I just mounted mine to the side to avoid drilling holes in my bumper, blocking my heat exchangers, and the buck tooth look. Some gay retard pig pulled me over for not having it mounted last year, so I did have to do something to turn it from a real ticket with a fine to just a warning. The special snowflake tow hook bracket was cheaper.

You're right, but the non-aesthetic improvements only matter if the plate covers your grill, radiator, intakes, etc.
Some cars (read: SUVs and truggs) have fuckhuge bumpers so it doesn't matter from a performance perspectice

If they didn't have to make room for the insert then they'd be able to put the grille, and by extension the intakes/cooling systems, in a more optimal location. Or at the very least make it a bit bigger to increase airflow
