mi range. Am I taking crazy pills?

It's much more profitable to sell a few expensive cars with decent profit margins than large numbers of cheap cars. The latter was a viable strategy as well ofc, but it isn't anymore. This happened for a few reasons, safety and emissions regs for example. And everyone this side of a millionaire is going to be priced out of a lot of things very soon, so demand for cheap new cars is shrinking anyways

They aren't gonna be cheap anyways but you are gonna sell WAY more gas powered vehicles than anything "electric" and I get that this brand is one of those Middle Eastern Chinese owned fake brands that has money to burn - but legacy manufacturers are doing it to.
>safety and emissions regs for example
don't at all mandate that you cannot have a gas powered vehicle if ANYTHING this should motivate more mild and self charging hybrids - especially among normie cars and suvs and trucks.

Deep improvements are something of a double edged sword because most people don't care and just want screenslop. It also doesn't work well for brands that don't have the money to spend on a total refresh of everything.
One car that comes to mind is the Jaguar XE. Under the skin, it was far and away the most advanced chassis of any car in its class. Double wishbones at the front and a very well-sorted multilink setup at the back meant it had exceptional ride quality while also being very playful and sharp. It mogged the 3 Series for handling and was more comfortable than the Guilia.
Problem was that they ran out of money/time to do anything else. The sueprcharged V6 was okay but the ingenium 4 cylinders were fucking terrible and they never fitted a 6 cylinder diesel, which up until around 2019/2020 was cruicial to compete in the exec saloon market against the 330d/335d and A4 3.0 TDI that dominated that segment.

>most people don't care
absolutely wildly untrue if you look as sales figures substantial updates and new platforms almost always result in significant sales increases - look at the new Chebby Equinox - the interior is finally close to competitive and I bet the sales are up for it - though the engine is still kinda trash and below par.
>One car that comes to mind is the Jaguar XE
probably too small and fiddly electronics that go boom
Jaguar is an idea that could work if they cared.

Depending on who you ask, cars peaked 20 to 70 years ago. The only thing left to do as a car company is to keep yourself alive while the currency endlessly devalues itself which usually involves either sucking up to investors via jewish schemes or sucking up to/bribing the government for bailouts.

>don't at all mandate that you cannot have a gas powered vehicle
They do, via fleet emission restrictions. Companies HAVE to sell EVs to offset a smaller amount of gas or hybrid cars. Or a much smaller amount of performance cars
I know the US effectively got rid of the rule but that was just a few weeks ago. Probably won't have an impact on the market for another year or two

Increasing emissions requirements in line with the UN's "Sustainable Development" goals. They were hoping to push most manufacturers to go 100% EV by 2030, which many were and have been doing, but one by one they've all been backing down on those plans because, in the end, people vote with their wallet and just aren't buying them.
Literally the only exceptions are cucked out European countries like Norway, which shills will regurgitate "They're almost at 100% EV adoption!" without mentioning that Norway literally outlawed sales of new ICE cars. Whether it's Porsche, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Dodge, Mercedes or a load of other brands, there's examples of all of them either cancelling their next-gen EVs or announcing ICE replacements for the EVs that they released (to lukewarm reception).

They need to embrace the EV roadster. That alone would solve much of the battery question, since a smaller/lighter car would need fewer battery cells, meaning:
>lower charge time
>cheaper charging
>cheaper battery
>reduced explosive danger
>less road wear
>no concerns over parking garage collapse
The current EV SUV paradigm is pure cancer and is the worst possible use of both EV and general automotive technology

Current thinks in the same way Boomer thought back in their day
It's some other gen's problem, we'll fix it later
Hydrogen is the better alternative but retards hate it because they think that unlike their homes and cars the electricity to produce hydrogen is only made using coal burning power plants

And it will also not help, an EV is going to be a HEAVY BOY no matter how small.
Roadsters are supposed to be fun to drive and be able to handle like a dream. EV's are never going to turn because heavy.
Marketers thought that all the "advanced car owner" wants is 0-60 because everything everyone ever talks about is horsepower, torque and going fast. But apparently going straight is not fun after a couple times and what people really value is a combination of fast and handling.
So average joe will not buy an EV roadster because you can't stuff your dog in it and it has not enough cupholders, and anyone who wants a fun car will also not buy a fast EV because it doesn't turn and just goes fast in a straight line.

I mean, in the sense that EVs make sense as toys for the rich yeah - but like you cannot make a car as low weight with an EV powertrain as a gas one.

>>28569897
they make sense as in town cars for rich people but like as standard transportation it makes zero sense to ask people to buy something that is on average 10k more expensive, 1000 lbs heavier, and takes 10-30x as long to refuel/charge

Nope. I've been brainstorming a heavy electric cruiser bike once (think big fat 300 kg Harley but instead of being mostly decorative it's mostly batteries), and my calculations came to a conclusion that range increases almost linearly with battery capacity and barely changes with the weight of the rest of the vehicle. No matter if the chassis weighs 150 kg or 1250 kg, 250 kg of batteries will drive you about the same 150 km either way (more now with better batteries than a decade ago but still).
