Aka “the Widowmaker” because at the time a lot of doctor-lawyer-bankers would buy them to try and flex on Ferrari’s and shit, crash and die.

could get 90% of the way there and save a lot of money by doing a 996 turbo with rwd conversion and a few mods, if that matters

Not a homologation special anymore, unlike the GT3 or the 993 GT2.
480hp is tuned 335i tier.

Nah. It’s a fundamental engine thing for the 996, regardless of iteration. It was their first liquid cooled 911. They have a lot of problems they were working out. Basically the 997 is one of the best built ever due to lessons learned from 996 and being flush with cash from Cayenne sales.

>>28569638
All the usual 996 engine problems apply to a slightly lesser degree to the base 997s. Turbos and GTs used a completely different engine that was basically a development from the 962.

Yeah, but back in 2002, most supercars had about that kind of power. Car companies were only just coming out of the hangover of the 90s from the 80s emissions stuff. Gallardo made 493. The Ferrari 360 only made like 400hp, even the 430 made like 490. The GT2 was in the mix of its era. You also have to remember cars were several hundred pounds lighter back then too. E38 7 series was like 4,100lbs. Today they’re 4800-5100 lbs depending on trim. Likewise, the GT2 was 3200lbs, modern porsche turbos are like 3700.

It's really the look of the headlights+the cheapness of the interior. The 90s were a low point for Porsche.

You mean 964 engine aka Mezger?
Only thing against them is fuel economy
Anonymous No.28569670
>>28569662
Exactly. 996/997 Turbos and GTs still used developments of the Mezger engine, which is why they're free of the dreaded M96/M97 problems.

Anonymous No.28569797 >>28569850 >>28569859

It's only because of the car's looks and being the first liquid cooled 911. The 997 is suddenly seen as a radical improvement but for the most part the only difference is the return to form aesthetically.
Anonymous No.28569850

True. Just can't get over the Toyota-like plastic interior of the 996.

>It's really the look of the headlights

you retards dont even understand the things you parrot from hearing online

the headlight thing applies to the flat panel early 996s, they had fucked up proportions

no one has ever thought the wide body 996s were ugly until brainless zoomers started parroting things they dont understand

any gt3 after the 997 have been homologation jokes that were only competitive for their cup series. The actual GTE race car now is the RSR which is full on mid engine.
